John Kaag Think Again reviews and information

Whenever a review of Think Again, A New Introduction to Philosophy written by john Kaag, the American philosoher and writer, appears in the media, we’ll highlight it on this page.

  • “Kaag treats complex ideas in a patient way, leading students to understand larger questions and problems in philosophy. One of the book’s strengths is the attention it gives to teaching how to think and write philosophically. It not only explains how ideas emerged historically but how these ideas are used in everyday life. Moreover, the approach of thinking of philosophy as a way of being human anchors the practice of philosophy in the realm of action.” (Celia T. Bardwell-Jones, University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo)
  • “An excellent book. The writing is superior. Kaag masterfully weaves philosophical content, everyday experience, personal anecdotes, and current events. The substantial inclusion of primary texts allows instructors to enjoy the benefits of a textbook without sacrificing a commitment to the original text. And Kaag’s explanations and applications make the primary texts more accessible.” (Michael Ventimiglia, Sacred Heart University)

Motivated by the belief that teaching is fundamental to philosophy, the book has been carefully designed and written to be accessible to a wide range of undergraduates at a broad array of schools.

Think Again proceeds historically, guiding students from the ancients through to 1900 and the birth of contemporary philosophy. From there, it proceeds thematically, covering topics as diverse as metaphysics and epistemology, philosophy of mind, moral and political philosophy, and philosophical approaches to oppression. It features skillfully selected excerpts of primary texts from philosophy to encourage students’ direct engagement with and close reading of foundational texts.
