Wat is ¡pónk!, u vraagt?
¡Pónk! is een boek, ik zeg, en ¡pónk! is mjoeziek ik verderzegmeer.
¡pónk! is de tonk nee de bonk of de vonk van slechtbrein koptieke tijden de tronk ter stond van transglobaal ondergrond of de droom van honderd naties of onkruideter misschien traagleven of snelweg een drie die ook een een kon zijn wat werd wat bekwam van de zonk van de dronk of de junk zo erg funk ja punk als fuck geweten door het hart de ogentroost de dood en bloei de evenmens ons tijd torens modder adem oosten heilige ravioli in een drugsvrije zone technocratische chinese griep de in radikaalste zin bevrijde punk van de Zwarte jongens en de bruine jongens en de meisjes en de vrouwen en de Aziaten en de trans en de bi en de homo’s en de lesbo’s en de armen en iedereen bevroren in de marge. ¡pónk! is de punk van Los Saicos. Waarin immer doorwortelt de wortels van de psychobilly (u dacht aan andere wortels, niet?). De punk van The Bags. Van The Linda Lindas. Van Bikini Kill. Maar evengoed de punk van Marvin Gaye of Prince. In ¡pónk! hoeft de gitaar niet leidend te zijn. De houding. De idee. De luidheid van de houding, en van de idee. Meer punk dan ¡ponk! wordt het niet, zeker niet als ver als de witte punk gaat. De witte punk die ziek werd van zijn eigen oi. O. Het begon goed. In eerste instantie wilde oi punk alleen maar democratiseren. Er heeft, niettegenstaande alle anarchie, altijd iets elitairs gekleefd aan punk; het waren veelal witte mannen uit de gegoede burgerij die punk maakten, en zongen over sociale ongelijkheid. Oi wou een punk voor het volk. Cockney Rejects. Angelic Upstairs. Sham 69. Maar met Skrewdriver kreeg oi een uiterst onfrisse wending. De boze oompjes. Dat krijg je als je dingen naar het volk brengt. Want het volk is altijd boos. Op alles dat het niet begrijpt, op alles dat niet goed genoeg lijkt op het volk is het volk boos. Vijandig. Bekrompen. Onverdraagzaam. Voor de witte punks kan alleen Minor Threat punk zijn. Schuldig aan wit zijn. Schuldig aan gelijk hebben (oke dat werkt alleen in het Engels). Voor de witte punks kan alleen FEAR punk zijn (maar eerlijk is eerlijk, Clayton, FEAR is niet halfslecht) (Scott Thunes heeft bij FEAR gespeeld) (voorwaar, ik zeg u). Witte punks zeggen: punk is Sex Pistols. Maar ¡pónk! zegt: Sex Pistols gaat niet over muziek, en nog minder over punk, Sex Pistols gaat over mode, Sex Pistols was een godverdomd boybandje! (de nagel op de kop, Clayton, de nagel op de kop) (maar niet alle pijlen op Lydon me peinst, PIL was al veel beter dan Sex Pistols, PIL was punk en misschien zelfs wel bijna ¡pónk!)(en ik heb wel eens beelden gezien waaruit bleek dat Lydon een ongelooflijk aardige gast is) (ach hij had mij al toen hij die bolle van de wereld draait door afbekte vanwege zijn stomme onkundige domme gelul).
