Wiskunde is een zogenaamde formele wetenschap en wordt ook wel een exacte wetenschap genoemd. De wiskundige bestudeert onder andere getallen, patronen en abstracte structuren bestudeert. Wiskundige beweringen waarvan de juistheid is aangetoond en bewezen heten stellingen. En deze zijn zeer belangrijk en zorgen voor aanzien onder wiskundigen. Vaak wordt zo’n stelling genoemd naar de vermeende bedenker ervan. De stelling van Pythagoras en de stelling van Fermat zijn zonder twijfel de beroemdste stellingen die ook bij mensen zonder enige kennis van de betekenis ervan een belletje doen rinkelen.

Ian Stewart was born 24 September 1945 in Folkestone, England. He is  Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Warwick and the author of the bestseller Professor Stewart’s Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities. His recent books include Do Dice Play God?, Significant Figures: Lives and Works of Trailblazing Mathematicians, Professor Stewart’s Incredible Numbers, Seventeen Equations that Changed the World, Professor Stewart’s Casebook of Mathematical Mysteries and Calculating the Cosmos. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society.

We see Chinese Mathematical Art from 200 BCE, the invention of algebra in Baghdad’s House of Wisdom, and sangaku geometrical theorems at Japanese shrines. Lawrence goes beyond the familiar names of Newton and Pascal, exploring the prominent role women have played in the history of maths, including Emmy Noether and Maryam Mirzakhani.

Snezana Lawrence works as a senior lecturer at Middlesex University, London, and was the chair of the History and Pedagogy of Mathematics International Study Group between 2020 and 2024. She is the author of The New Year’s Present from a Mathematician and editor of Mathematicians and Their Gods. She is on X as @snezanalawrence and @mathshistory.

Een wiskundig raadsel is zowel een genot als een marteling. Het geeft je de gelegenheid om te breinbruisen en te hersenkraken – voor een minuut, een uur of een week. Tegelijkertijd is de frustratie groot als je de oplossing niet vindt.

Een goed raadsel laat je niet meer los. In dit boek presenteert Alex van den Brandhof in twintig hoofdstukken problemen over kabouters die de kleur van hun muts moeten raden – zich houdend aan strikte spelregels. Meestal denk je in eerste instantie: dat kán toch niet! En dan blijkt er toch een geniale oplossing te bestaan.

Het boek is meer dan gewoon een bundel raadsels, vanwege de diepe en onverwachte connecties met wiskunde in de meest pure vorm. Getaltheorie, coderingstheorie, grafentheorie: het zijn maar een paar deelgebieden van de wiskunde die bij de oplossingen van pas komen. Er zijn zelfs raakvlakken met vragen waar wiskundigen nog geen antwoord op hebben.

De kabouterformule is een bron van verwondering. Een uitdaging voor de geest.

Alex van den Brandhof (Amsterdam, 1976) is wetenschapsjournalist met een passie voor wiskunde. Hij schrijft onder meer voor NRC. Eerder verscheen van zijn hand Priemwoestijnen. Ook was hij medeauteur van De Pythagoras Code en De zeven grootste raadsels van de wiskunde. Alex van den Brandhof woont in Haarlem en Bazel, waar hij lesgeeft op een middelbare school.
