Mari Hannah is a multi-award-winning author, whose authentic voice is no happy accident. A former probation officer, she lives in rural Northumberland with her partner, an ex-murder detective. Mari turned to script-writing when her career was cut short following an assault on duty. Her debut, The Murder Wall, (adapted from a script she developed with the BBC) won her the Polari First Book Prize. Its follow-up, Settled Blood, picked up a Northern Writers' Award. Mari's body of work won her the CWA Dagger in the Library 2017, an incredible honour to receive so early in her career. In 2019, she was voted DIVA Wordsmith of the Year. In 2020, she won Capital Crime International Crime Writing Festival's Crime Book of the Year for Without a Trace. Her Kate Daniels series is in development with Stephen Fry's production company, Sprout Pictures.

Her Last Request is one of the best thrillers that I have read recently. I Loved the way the story was written with a clue from the victim found at the first murder scene which sets the detectives on their way to finding out who committed this horrific murder and why, but they don’t have much to go on.

From the first chapter, I was already hooked and eager to find out more.

The characters are described so well that they came across as very real. I especially appreciated the characters Kate and Hank as they are our protagonists who are solving the case, but I also enjoyed getting to know Lisa Carmichael and David Stone.

There are some dark and gruesome parts to this tale that adds to the storyline and the mystery throughout. There was also good use of descriptive language and lots of detail adding weight to the plot.

Her Last Request was gripping and a definite page-turner that kept my attention from beginning to end and I raced through it.

Well done author Mari Hannah this book is definitely a winner for me and I will recommend it to family and friends.

Really struggling to understand the 4 and 5-star reviews for this one. There is barely a credible story here as your imagination is stretched to the limit with what is going on.

A murdered woman, Hannah, gives clues from the grave to a police officer to identify who murdered her (nothing paranormal, to be clear). Of course, clues, but not the name of the offender, despite him being the father of Hannah's child (an early reveal). Hannah also confides of her difficulties to a policeman friend, also without naming the offender. And so it goes on with everybody speaking in terms of 'he'. As the pool of potential suspects remains tiny, something has to give. So, all of a sudden, near the end of book, the murderer appears out of the blue. We have an overload of luck and coincidence throughout, as well as a book which is overlong and in need of better editing. Sorry, but I just didn't see what many others did here.

I have read a few of "Mari Hannah's" earlier books in this series but not for a while. Not read it yet but had a good look at it and it appears really polished. The author seems to have come a long way from her earlier work.

Her Last Request is the latest in the DCI Kate Daniels series and if you thought that she had probably seen it all, then you're mistaken as this is a series that is just gaining momentum with every single book written.

From the outset it was clear that Kate Daniels and her team would have to have their wits about them if they were even going to be able to identify who their victim was let alone catch her sadistic killer as there was no I.D or any personal belongings to be found in the caravan to enable them to put a name to her. The young woman, known only as Helen when she made the booking for 6 months in cash, had done everything she possibly could have done to escape but sadly it seems that whoever she was trying to escape from had found her and she suffered the most gruesome of deaths.

But it's the discovery of a note that asks 'Find Aaron' that will be the driving force behind the investigation that will spur Kate on in her quest to find the answers. And just like Kate did when she read the note, I too had so many questions running through my head, who is the real Helen and what was her story but the most prominent one had to be who is the Aaron mentioned in the note and where is he? These and so many more are slowly answered as the team read between the lines and pick up the clues that have cryptically been left for them.

Once again Kate dives straight into the investigation, putting her whole self into being a voice for Helen and in the search for Aaron. But it seems she's not alone and there's someone else who is just as determined to find him and nothing and no-one is going to get in his way. We get to see both sides of the investigation, Kate, Hank, her second-in-command, and the rest of the team in their search for the killer, but also from the perpetrator who is enjoying taunting them at every turn and who seems to be on a mission to stop them at any cost whether it being at risk of their jobs when evidence seems to be putting them in compromising situations or even putting them in physical harm.

Although the crime and investigation are very much at the heart of the story, it's also a story about relationships and I was pleasantly surprised when an old friend from the Stone and Oliver series appeared. The working relationship between Kate and Hank as well as the rest of the team, as well as the her personal relationship with her partner Jo who is called in to assist the team on a professional basis. Jo is also able to use her own personal history to get into the mindset of the victim which helps provide vital evidence to help with their enquiries. Each of the relationships are tested and put through the wringer at various moments but ultimately they are there for one another in their moments of need.

Whether you've read any of the previous books in the series, or are a complete newbie, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Her Last Request. It's an addictive read that will have you reading late into the night if like me you don't start reading until later in the evening as once it's got you in its hold you won't want to stop reading until the bitter end!
