De laatste droom bevat een verzameling van twaalf stukken die zo’n zestig levensjaren omvatten. Ze weerspiegelen Almodóvars thema’s, de thema’s die ook telkens in andere vorm terugkeren in zijn cinematografische werk: de pijn en glorie die elke creatieve carrière trouw vergezellen, verlangen als de heersende wet van het leven, de vreselijke opvoeding in de duistere schooljaren bij de paters, en de drang om van elke nabije ervaring een verhaal te maken.

Deze bundeling, variërend van korte verhalen tot essays of dagboekfragmenten komt, zoals Almodóvar zelf in het voorwoord schrijft, het dichtst bij een memoir – een ‘gefragmenteerd, onvolledig en een beetje cryptisch memoir’, voegt hij er behulpzaam aan toe. Conventioneel is De laatste droom inderdaad niet, maar het biedt wel een kijkje in de gedachtewereld, de verbeeldingskracht en de obsessies van de beroemde filmmaker.

Pedro Almodóvar (25 september 1949, Calzada de Calatrava, Spanje) is de Spaanse filmregisseur, scenarioschrijver en producent met het grootste internationale bereik sinds Luis Buñuel. Hij ontving alle belangrijke internationale filmprijzen, waaronder twee Oscars, twee Golden Globes, een Gouden Leeuw, tweemaal de Cannes Film Festival prijs, zes Goya’s, en een aantal belangrijke onderscheidingen waaronder de Premio Príncipe de Asturias.
