Op veertig jarige leeftijd vond Glen de Randamie het tijd worden om de balans op te maken van de eerste helft van zijn leven. Hij richt zich in zijn boek vooral op zijn innerlijke strijd, een zoektocht naar persoonlijke ontwikkeling, om met een modewoord te spreken; zingeving. Maar hij gaat zelfs verder terug dan zijn eigen leven. Hij zoekt de wortels van zijn eigen ontstaan in de koloniale littekens die terug te voeren zijn tot het slavernijverleden van zijn voorouders in Suriname. Waardoor hij een verklaring vindt voor een diep gevoel van verdriet waarmee hij zo nu en dan te maken heeft.

Het boek is ook een verslag van zelfontdekking, zijn soms bovenmatige wens om anderen plezier te doen en zichzelf hierin uiteindelijk te vergeten. Ook de persoonlijke invulling van het geloof dat Glen de Radamie ervaart krijgt de ruimte. Verwacht dus geen boek met verslagen van ruige concerten en wilde avonturen van een succesvolle muzikant, alhoewel er natuurlijk welk ruimte is voor de muziek. Liefde is de baas is bovenal een introspectief boek van een succesvolle muzikant die ondanks al het succes worstelt met het leven en de onzekerheid die hieruit voortvloeit. Maar achter die glimlach schuilde lang een duisternis, met depressieve perioden waarin zelfs muziek geen verlichting kon brengen.

In dit boek neemt Typhoon je mee op zijn reis van de pieken op het podium tot de dalen achter de schermen. Als hij op zoek gaat naar zijn roots komt hij op het spoor van een krachtige Surinaamse levenswijsheid: lobi da basi – liefde is de baas. Het groeit uit tot een kompas dat helpt oude patronen te doorbreken en onzekerheden om te buigen, om uiteindelijk met een open en liefdevolle houding in het leven te staan. Typhoon is geboren op 6 augustus 1984 in het dorp ’t Harde in Gelderland. Zijn echte naam is Glenn de Randamie. Hij begon als vijftienjarige met rappen, samen met onder andere zijn broer Blaxtar en zijn vrienden Sticks en Rico (Opgezwolle, Fakkelbrigade).

Op zijn twintigste won hij de Grote Prijs van Nederland. Sindsdien is hij niet meer van het podium weg te denken. Hij won onder meer drie Edisons voor Beste Album, Beste Hiphop en Beste Video. Het album ‘Lobi Da Basi’ (Liefde is de Baas) uit 2014 betekende zijn doorbraak bij het grote publiek en behaalde een platina status. De meermaals tot Beste Live Act bekroonde rapper vierde afgelopen jaar zijn twintigjarig jubileum met een live spektakel. Het jubileumconcert is terug te luisteren op het album Typhoon ‘Live’ dat 8 november jl werd uitgebracht.

Naast muzikale optredens deelt Typhoon zijn Liefde is de baas-filosofie ook als keynote-spreker voor bedrijven en instellingen.

His songwriting flourished in classics like “Tears of Rage,” cowritten with Dylan, and “We Can Talk.” His keyboard work added a lovable funkiness to the Band’s sound, blending elements of rock, folk, country, and blues into what would become the genesis of Americana.

Despite the Band’s successes, Manuel struggled with personal demons, battling addiction and inner turmoil. Looking beyond his human frailty, this book celebrates Richard Manuel’s immeasurable contributions to music, ensuring that memories of his voice and artistry endure.
