Flaptekst van de lesbische roman uit 1928 van Radclyffe Hall

The seminal work of gay literature that sparked an infamous legal trial for obscenity and went on to become a bestseller.

The Well of Loneliness tells the story of tomboyish Stephen, who hunts, wears trousers and cuts her hair short – and who gradually comes to realise that she is attracted to women. Charting her romantic and professional adventures during the First World War and beyond, the novel provoked a furore on first publication in 1928 for its lesbian heroine and led to a notorious legal trial for obscenity. Hall herself, however, saw the book as a pioneer work and today it is recognised as a landmark work of gay fiction.

This Penguin edition includes a new introduction by Maureen Duffy.

Radclyffe Hall was born on 12 August 1880 in Bournemouth, The Well of Loneliness Radclyffe Hall Lesbian Novel from 1928 First EditionHampshire, England. After an unhappy childhood, she inherited her father’s estate and from then on was free to travel and live as she chose. She fell in love and lived with an older woman before settling down with Una Troubridge, a married sculptor. Hall wrote many books but is best known for The Well of Loneliness, first published in 1928. She died in 7 October 1943 in London, 63 years of age due to cancer of the rectum and is buried in Highgate Cemetery in London.

Flaptekst van het boek met gedichten van Sonia Sanchez

hear your voice
a wild sea pausing in the wind

Few poets in history have possessed the irrepressible humanity and abundant positivity that characterize Sonia Sanchez’s astonishing body of work.

Energetic, infectious and rich with sonic exuberance, Sanchez’s poems have radically transformed the direction of American poetry over the past six decades and have been an inspiration to readers around the world, including Toni Morrison and Chinua Achebe. This volume draws on Sanchez’s diverse repertoire to showcase the multiplicities of the poet’s voice – the profound and personal, the firebrand and socially conscious, the playful and formally dextrous, and the musical – to celebrate her as one of the world’s most skilled and versatile poets of the past half century.

Flaptekst boek van de Zuid-Koreaanse schrijfster Oh Jung-hee

In this emblematic selection of her stories, Oh Jung-hee probes beneath the surface of seemingly quotidian lives to expose nightmarish family configurations warped by desertion, psychosis, and death. In ‘Chinatown’ a young girl living on the edge of the city’s Chinese community comes of age among mundane violences, collisions with adult sexuality and the American occupation; in ‘The Garden Party’ a woman grapples with her conflicting identities of wife, mother and writer at an alcohol-fuelled gathering. Throughout a career spanning six decades, Oh Jung-hee has drawn comparisons to Alice Munro, Virginia Woolf, and Joyce Carol Oates, and is assuredly a trailblazing writer.

Oh Jung-hee is born 9 November 1947 in Seoul, South Korea. She is often considered the grande dame of South Korean literature. Her work has received both the Yi Sang Literary Award and the Dong-in Literary Award, South Korea’s most prestigious prizes for short fiction, and has been translated into multiple languages in Southeast Asia, Latin America, the United States, and Europe.

Flaptekst van de roman uit 1962 van de Italiaanse schrijver Carlo Emilio Gadda

At the height of Fascist rule in Italy and following the death of his mother, Carlo Emilio Gadda began work on his first novel, The Experience of Pain. This portrait of a highly educated young man whose anger and frustration frequently erupt in ferocious outbursts directed towards his ageing mother is a powerful critique of the society of his time and the deep wounds inflicted on his generation. Set in a fictional South American country, The Experience of Pain is at once richly imaginative and intensely personal: the perfect introduction to Gadda’s innovative style and literary virtuosity.

Flaptekst van de roman uit 1929 van de Chinese schrijver Lao She

A deliciously funny and moving comedy-of-manners about a Chinese father and son’s experiences at the height of London’s Jazz Age.

He was in London – why be bothered looking at it? Wasn’t it bad enough just being there?’

Newly arrived from China, Mr Ma and his son Ma Wei run an antiques shop nestled by St Paul’s Cathedral, where they try to make a living amid the smog and bustle of 1920s London. As they struggle with money, misunderstandings and the ways of the English – from the overbearing patronage of missionary Reverend Ely to their well-meaning landlady Mrs Weddeburn and her carefree daughter – can understanding, even love, blossom? Both a moving story of the Chinese immigrant experience and a bitingly funny satire on the English, Mr Ma and Son delicately portrays the dreams and disappointments of those seeking a new life in a distant land.