Dus ja. ¡Pónk! is, u snapt, een muziekboek. Hoofdpersoon Moose is gitarist in de ¡pónk!-band Pipebomb! En dus gaat veel van dit boek over gedoe in repetitieruimtes, over optredens, over hoe het is om in kleine zaaltjes te spelen, een optreden voor voornamelijk witte punks die liever Agnostic Front hadden gezien, die klojo’s van Pipebomb! spelen te langzaam, als een soort pseudo-Fugazi ofzo, de gitarist draagt een shirt met bloemen erop, bloemen!, god betere het, dat is niet punk, een moeizame, eerder gewelddadige moshpit. Drummer Id y Yacht scheldt het publiek uit voor posers (wie was het weer die vanaf het podium riep Bring me a dead poser!, waarop, zo gaat toch het verhaal, heel het publiek als één man de zaal uit rende op zoek naar posers die ze konden kielhalen, was dat Paul Baloff?) (leeft Paul Baloff nog?) (leeft die poser nog?). Maar evengoed de geslaagde konserten, de lof, en de bijna lieve moshpits. Het mooist, echter, vond ik een scéne waarin Pipebomb! zich vlak voor een optreden aan het inspelen is. Het publiek is er nog niet. Dat publiek. Met zijn houdinkjes zijn posetjes zijn meninkjes zijn ideetjes. Bij afwezigheid van dat alles kan de muziek vrijelijk stromen. Zonder één man publiek verzorgt Pipebomb! een fenomenaal optreden. De muziek is overal. In de speakers, daarbuiten, daarboven, daaronder. Muziek als roes. De allerhoogste. De helende kracht van het universum. Als Albert Ayler ooit zei. In slechts enkele, maar zeer briljante, regels beschrijft Clayton hoe het (denk ik) is om muziek te maken, deelachtig zijn aan die ene dimensie die de luisteraar nooit kan ervaren: tegelijk zender en ontvanger te zijn. De roes creëren én hem ondergaan. Mojer dan dit is er zelden over muziek geschreven. Want je voelt het. De lezer voelt het. De lezer voelt dan en daar de mjoeziek uit zijn vingertoppen stromen en dan weet je dat de schrijver een magiër is.
Ook als het niet over Pipebomb! gaat, gaat ¡Pónk! over muziek. Moose is niet alleen muzikant maar ook academicus. Als professor geeft hij les in Engelse compositie. Tijdens een college geeft hij studenten de opdracht om te luisteren naar de liedjes die hij op zet om dan, als thesis, zo onderbouwd mogelijk, te formuleren wat er goed of slecht aan is. Moose laat Tourettes voorbij komen. Van Nirvana’s zwanenzang In Utero. Een plaat velen malen beter dan Nevermind naar toch nog altijd een zwaar overschatte band, dat Nirvana (als The Sex Pistols) (en ja, zeker ook Boele, als The Beatles) (meent gij nu echt dat The Beatles alles vanaf kras maakten?). Een student reageert op clichématige, voordehandliggende manier op het lied, een andere student maakt veel doordachtere opmerkingen. En dan vooral de gedachten die die eerste student aanjoeg bij Moose! Ik lachte de vroege ochtend -het was nog maar kwart na zes- aan flarden. Ofnee. Dat is niet waar. Ik grinnikte een paar krasjes op een knisperverse ochtend. Dat wel. Want niet alleen de mjoeziek. Ohnee. Ook de humor.
En.
Alles waarin ¡Pónk! méér is dan een muziekboek. Deze roman gaat ook over de even onuitroeibare als diepmenselijke neiging alles altijd maar te willen klasseren. De muur waar Pipebomb! veelal tegenaan loopt: is hun muziek wel punk genoeg? Is hun kleding wel punk genoeg? Is hun alles wel punk genoeg? U weet wel hoe dat gaat. Wees iets te scheutig met een element of twee en voor je het weet hoor je ineens in een gans ander genre thuis. Verdoemd de punker die zich te buiten gaat aan grindcore, dan speelt hij toch echt powerviolence! (maar ach, probeer maar eens iets tegen Charles Bronson te hebben!) (de band, niet het filmpersonage). Pipebomb! wordt, bijvoorbeeld, geboekt voor een QTPOC-festival (misschien ben ik een wereldvreemde dwaas, maar ik moest dat opzoeken, het betekent Queer and Trans People of Colour) maar niemand in de band is Q of T, en slechts twee bandleden zijn POC. In welke hokjes wordt de band gepropt, in welke hokjes wil de band beslist niet gepropt? Ook in zijn persoonlijke leven worstelt Moose met dit soort vragen. Zijn moeder is Costaricaans; zijn vader is Zwart, en hiermee staat het hoogleraarschap van Moose op de universiteit goed op de diversiteitslijst. En kan hij de lesstof misschien wat “ontkoloniseren”. Maar waar staat hij als persoon? En als hij naar een hogergeplaatste stapt omdat een student, een nazi, een aardige gast eigenlijk wel, die nazi, een essay geschreven heeft waarin echt verschrikkelijke dingen over Mexicanen staan, is het commentaar slechts een lauw “ach dit is maar een ruwe versie, met wat herzieningen betert dat wel”. En hoe kan hij, Moose, zelf eigenlijk die superwitte academiese wereld verenigen met zijn ¡ponk!