Sylvia Plath (1932-63) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and studied at Smith College. In 1955 she went to Cambridge University on a Fulbright scholarship, where she met and later married Ted Hughes. She published one collection of poems in her lifetime, The Colossus (1960), and a novel, The Bell Jar (1963). Plath's volume Ariel (1965) secured her reputation and her Collected Poems (1981), which contains poetry written from 1956 until her death, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

I know that people would like to introduce others to Plath's work through the Ariel collection, The Colossus, and The Bell Jar. However, I understand the enthusiasm to get readers engaged by giving them the "hard stuff" first. Still, since this is the slimmest Sylvia Plath collection of 19 poems, I'd say this book is an excellent introduction to Plath's bibliography and her poetic world, especially for someone who is not an avid reader in general.

My favorite poems here are "Winter Trees," "The Courage of Shutting-Up," "The Swarm," and, OF COURSE, the legendary poetic play "The Three Women." I adore the other poems so much, but these are the poems that I found myself going back to the most.

There's an airiness to this collection that is very captivating. I think I love Plath so much because she is a fierce proponent of the "show don't tell" rule in poetry. Her poems are both elusive and lucid simultaneously, and that's a great compliment because you cannot approach her work with a black and white mind. Life is rarely that, which is why she knows how to imitate life through her art so effectively.

Slim volume of Sylvia Plath's poems, ones not seen much. She saw the dark side of life. In "Thalidoimide," she describes birth defects. Sylvia lived in England where this drug was allowed (also in Canada):

"...knuckles on shoulder blades the /faces that/shove into being..."

Many of these poems wound up in "Ariel." Amazon is selling it at a low kindle price. The manuscript shows how she wanted her poems in a certain order. Her husband, poet Ted Hughes, did not follow her wishes, but now the original manuscript has surfaced. "Ariel" won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry posthumously.

I really enjoyed this collection of poetry by Sylvia Plath. I have read most of her work, and it gets better and better each time I read a new collection of hers, though it usually has ones I've read before. There's really not much else I can say. If you're a fan of Sylvia's, then read this collection of her work. You'll be glad you did. Cheers, and Happy New Year.
