Als klassiek geschoold zangeres ken ik de prachtige, spetterende optredens van Nora Fischer. Toen ik jaren geleden een concert van haar bezocht was ik onder de indruk van de weg die zij als zangeres gevolgd had – conservatorium niet afgemaakt en afgereisd naar Kopenhagen om daar aan het Complete Vocal Institute te studeren. Haar programma was zó belichaamd, doorleefd en ze gebruikte allerlei niet-klassieke tools. Ik vond het geweldig.

In haar boek Hoogspanning beschrijft Nora Fischer echter rauw de andere kant van dit plaatje. Ze groeide op in een muzikaal gezin en werd verliefd op het instrument zangstem. Ze had er ook buitengewoon talent voor en ging klassieke zang studeren. Ze was echter niet op zoek naar een “standaard klassiek geluid” zoals dat werd onderwezen, want ze was best tevreden met haar stem en wilde graag andere dingen leren. Haar carrière nam een grote vlucht en ze trad op met grote orkesten en dirigenten en op de mooiste podia die je je maar voor kunt stellen. Het lijkt een droomleven voor veel mensen.

Maar in Nora’s leven liep het anders. Heel eerlijk vertelt ze daarover in haar boek. Ze vertelt over de angst en de spanning om “het niet te halen” en ze vertelt het heel persoonlijke verhaal van de band met haar zus. Ze vertelt hoe ze lange tijd niet anders kon dan doorzingen – tot haar stem het letterlijk begaf. Tot ze terecht kwam in “hoe harder ik oefende, hoe slechter het ging”. En toen was het tijd voor iets anders. En dat vond ze – want uiteindelijk vond ze de weg naar de verbinding met haar eigen bron van creativiteit en inspiratie weer terug. En kon ze haar verhaal vertellen – opnieuw op het podium.

Ik heb Nora’s boek in één ruk uitgelezen. Ze heeft een vlotte schrijfstijl en wat ze schrijft is zo persoonlijk, dat het voelt of je met haar aan tafel zit. Een verhaal over de Imposter, die soms zó groot kan worden, dat hij alles overheerst. Maar ook een verhaal van hoop – dat je de weg terug kan vinden, ook al kost dat wel wat. Een prachtig, schrijnend en tegelijkertijd zó krachtig verhaal over het vinden van je authentieke stem. Ook een bijzondere inkijk in backstage kant van de concertwereld.

Cameron Crowe was born July 13, 1957 in Palm Springs, California. He became Rolling Stone’s youngest-ever contributor as a fifteen-year-old high school graduate, going on to conduct all-time best interviews with the likes of Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Elton John, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the Who. Crowe is also an acclaimed filmmaker who has written and directed films including Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Say Anything…, Singles, Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky, and Almost Famous (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay). He wrote the definitive book on the work of writer-director Billy Wilder, Conversations with Wilder. Crowe is currently at work on a film based on the life and music of Joni Mitchell. He has three children and lives in Southern California.
