Robbie Shaw was an air traffic controller in both the RAF and National Air Traffic Services, also working as a tour leader for Ian Allan Aviation Tours for some years. He has written 28 aviation books across civil and military topics, and created the concept for Airliner World magazine (Key Publishing), working as a consultant for its first few years. He has written many articles for aviation magazines.

Flaptekst boek van J.M. Grisnich deel 1 in de Fokker G-1 collectie

Het eerste deel gaat in op de operaties van de 4de Ja.V.A. op het vliegveld Bergen (NH) vanaf de oprichting in september 1939. Om de neutraliteit te bewaken werden patrouilles gevlogen en ook de -veelal Duitse- indringers onderschept. Toen de Duitse overval een feit was, werd een deel van de 4de Ja.V.A. naar Schiphol overgeplaatst. In de oorlogsdagen werden vanaf Schiphol en Bergen missies gevlogen. Hoewel gehinderd door Duitse aanvallen en geleden verliezen, werden door de mannen van de 4de Ja.V.A. met hun G-1’s tot de capitulatie verschillende missies gevlogen. Na de capitulatie werd het onderdeel ontbonden en de nog bruikbare vliegtuigen als oorlogsbuit door de bezetter naar Duitsland overgebracht.

De NF-5 is een vliegtuig dat binnen de Koninklijk Luchtmacht zeer geliefd was. Het toestel viel op door zijn eenvoud en geringe afmetingen. Niettemin brak het alle veiligheidsrecords en overtrof het zelfs haar geplande levensduur. Sterker nog, toen na de uitfasering rond 1990 een groot deel van de toestellen aan Turkije werd overgedragen richtte zij met deze toestellen het demoteam “Turkish Stars” op. Nu, een dertig jaar later vliegt dat demoteam nog steeds met deze NF-5’s, hoewel dat nu echt op zijn einde loopt.

In dit boek beschrijft en illustreert de auteur de historie en de ontwikkeling van dit vliegtuig. Ook schenkt hij uitgebreid aandacht aan de techniek, waar nodig door detailtekeningen ondersteund. Enige honderden foto’s illustreren de tekst, waarvan vele nooit eerder werden gepubliceerd. Zo wordt nagenoeg elke NF-5 van de Koninklijke luchtmacht in kleur geïllustreerd, ook die door ongelukken verloren zijn gegaan. Spectaculaire verslagen van enkele vliegers completeren het boek. Met de Lockheed F-104G Star¿ghter vormden beide toestellen een kwart eeuw de ruggengraat van de Koninklijke luchtmacht.

Cor van Gent is luchtvaartfotograaf en auteur. Hij schreef meer dan tien boeken en publiceerde in verschillende luchtvaartbladen.

Aviation in Greenland began with the establishment of military airbases by the US during World War II, primarily Kangerlussuaq (then Sondrestrom and Blui West Eight) and Narsarsuaq (then Blui West One).

These bases later facilitated civilian flights, including transatlantic routes, before the development of a domestic network served by Air Greenland (formerly Grønlandsfly).

When the company first started under the name Greenland Airlines, it was with the primary task of servicing the United States Air Force when their four DYE stations were to be supplied.

The airline started with seaplanes and helicopters, expanding to fixed-wing aircraft and a network of short runway airports, eventually taking over international routes from SAS.

Air Greenland has trained own staff of Greenlanders, who are today a mixture of Inuit and Danish or other Europeans and is a great success story of the development of a state owned company run commercially – albeit with subsidy, anchored in and serving the local community incl companies working in Greenland and participating in the development of tourism.