Lao She was born in 3 February 1899 to a poor Manchu family in Beijing. He left China in his mid-twenties to teach Chinese at the University of London, where he stayed for the next five years. Mr Ma and Son was his third and final novel written during his London years, and was serialized in 1929. He continued to teach and write upon his return to China, and became an established and respected author renowned for his humorist style. He ventured into the realm of satire and science fiction with Cat Country in 1932, also published by Penguin. He committed suicide in Beijing on 24 august 1966, a few years after being labelled an anti-Maoist and counter-revolutionary by the Red Guards.

  • “If one were to imagine a perfect specimen of a ‘forgotten classic’ by a woman writer from the 1960s and ’70s, you might come up with The Princess of 72nd Street… it’s a slender, accomplished and frequently funny work told from the perspective of a lively and bruised female consciousness….Its first-person narration feels essayistic, full of bold declarations about heterosexual love, gender roles and aesthetics.” (Washington Post)

Flaptekst van de Amerikaanse roman uit 1979 van Elaine Kraf

Ellen is a single artist living alone on New York’s Upper West Side in the 1970s. She is beset by old boyfriends, paint pigment choices, and, occasionally, by ‘radiances’ – episodes of joyous, reckless unreality. Under the influence of ‘radiances’ she becomes Princess Esmeralda, and West 72nd Street becomes the kingdom over which she rules. Life as Esmeralda is a liberating experience for Ellen, who, despite the chaos and stigma these episodes can bring, relishes the respite from the confines of the everyday. And yet those around her, particularly the men in her life, are threatened by her incarnation as Esmeralda, and by the freedom that it gives her.

The Princess of 72nd Streetis Elaine Kraf’s witty, dizzyingly inventive take on female liberation and mental health, a work of immense literary power and unbridled energy. Provocative at the time of its publication in 1979 and thoroughly iconoclastic, it is a remarkable portrait of an unforgettable woman.

Elaine Kraf (21 February 1936, New York City – 26 June 2013) was a writer and painter. She was the author of four published works of fiction: I Am Clarence (1969), The House of Madelaine (1971), Find Him! (1977) and The Princess of 72nd Street (1979)—as well as several unpublished novels, plays and poetry collections. She was the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts awards, a 1971 fellowship at the Broad Loaf Writers’ Conference and a 1977 residency at Yaddo. She was born and lived in New York City.

Flaptekst van het boek met de verzamelde gedichten van Dionne Brand

An immense achievement, comprising a decades-long career – new and collected poetry from one of Canada’s most honoured and significant poets.

Spanning almost four decades, Dionne Brand’s poetry has given rise to whole new grammars and vocabularies. With a profound alertness that is attuned to this world and open to some other, possibly future, time and place, Brand’s ongoing labours of witness and imagination speak directly to where and how we live and reach beyond those worlds, their enclosures, and their violences.

Nomenclature: New and Collected Poems begins with a new long poem, the titular “Nomenclature for the Time Being,” in which Dionne Brand’s diaspora consciousness dismantles our quotidian disasters. In addition to this searing new work, Nomenclature collects eight volumes of Brand’s poetry published between 1982 and 2010 and includes a critical introduction by the literary scholar and theorist Christina Sharpe.

It features the searching and centering cantos of Primitive Offensive; the sharp musical conversations of Winter Epigrams and Epigrams to Ernesto Cardenal in Defense of Claudia; the documentary losses of revolutions in Chronicles of the Hostile Sun, in which “The street was empty/with all of us standing there.” No Language Is Neutral connects language, coloniality, and sexuality. Land to Light On explores intimacies and disaffections with nationality and the nation-state, while in thirsty a cold-eyed flâneur surveys the workings of the city. In Inventory, written during the Gulf Wars, the poet is “the wars’ last and late night witness,” her job not to soothe but to “revise and revise this bristling list/hourly.” Ossuaries‘ futurist speaker rounds out the collection, and threads multiple temporal worlds – past, present, and future.

This masterwork displays Dionne Brand’s ongoing body of thought – trenchant, lyrical, absonant, discordant, and meaning-making. Nomenclature: New and Collected Poems is classic and living, a record of one of the great writers of our age.

Dionne Brand (Guayaguayare, Trinidad and Tobago, 7 januari 1953) is the author of twenty-three books of poetry, fiction and essays. She has received numerous awards, including the Griffin Poetry Prize, the Trillium Book Award, and the Windham-Campbell Prize for Fiction. From 2009 to 2012 Brand served as Toronto’s Poet Laureate, and in 2017 she was named to the Order of Canada. She lives in Toronto.