-hart en zijn half Costaricaanse, half Zwarte achtergrond? En is hij voor de familie van zijn moeder eigenlijk nog wel Costaricaans genoeg? En hoe met al die agenten in de familie, een nicht begint zelfs een “blue lifes matter”-beweging, en daar komt Moose opdraven, op een familiefeestje waar het dus stikt van de agenten, met zijn punky ACAB-speldje (misschien ben ik een wereldvreemde dwaas, maar ik moest dat opzoeken, het betekent All Cops Are Bastards). Moose’s vriendin, Turtledove, ineens academicus, kent gelijke worstelingen. Grappig, op een wat wrange manier dan, is de scene waarin ze een lezing houdt die onophoudelijk wordt verstoord door een vent met een MAGA-petje (misschien ben ik een wereldvreemde dwaas, maar ik moest dat opzoeken, het betekent Make America Great Again, het is zo’n achterlijk Trump-petje), uiteindelijk loopt Turtledove boos de zaal uit, rukt het MAGA-petje van die vent zijn kop, loopt ermee de straat op, werpt het in de zee maar bedenkt zich even later dat dat niet strookt met haar milieubewuste uitgangspunten; in een poging in een tamelijk woeste zee het petje op te vissen, verliest ze haar spijkerjas – de pet is gered maar uiteindelijk is er veel meer vervuilend materiaal in de zee achtergebleven.
“To be othered”, is een belangrijk thema in dit boek. Is daar een goede Nederlandse term voor? Geanderd worden, nee ik hou het voorlopig op “tot de Ander” gemaakt worden. Er is altijd wel een groep die zich het recht toe eigent aan te wijzen wie de “Anderen” zijn. Die “Anderen” kunnen er alleen maar zijn als er een maatstaf is; de groep die zichzelf tot maat neemt. Wij. Ons. Er zijn er die bij ons mogen horen, en er zijn er die niet bij ons mogen horen. Het gepolitiekiseerde ons; de gepolitiekiseerde “Ander”. De gemarginaliseerden. De afgewezenen. Degenen die niet zijn als alle anderen, en daarmee de radikale “Andere” zijn. Omdat je afkomst anders is, je denkkaders anders zijn, en je punk zo anders is dat het prompt ¡pónk! geworden is.
Niet alleen de personages, ook het boek zelve laat zich lastig kaderen. Is het autofictie? Marcus Clayton heeft een moeder die uit Costa Rica komt, en zijn vader is Zwart. Marcus Clayton geeft les. (ben jij borg nu?) (hij heeft je waarschijnlijk geblokkeerd op soosjale media) (hij haat augurken al bijna net zo erg als hij Taylor Swift haat). Marcus Clayton speelt in een punkband, p’don, in een ¡pónk!band, niet Pipebomb! (ik ken een band die This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb heet) maar tudors. Marcus Clayton schrijft over dingen die bestaan. Agenten bestaan, Tinder bestaat, universiteiten bestaan, de oceaan bestaat. Hoeveel Clayton zit er in Moose? In ieder geval is niet alles pure fictie hier.
Of lees ik hier een libretto, een opera, dagboekproza misschien? Een brievenroman, zou kunnen. Het boek bevat een paar brieven, elektronies of anderszins; de interessantste ervan is die van Moose aan een zangeres. Of. Naja. De Moose van voor hij Turtledove kende had wat afspraakjes via Tinder; een ervan met een vrouw, de mysterieuze J, die inmiddels, en hoeveel daarvan is echt? vraagt een mens zich onwillekeurig af, een tamelik bekende zangeres zou zijn, nu getrouwd met een vrouw. De brief reflecteert op het handvol afspraakjes dat Moose en J met elkaar gehad heeft en is alleen al lezing van het hele boek waard. Wat te denken van iemand die een vrouw op het twede afspraakje reeds Algiers laat horen – wat een goede band is dát- –ik heb ze ook in mijn seedeekast– —een seedee die een titel deelt met een boek van Blake Butler— —-waarom heb ik na een jaar nog steeds Aannex niet helemaal uitgelezen?—- wat leidt tot een gesprek over de vraag of Algiers wel echt punk te noemen is wat leidt tot een gesprek over de vraag of een opname van de Apocalyps niet de ultieme punkplaat zou opleveren, sjee, wat een fantasties twede afspraakje moet dat geweest zijn? Moose mijmert erover in de brief aan de vrouw. Sluit af met een hele rake opmerking over woordspelingen: waarom zou het grappig zijn dat iets ook iets anders kan betekenen? Het is de gemakkelijkste vorm van humor inderdaad (je hoeft er zelf immers geen enkel komies talent voor te hebben), en dat woordspelingen überhaupt als humor worden gezien, geeft eigenlijk wel te denken. Zozeer te denken dat het een (vestzak)essay waard zou zijn. Dus. ¡Pónk! als filosofie?
