Funkmuziek boeken

Muziek is voor velen van ons zeer belangrijk in het leven. Funkmuziek is een van de muziekgenres die aan het begin van de jaren zestig vorige eeuw is opgekomen en tot op de dag van vandaag populair is gebleven, zij het wel in een niche. Vaak wordt James Brown als de uitvinder van het genre gezien dat zich kenmerkt door een zeer ritmisch staccato geheel met dominante percussie, baslijnen, prominente gitaren en scherpe blaasinstrumenten. Het hoogtepunt van de funk ligt in de jaren zeventig met bands als Parliament-Funkadelic, Ohio Players, Bootsy’s Rubberband en The Isley Brothers. Bovendien waren er een aantal solo-artiesten als Betty Davis, de jonge Chaka Khan (met Rufus) belangrijk. In de moderne hiphop en rap worden vaak samples gebruikt uit de funkmuziek wat zeker heeft geleid tot een herwaardering en gestegen populariteit van de funkmuziek.

The Isley Brothers began recording as a vocal trio consisting of the brothers O’Kelly Isley Jr., Rudolph Isley, and Ronald Isley in the 1950s. They have covered a wide range of genres, including gospel, doo-wop, rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, the Motown sound, funk, and disco, and their music has been sampled by numerous hip-hop artists. The Isley Brothers achieved their first hit, “Shout,” in 1959 and have reached the Billboard Hot 100 Songs chart with new music in six different decades, from the 1950s to the 2000s.

The brothers experienced their golden age from 1973 to 1983 with the addition of three younger brothers. With three instrumentalists, including composer and arranger Chris Jasper, The Isleys became a self-contained band and released a string of platinum albums. Over the years, The Isley Brothers have adapted the group, adding and losing members over time, but have always included a brother. Today, Ernie and Ronald Isley are still performing, keeping The Isley Brothers a household name and remaining a serious force in pop culture. The remarkable longevity of The Isley Brothers has solidified their status as one of America’s most influential musical groups.

Trenton Bailey is a historian from Memphis, Tennessee, who currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. An honors graduate of Morehouse College, he earned his PhD in humanities with a concentration in African American studies from Clark Atlanta University. Bailey has taught courses in African history, African American history, world history, and funk music, specifically. He was coordinator for the Morehouse Oral History Project and has done extensive research on the history of Morehouse College. Bailey is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and various organizations related to Black American life and culture. He is author of Do You Remember? Celebrating Fifty Years of Earth, Wind & Fire, published by University Press of Mississippi.

Mothership Connected tells the story of Mallia Franklin, Lynn Mabry, Dawn Silva, Debbie Wright, and Shirley Hayden, all of whom were instrumental in making Parliament-Funkadelic, as well as the spin-off groups Parlet and the Brides of Funkenstein, into the legends they are today. Assembled by Seth Neblett, son of the “Queen of Funk” Mallia Franklin, and filled with the voices of funk icons like George Clinton, Sly Stone, Bootsy Collins, and the women themselves, this oral history makes clear why these “architects” at the “core” of P-Funk were both essential—and erased. From Franklin introducing Bootsy Collins to Clinton, to the Brides’ top-10 hit “Disco to Go,” to the drugs that helped destroy the group, this book reveals the hidden lives and uncomfortable truths of life in P-Funk. More than sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Mothership Connected is about Black women navigating a tumultuous era and industry to become musical pioneers. Now, after decades in the shadows, these genre-defining women are finally telling their story.

 

Seth Neblett is a photographer, director, and writer. He is the son of Mallia “Queen of Funk” Franklin of Parliament-Funkadelic and Nathaniel “Nate” Neblett of New Birth. Neblett has directed videos for iconic musicians, including Chaka Khan’s “I Love Myself.”

De kleurrijke oproerkraaiers die de Flights organiseerden, maakten deel uit van een internationale popscene. Zij schetsen een levendig beeld van hun toenmalige subcultuur en leggen uit hoe hun Flights zich ontwikkelden tot het huidige Lowlands.

Patrick Bakkenes publiceerde eerder Kantelaars van de Sixties, over de maatschappelijke en culturele erfenis van de jaren zestig. Daarnaast is hij (mede)auteur van een vuistdik boek over zijn stamboom en familiegeschiedenis, over de periode 1100-2005.

Finding Mr. Perfect explores the romantic relationships between Korean men and women who were inspired by romantic Korean televisual depictions of Korean masculinity to travel to Korea as tourists.

Author Min Joo Lee argues that disparate racialized erotic desires of Korean pop culture fans, foreign tourists to Korea, Korean men, and the Korean nation converge to configure the interracial and transnational relationships between these tourists and Korean men. Lee observes how racial prejudices are developed and manifested through interracial and transnational intimate desires and encounters.

This book is the first to examine the interracial relationships between Hallyu tourists and Korean men. Furthermore, it is the first to analyze Korea as a popular romance tourist destination for heterosexual women. Finding Mr. Perfect illuminates South Korean popular culture’s transnational fandom and tourism as a global phenomenon where fantasies and realities converge to have a tangible impact on individual lives.
