Muriel Spark was born on 1 February 1918 in Edinburgh, Scotland 
where she also went to school. She wrote poetry, stories, biographies, and a remarkable series of novels. She won countless awards, was made an an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and in 1993 was given an OBE. She died at the age of 88 on 13 April 2006 in Oliveto, Tuscany, Italy and was buried at the Cemetery of Sant’Andrea Apostolo, Civitella in Val di Chiana.
