Hij geeft regelmatig commentaar voor Nederlandse en Belgische media over de Amerikaanse actualiteit en geschiedenis en is vaste medewerker van het Historisch Nieuwsblad. Benjamin Franklin is geboren op 17 januari 1706 in Boston. Hij was een veelzijdig mens en behoorde tot de zogenaamde Founding Fathers van de Verenigde Staten. Naast politiek denker en diplomaat was hij ook uitvinder. Hij bedacht onder meer bifocale brillenglazen en de bliksemafleider. Hij wees als eerste op het bestaan van golfstromen en ontwikkelde een eigen theorie over elektriciteit. Hij overleed op 17 april 1790 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, waar hij ook begraven is, en werd 84 jaar oud.
