Whilst London’s Heathrow Airport has been the hub for the main flag-carrying airlines flying to major cities around the world, Gatwick has officially been London’s second airport since it was opened in 1958. If you wanted a package holiday throughout the ‘60s and 70s, you would often fly on charter airlines that operated a variety of aircraft types into Gatwick to destinations worldwide.

For the enthusiast, this made spectator visits more interesting and Gatwick catered well for the plane spotter with viewing piers that were very close overlooking the parked airliners. The variety of aircraft types to be seen ranged from light aircraft, executive types, propeller and jet airliners and even military transports. This full-colour book charts the airport’s history through its aircraft from the early days up to date.

Adrian M. Balch is an aviation photographer, journalist and author, contributing articles and photographs since the mid-1960s. He served in RAF Air Traffic Control during 1971-93 and travelled extensively, never without his cameras, gathering material for his archive library. He has flown with the Red Arrows and undertaken many other photographic sorties to accompany articles published in leading aviation periodicals worldwide.

John Tye joined British Airways in 1976 on the lowest clerical grade; 46 years later he retired as a former Concorde pilot and Senior Training captain, one of only 134 pilots who flew Concorde for BA. He also flew many other aircraft across his career, including Airbus, and has been very involved with children’s charity, Dreamflight, for over 20 years.

Readers will enjoy several hundred vintage photographs featuring aircraft and airlines from all over the world. There is ample coverage for all three major commercial variants of the aircraft: the Constellation, the Super Constellation, and the Starliner. Wartime service by military versions is also described.

She was affectionally named “Mona Lisa of the Skies” by her fans, and the Constellation’s graceful lines were the epitome of elegance and beauty in the “golden age” of air transport. One chapter is dedicated to the special features and extra comforts provided by luxury carriers. Wolfgang Borgmann’s enthusiasm for aviation was passed on to him by his parents, who were active in the aviation field. In his early years, he began building up an aviation historical collection that provides numerous rare photos and documents, as well as exciting background information, for his books. Since April 2000, Borgmann has been active as an author and freelance aviation journalist. Since February 2022, he works as editor for the leading German civil aviaiton magazine Aero International. He lives in Oerlinghausen, Germany.

The de Havilland DH.106 Comet was the first jet airliner. Prototypes first flew in 1949, deliveries of production aircraft began in 1951, and the type entered commercial service in 1952.

It was expected to deliver great prestige and prosperity to the postwar British aerospace industry, but the Comet’s reputation was badly tarnished by several fatal crashes. About a quarter of the aircraft built were destroyed or written off in accidents.

This book by freelance aviation journalist Wolfgang Borgmann provides an account of the type’s development and production in the 1940s and then proceeds to describe the technical details and operational histories of all variants including models 1, 2, 3, and 4. The work features about 250 images, the majority of which are in color.

Even dedicated fans of the Comet will find new information and unseen images. Aircraft in various nostalgic liveries are featured, including those from BOAC, Air France, PanAm, Nigeria Airways, and Japan Airlines. Military variants operated by the RAF and RCAF are also included.

Wolfgang Borgmann’s enthusiasm for aviation was passed on to him by his parents, who were active in the aviation field.
