Flaptekst boek over de allerlaatste stoomlocomotieven in dienst

Stunning original photographs illustrate this document of locomotives and railing stock around the world after their working life has come to an end.

As a conclusion to his popular series of industrial railways in the regions around the UK, as well two volumes examining steam locomotives at work in industry around the world, here Gordon Edgar looks at the vanishing steam era worldwide. In the main, this book covers the last quarter of a century, both on main and secondary railway lines and in industry, in countries such as China, Myanmar, Eritrea, and Poland.

With stunning photography and commentary, this book takes you on a tour in search of the last vestiges of everyday working steam locomotives of all gauges, as well as featuring locomotives cast aside and forgotten about. Those few remaining steam operations covered could have an uncertain future, facing today’s commercial and political challenges.

Gordon Edgar has been photographing railways since 1968 and has specialised in the end of main line and industrial steam in the UK. Having served for two decades in the Army Intelligence Corps, since retirement he has devoted his time to his archive of railway photographs. Gordon has contributed to two books on steam railways in China and his photographs have also appeared in several periodicals. An accomplished photographer, Gordon Edgar has written several railway books for Amberley Publishing.

Is it possible to overestimate the impact of the railway in history? Jeremy Black analyses that impact from the beginning to today. And of course it’s not all a triumph. The network of the Congo today operates on three gauges run by separate companies; and a lot of it doesn’t work.

There were 20,000 miles of railways in 1865 and about a million by 2020. Scale has always been a key theme in railway history. In the First World War, the London and North West Railway transported 325,000 miles of barbed wire and over twelve million pairs of army boots. At the end of the twentieth century, Indian Railways sold 4.5 billion tickets annually. With his renowned ability to take the long view of any subject and bring it into sharp focus for the reader, Jeremy Black examines how rail transformed the world. While always shaped by commercial interests, the role of the railway was (and is) strategic in the broadest sense: like Roman roads and Chinese canals, it helped develop the economic links that sustained and strengthened the major powers. For example, the railway was fundamental in integrating the frontiers of settlement with the world economy, in the spread of cultivation and ranching, and in the exploitation of mining opportunities. Rail expanded the ‘logistical space’ of most states.

To give one modern example of the political importance of rail, Ukraine’s railway is on the 1.52 metre gauge, rather than the 1.435 metre one used in Poland and most of Europe. In 2022, Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine’s Prime Minister, declared that the railways there would be rebuilt to the European gauge. This enhanced capability would counter the Russian ability to blockade Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, notably Odessa. The plan was not endorsed by the Kremlin

Jeremy Black is Professor of History at Exeter University. He is a prolific lecturer and writer, the author of over 100 books. Many concern aspects of eighteenth-century British, European and American political, diplomatic and military history but he has also published on the history of the press, cartography, warfare, culture and on the nature and uses of history itself. He sits on the editorial boards of History Today, International History Review, Journal of Military History, and Media History.

In 1825 the Stockton & Darlington Railway began operations as the world’s first public railway to be operated by steam. The first train, that opened the railway on the 27th September, was drawn by the locomotive that became known as Locomotion No.1, and from this origin all public railways the world over developed to become the driving force behind economic progress.

The brief history that accompanied the locomotive’s preservation in 1857 was both inadequate and factually incorrect. In anticipation of the railway’s bicentenary a major archival and archaeological study was initiated by the National Railway Museum to establish the true history of the locomotive both in service and during retirement. This is the story revealed by the study.

Michael R. Bailey is a railway historian who has undertaken projects for museums in England, Canada and Denmark. He writes and lectures (and occasionally acts as a TV consultant) and was a consultant to UNESCO regarding the Rhaetian Railway’s application for World Heritage status. He is a member of the Newcomen Society, and was its president 1995 – 1997. He was a Trustee of the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester and remains president of the museum Friends, and is a vice-president of the Stephenson Locomotive Society.

Peter H. Davidson’s career has been in mechanical engineering, and in design and construction of miniature locomotives. A consultant to the National Railway Museum and other museums in Britain, he has experience with four archaeological and archival studies (with Michael Bailey) of early steam locomotives. He was co-author of Canterbury & Whitstable Railway – Invicta Locomotive (2020), and has written several papers on early railway technology.

Eelco Storm woont in Denemarken.