Kan ook.
Of. Het treatment van een documentaire-achtige film?
Een psychosociaal pamflet?
Een boeklang experimenteel poëem?
Of toch maar gewoon een verpletterend mooi muziekboek?
Ten laatste: boek als muziek. De daver van vroege Swans, de vrijheid van Joe McPhee, de poëzie van Art Ensemble of Chicago, de onplaatsbaarheid van Sun Ra, de duisterheid van Nordvargr/Drakh, het anarchisme van You Fantastic! en de punk van ¡pónk!. En dat alles in een nergens dat Llanera heet.

the voices, the steering, someone asks ¿dónde estabas tú en el 77?, someone turns on the box and it’s as if punk never happened, and God is dead and Vos is dead and punk is dead and we’re still alive, it’s almost summer, everything flows, everything looks, everything stands ready, the things went and the things went to Llanera to see our house & the morning suddenly a bit whiter, along the steel interior doors Baby Bird starts about dying happy, it reminds of a weekend that was then and then, how far is then, how far is now, now is here, is nearby, is where I make a sandwich with roast beef, I make it Italian because the roast beef is tougher than I’m used to from this butcher, so some old cheese grated over it & some garlic oil & some herbs and let the sandwich sit while making coffee, now the coffee, pour twice & take out the first cup, only after the first cup add cinnamon to the filter, only after pouring twice add cinnamon to the filter, why only then, I don’t know, that’s just how it is, you have to grant everyone their neuroses, at moments like this the writer misses dregke the most, the writer always misses dregke, the writer misses dregke a lot but never more than at moments like these, music, literature, bread, playing, then silence, then it’s time for The Wild Classical Music Ensemble, and you think how ¡pónk! would Marcus Clayton find The Wild Classical Music Ensemble?
What is ¡pónk!, you ask?
¡Pónk! is a book, I say, and ¡pónk! is mjoeziek I continue.
¡pónk! is the clunk no the thunk or the spark of bad-brain optic times the trunk at once of transglobal underground or the dream of a hundred nations or weeder perhaps slow-living or highway a three that could also be a one that became what accomplished from the sink of the drunk or the junk so much funk yes punk as fuck known by the heart the eyebright the death and bloom the even-man our time towers mud breath east holy ravioli in a drug-free zone technocratic Chinese flu the in most radical sense liberated punk of the Black boys and the brown boys and the girls and the women and the Asians and the trans and the bi and the gays and the lesbians and the poor and everyone frozen in the margin. ¡pónk! is the punk of Los Saicos. In which always roots the roots of psychobilly (you thought of other roots, didn’t you?). The punk of The Bags. Of The Linda Lindas. Of Bikini Kill. But equally the punk of Marvin Gaye or Prince. In ¡pónk! the guitar doesn’t have to be leading. The attitude. The idea. The loudness of the attitude, and of the idea. It doesn’t get more punk than ¡ponk!, certainly not as far as white punk goes. The white punk that got sick of its own oi. O. It started well. Initially oi punk just wanted to democratize. There has, despite all the anarchy, always stuck something elitist to punk; it was mostly white men from the well-to-do bourgeoisie who made punk, and sang about social inequality. Oi wanted punk for the people. Cockney Rejects. Angelic Upstairs. Sham 69. But with Skrewdriver oi took an extremely unsavory turn. The angry uncles. That’s what you get when you bring things to the people. Because the people are always angry. At everything they don’t understand, at everything that doesn’t seem good enough like the people, the people are angry. Hostile. Narrow-minded. Intolerant. For the white punks only Minor Threat can be punk. Guilty of being white. Guilty of being right (okay that only works in English). For the white punks only FEAR can be punk (but to be fair, Clayton, FEAR isn’t half bad) (Scott Thunes has played with FEAR) (truly, I tell you). White punks say: punk is Sex Pistols. But ¡pónk! says: Sex Pistols isn’t about music, and even less about punk, Sex Pistols is about fashion, Sex Pistols was a goddamn boy band! (hit the nail on the head, Clayton, hit the nail on the head) (but not all arrows at Lydon methinks, PIL was already much better than Sex Pistols, PIL was punk and maybe even almost ¡pónk!)(and I’ve seen footage that showed Lydon is an incredibly nice guy) (ah he had me when he dissed that spherical earth spinner for his stupid ignorant dumb bullshit).
