She wrote over twenty books, including Trafalgar (1979) and the fantastical Kalpa Imperial (1983), which was translated into English by Ursula K. Le Guin. Her work has been compared to that of Borges and Calvino, and she won numerous literary prizes as well as an award for her contribution to women’s rights. In 2011 she received a World Fantasy Award for lifetime achievement.

Leonard received the Lifetime Achievement Award from PEN US and the Grand Master Award from the Mystery Writers of America. Leonard died on 20 August 2013 in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, aged 87.

Her first novel, The Road Through the Wall, was published in the same year and was followed by Hangsaman, The Bird’s Nest, The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House (De geesten van Hill House) and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (We hebben altijd in een kasteel gewoond), widely seen as her masterpiece. She has also received many other awards including the Robert Creeley Award, the Frost Medal, the Wallace Stevens Award, and the Anisfield-Wolf Lifetime Achievement Award. She lives in Philadelphia.

He is widely recognised as an irreverent, risk-taking writer who redefined the novel and made the link between the European avant-garde and the American Beat generation. At the age of 88 he died on 7 June 1980 in Los Angeles, California.

But, deciding to travel further a field and knowing only the Spanish phrase for ‘Will you please give me a glass of water?’, he heads for Spain. With just a blanket to sleep under and his trusty violin, he spends a year crossing Spain, from Vigo in the north to the southern coast. Only the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War puts an end to his extraordinary peregrinations.

Laurie Lee was born on 24 Juni 1914 in Stroud, Gloucestershire in Engeland. Hehas written some of the best-loved travel books in the English language. Born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, in 1914, he was educated at Slad village school and Stroud Central School. At the age of nineteen he walked to London and then travelled on foot through Spain, where he was trapped by the outbreak of the Civil War. He later returned by crossing the Pyrenees, as he recounted in A Moment of War. He died on 13 May 1997 is Slad, Gloucestershire, aged 82. He published four collections of poems: The Sun My Monument (1944), The Bloom of Candles (1947), My Many-Coated Man (1955) and Pocket Poets (1960). His other works include The Voyage of Magellan (1948), The Firstborn (1964), I Can’t Stay Long (1975), and Two Women (1983). He also wrote three bestselling volumes of autobiography: Cider with Rosie (1959), which has sold over six million copies worldwide, As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) and A Moment of War (1991).

Penelope Lively was born 17 March 1933 in Cairo, Egypt. She was appointed CBE in the 2001 New Year’s Honours List, and DBE in 2012. Penelope Lively lives in London.
