Sallie Martin combined fame as a performer with a far-sighted business acumen that brought Black gospel music to a national audience and laid the foundation for the industry that followed. Kay Norton’s biography follows Martin’s parallel careers from her early plans to grow the genre through her celebrity in the 1960s–1970s and eventful retirement.

“Same old Sallie Martin, same old Jesus,” she once told audiences, a reflection of both her musical style and unapologetic approach to life. Cofounder of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, Martin also co-established the pioneering Black music publisher Martin and Morris Music Studio. Her group the Sallie Martin Singers took Chicago gospel to all points of the compass and Martin mentored and employed dozens of aspiring vocalists and instrumentalists. Norton looks at Martin’s important relationships and the challenges she faced, while placing her accomplishments and legacy on the arc of gospel music history.

The first full-length biography of a true giant of jazz.

Jazz legend Cootie Williams left home to start his career as a professional musician at the age of fifteen. In 1940, after eleven years as one of the major soloists with the Duke Ellington orchestra, Williams was lured away to the band of Benny Goodman, one of the most popular bands in the country. At the time, it was a controversial move—it was still taboo for African Americans to share the bandstand with white people. Current references to the move usually reduce it to a song written by Raymond Scott, “When Cootie Left the Duke.” In reality, it was a seismic event. The Black press predicted Black bands would collapse from raids on their ranks. White musicians were afraid they would be put out of work. And the white press stirred up visions of Black musicians mixing with white women in the new landscape of integrated orchestras.

The twenty years trumpeter Williams spent as a band leader (1942-1962) have been covered in only the barest of details. His involvement in politics and the civil rights movement have not been detailed before. An astute talent scout, Williams and his band launched the careers of Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Earl “Bud” Powell, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and Pearl Bailey. He also was the first to record the music of a young Thelonious Monk, using two of Monk’s compositions (“Epistrophy” and “‘Round Midnight”) as theme songs for his band.

Steven C. Bowie respectfully tells Williams’s story, from his Alabama ancestry onward, including many new details rediscovered from the historical archives of the African American press and those gleaned from the author’s interviews with his friends and colleagues.

Steven C. Bowie curates and hosts the Duke Ellington-themed podcast Ellington Reflections. He has presented papers on Cootie Williams and Kenny Burrell for conferences held by the Duke Ellington Society of Sweden and written articles for DownBeat and Jazz Improv magazines.

Recensie en waardering van het boek over Prince

  • In zijn relatief korte leven, hij overleed, slechts 58 jaar oud, op 21 april 2016 door onopzettelijke overdosis fentanyl, was Prince Rogers Nelson extreem productie. Om dan een boek te maken met uitgebreide informatie over alle 684 liedjes die nu bekend zijn, kan niet anders dan een enorme klus zijn geweest. Toch is BenoÏt Clerc deze uitdaging aangegaan en heeft hij een uitmuntend boek geproduceerd. Net als in de andere delen in de reeks “compleet” muziekboeken die bij uitgeverij WBOOKS staat ook dit boek weer boordevol wetenswaardigheden, van alle betrokken muzikanten, verhalen achter de song, de opnames zelf tot en met curiositeiten over de song of de totstandkoming ervan. Prince compleet is een fantastisch boek om in te bladeren en lezen terwijl je luistert naar een van de allergrootste fenomenen uit de funk-, pop- en soulmuziek. Klein nadeel, er schijnt nog een archief te zijn van Prince, dat boordevol ligt met nog onbekend en niet verschenen muziek wat er in het beste geval voor kan zorgen dat het boek later nog aangevuld moet worden. Echter ondanks dat is het boek toch een echte aanrader voor elke Prince- en  muziekliefhebber! (Allesoverboekenenschrijvers.nl, ∗∗∗∗∗)

Na twee albums doorspekt met funk en disco, werd de jonge muzikant Prince Rogers Nelson in 1980 de meester van de ‘Minneapolis Sound’ dankzij zijn derde langspeelplaat, met de toepasselijke naam Dirty Mind. Prince, die kort daarna de bijnaam ‘The Kid from Minneapolis’ zou krijgen, wijdde zijn leven aan een uitbundige en gevarieerde muzikale productie. De jaren tachtig doorkruiste Prince met zijn kenmerkende ondeugendheid en durf.

Nadat hij grote successen had geboekt (met ‘Little Red Corvette’, ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Kiss’, ‘Sign O’ The Times’ en ‘Batdance’) en meer dan 100 miljoen albums had verkocht, wist Prince zichzelf bij elk nieuw album opnieuw uit te vinden. Steeds weer kwam hij als herboren terug, altijd verrassend door nieuwe artistieke richtingen en tijdloos dankzij zijn muzikale talent. Die wedergeboortes staan allemaal in Prince Compleet, een onmisbaar overzichtswerk van de duizelingwekkende discografie van de man die letterlijk een symbool werd.

Van Madonna tot Miles Davis, van Michael Jackson en Kate Bush, alle grote namen in de populaire muziek wilden ooit met Prince opnemen. Sinds de onverwachte dood van de artiest in 2016 is The Prince Estate bezig om uit The Vault, de kluis die zijn kostbare en ogenschijnlijk onuitputtelijke muzikale productiviteit beschermt, nummers op te graven die nog niet eerder zijn uitgebracht. Duizenden stukken sluimeren daar nog altijd, en elke release is een wereldwijd evenement.