So yes. ¡Pónk! is, you understand, a music book. Main character Moose is a guitarist in the ¡pónk! band Pipebomb! And so much of this book is about hassles in rehearsal rooms, about performances, about what it’s like to play in small venues, a performance for mainly white punks who would have preferred to see Agnostic Front, those clowns from Pipebomb! play too slowly, like some pseudo-Fugazi or something, the guitarist wears a shirt with flowers on it, flowers!, God help us, that’s not punk, a difficult, rather violent mosh pit. Drummer Id y Yacht calls the audience posers (who was it again who shouted from the stage Bring me a dead poser!, whereupon, so the story goes, the entire audience as one man ran out of the hall looking for posers they could keel-haul, was that Paul Baloff?) (is Paul Baloff still alive?) (is that poser still alive?). But equally the successful concerts, the praise, and the almost sweet mosh pits. The most beautiful thing, however, I found a scene where Pipebomb! is warming up just before a performance. The audience isn’t there yet. That audience. With its attitudes its poses its opinions its little ideas. In the absence of all that, the music can flow freely. Without a single audience member, Pipebomb! delivers a phenomenal performance. The music is everywhere. In the speakers, outside them, above them, below them. Music as intoxication. The highest of all. The healing power of the universe. As Albert Ayler once said. In just a few, but very brilliant, lines Clayton describes how it (I think) is to make music, to partake in that one dimension that the listener can never experience: to be both sender and receiver simultaneously. To create the intoxication AND experience it. More beautiful than this has rarely been written about music. Because you feel it. The reader feels it. The reader then and there feels the mjoeziek flow from their fingertips and then you know the writer is a magician.
Even when it’s not about Pipebomb!, ¡Pónk! is about music. Moose is not only a musician but also an academic. As a professor he teaches English composition. During a lecture he gives students the assignment to listen to the songs he plays and then, as a thesis, formulate as substantiated as possible what’s good or bad about it. Moose plays Tourettes. From Nirvana’s swan song In Utero. A record many times better than Nevermind yet still a heavily overrated band, that Nirvana (like The Sex Pistols) (and yes, certainly also Boele, like The Beatles) (do you really believe The Beatles made everything from scratch?). One student responds in a clichéd, obvious way to the song, another student makes much more thoughtful remarks. And then especially the thoughts that first student aroused in Moose! I laughed the early morning -it was only quarter past six- to shreds. Or no. That’s not true. I chuckled a few scratches on a crispy morning. That yes. Because not only the mjoeziek. Oh no. Also the humor.
And.
