De Scythen waren ruiterstammen die tussen de 7e eeuw v.Chr. en de 4e eeuw n. Chr. grote gebieden in de Euraziatische steppe bewoonden in het gebied wat wij nu Iran noemen. Met de Scythen worden verschillende volkeren en culturen bedoeld die leefden in de in de steppezone. De Sarmaten, Massageten en Saken worden als Scytische volkeren gezien. Na recent onderzoek worden er drie belangrijke perioden onderscheiden: de Pre-Scythisch en begin-Scythisch tijdperk (9e – midden 7e eeuw v.Chr.), de Vroeg-Scythische tijdperk (7e – 6e eeuw v.Chr.) en de Klassiek-Scythisch tijdperk (5e – 4e eeuw v.Chr.).
