Catherine Merridale is an award-winning writer and broadcaster with an internationally acknowledged expertise in Russia and the former Soviet Union. A pioneer of oral history in the region, her first major book, Night of Stone (Granta, 2000), won the Royal Society of Literature’s Heinemann Prize and was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson Prize in 2001. More recently, Red Fortress: The Secret Heart of Russia’s History (Allen Lane, 2013) won both the Wolfson History Prize and the Pushkin House Russian Book Prize in 2014. Ivan’s War (Faber, 2005) tells the stories of ordinary Red Army soldiers in Europe’s last great land-based war, while Lenin on the Train (Allen Lane, 2016) tracks Europe’s collective and bungling responsibility for the Great October Revolution.

In fact, vampire epidemics have flared up throughout history—in ancient Assyria, China, and Rome, medieval and early modern Europe, and the Americas. In de wereld van historici is in de afgelopen jaren de beweging op gang gekomen om op zoek te gaan naar niet alleen de geschiedenis en verhalen van koningen en andere leiders, maar voor zover mogelijk, ook aandacht te besteden aan ‘gewone mensen’ wat hun leven bepaalde waarmee ze bezig waren en hun rituelen. Bovendien draaide het tot voor kort nauwelijks om de rol die vrouwen speelden.

Aangezien over deze onderzoeksgebieden vaak nauwelijks geschreven, laat staan betrouwbare, bronnen beschikbaar zijn, vergt dit een andere aanpak. Verborgen levens, het boek van de Britse cultuurhistoricus Eleanor Barraclough laat overtuigend zien dat deze nieuwe aanpak werkt, sterker nog een boeiend en uitstekend boek kan opleveren.

Het historisch onderzoek dat zij heeft gedaan naar het leven van de normale Vikingbevolking en heeft beschreven in haar nieuwe boek vertelt een ander verhaal dan alleen dat van de gruwelijkheden en het heldendom dat vaak gepaard gaat met wat we van de Noormannen te lezen krijgen. Uiterst knap weet ze over het dagelijks leven van Vikingvrouwen, -mannen en -kinderen in alle schakeringen te vertellen.

Bijzonder is dat het leven dat de Vikingen leefden in veel opzichten lijkt op dat van ons, veel minder exotisch is dan het bevooroordeelde beeld dat tot voor kort vaak geschetst werd. En grappig genoeg zijn de verhalen over de Vikingen niet minder boeiend dan de heldensaga waarmee we meer vertrouwd zijn. Why do societies only remember their own national war dead? Today, the enemy dead might be largely hidden from view, but this wasn’t always the case. During both world wars, Germans and Britons died in their thousands in enemy territory. From Berlin to Bath, London to Leipzig, civilian communities buried the enemy in the closest parish churchyard. Perhaps surprisingly, local people embraced these graves, often caring for them with considerable tenderness.

Tim Grady explores the history of this curious aspect of postwar community. He reveals how, as the two states moved bodies to new military cemeteries, local people protested at the disturbance of the dead, and ties between the bereaved families and those who cared for the graves were severed forever. With the enemy out of sight and mind, the British and Germans concentrated solely on commemorating their own war dead, and their own sacrifices. Today’s insular public memory of the world wars was only made possible by clearing away signs of the enemy—allowing people to tell themselves much simpler narratives of the recent past as a result.

Tim Grady is professor of modern history at the University of Chester. He is the author of A Deadly Legacy, which was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize and the Cundill Prize, and The German-Jewish Soldiers of the First World War in History and Memory, which was proxime accessit for the RHS Gladstone Book Prize.

In Regen van verwoesting contextualiseert Richard Overy de verwoestende bombardementen op Japan in 1945, waarbij meer dan 300.000 Japanse slachtoffers vielen. Het bombardement op Tokio in maart verbrandde bijna heel de stad, de atoombom op Hiroshima in augustus doodde zo’n 119.000 burgers en na een tweede nucleaire aanval op Nagasaki capituleerde Japan.

Vooraanstaand oorlogskenner Richard Overy biedt een nieuw perspectief op deze laatste fase van de oorlog en de rol van de bombardementen. Hij onderzoekt hoe het doden van burgers en het vernietigen van steden tijdens de oorlog genormaliseerd raakten en hoe morele bezwaren verwaterden. Overy geeft een diepgaande analyse van de Japanse capitulatie – was het luchtoffensief daadwerkelijk de directe oorzaak van de overgave? – en de oorlogsstrategie die vanaf 1945 in gebieden buiten Europa ineens wel acceptabel was. Een strategie die tot vandaag de dag door sommigen als militair noodzakelijk wordt gezien, door anderen als oorlogsmisdaden die ongestraft zijn gebleven.

Richard Overy is geboren op 23 december 1947 in Engeland. Hij is hoogleraar geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Exeter. Hij publiceerde 25 boeken over de Tweede Wereldoorlog en het Derde Rijk, waaronder 1939: de zes dagen voor het uitbreken van de oorlog, het imponerende Kroniek van het Derde Rijk en de veelgeprezen De verhoren en Dictators. Overy werd geëerd met de drie prestigieuze geschiedenisprijzen. Zijn werk werd gekenschetst als ‘authentiek, van belang’ door de New York Review en als ‘baanbrekend’ door de Times.