Everything in which ¡Pónk! is MORE than a music book. This novel is also about the equally ineradicable and deeply human tendency to always want to classify everything. The wall that Pipebomb! often runs into: is their music punk enough? Is their clothing punk enough? Is their everything punk enough? You know how it goes. Be a bit too generous with an element or two and before you know it you suddenly belong in a completely different genre. Damn the punker who indulges in grindcore, then he really plays powerviolence! (but ah, try to have something against Charles Bronson!) (the band, not the film character). Pipebomb! is, for example, booked for a QTPOC festival (maybe I’m a sheltered fool, but I had to look that up, it means Queer and Trans People of Colour) but no one in the band is Q or T, and only two band members are POC. In what boxes is the band put, in what boxes does the band definitely not want to be put? Also in his personal life Moose struggles with these kinds of questions. His mother is Costa Rican; his father is Black, and with this Moose’s professorship at the university looks good on the diversity list. And can he perhaps “decolonize” the curriculum a bit. But where does he stand as a person? And when he goes to a superior because a student, a Nazi, actually a nice guy though, that Nazi, has written an essay with really terrible things about Mexicans in it, the comment is just a lukewarm “ah this is just a rough version, with some revisions it will get better”. And how can he, Moose, actually reconcile that super-white academic world with his ¡ponk! heart and his half Costa Rican, half Black background? And is he actually still Costa Rican enough for his mother’s family? And how about all those cops in the family, a cousin even starts a “blue lifes matter” movement, and there Moose shows up, at a family party that’s crawling with cops, with his punky ACAB badge (maybe I’m a sheltered fool, but I had to look that up, it means All Cops Are Bastards). Moose’s girlfriend, Turtledove, also an academic, has similar struggles. Funny, in a somewhat bitter way, is the scene where she gives a lecture that is constantly interrupted by a guy with a MAGA cap (maybe I’m a sheltered fool, but I had to look that up, it means Make America Great Again, it’s one of those stupid Trump caps), finally Turtledove angrily walks out of the hall, snatches the MAGA cap from that guy’s head, goes outside with it, throws it in the sea but then realizes that doesn’t align with her environmentally conscious principles; in an attempt to fish the cap out of a rather turbulent sea, she loses her denim jacket – the cap is saved but ultimately much more polluting material has remained in the sea.
“To be othered” is an important theme in this book. Is there a good Dutch term for that? Being othered, no I’ll stick with “being made into the Other” for now. There’s always a group that arrogates to itself the right to indicate who the “Others” are. Those “Others” can only exist if there’s a standard; the group that takes itself as the measure. We. Us. There are those who may belong with us, and there are those who may not belong with us. The politicized us; the politicized “Other”. The marginalized. The rejected. Those who are not like all others, and thereby the radical “Other”. Because your background is different, your frameworks of thought are different, and your punk is so different that it promptly became ¡pónk!.
Not only the characters, but the book itself is difficult to frame. Is it autofiction? Marcus Clayton has a mother who comes from Costa Rica, and his father is Black. Marcus Clayton teaches. (I know a band called This Bike Is A Pipe Bomb) but tudors. Marcus Clayton writes about things that exist. Cops exist, Tinder exists, universities exist, the ocean exists. How much Clayton is there in Moose? In any case, not everything here is pure fiction.
Or am I reading a libretto, an opera, diary prose perhaps? An epistolary novel, could be. The book contains a few letters, electronic or otherwise; the most interesting of which is from Moose to a singer. Or. Well. The Moose from before he knew Turtledove had some dates via Tinder; one of them with a woman, the mysterious J, who by now, and how much of that is real? one wonders involuntarily, would be a fairly well-known singer, now married to a woman. The letter reflects on the handful of dates that Moose and J had together and is worth reading the entire book for on its own. What to think of someone who lets a woman listen to Algiers on the second date – what a good band that is–I have them in my CD case too– —a CD that shares a title with a book by Blake Butler— —-why haven’t I finished reading Aannex after a year?—- which leads to a conversation about whether Algiers can really be called punk which leads to a conversation about whether a recording of the Apocalypse wouldn’t yield the ultimate punk record, jeez, what a fantastic second date that must have been? Moose muses about it in the letter to the woman. Closes with a very apt remark about puns: why would it be funny that something can also mean something else? It’s the easiest form of humor indeed (you don’t need any comedic talent for it yourself after all), and that puns are seen as humor at all, really gives you something to think about. So much to think about that it would be worth a (pocket) essay. So. ¡Pónk! as philosophy?
Could be too.
Or. The treatment for a documentary-like film? A psychosocial pamphlet? A book-length experimental poem?
Or just simply a devastatingly beautiful music book?
Lastly: book as music. The thunder of early Swans, the freedom of Joe McPhee, the poetry of Art Ensemble of Chicago, the unplaceability of Sun Ra, the darkness of Nordvargr/Drakh, the anarchism of You Fantastic! and the punk of ¡pónk!. And all that in a nowhere called Llanera.
