Flaptekst boek van Niels F. Halbertsma over zijn reizen in Colombia en Panama

Cineast Niels Halbertsma maakte zijn eerste films in Zuid- en Midden-Amerika. Tijdens zijn werkzaamheden voor een oliemaatschappij in Colombia, eind jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw, raakte hij gefascineerd door de oorspronkelijke bewoners van het land. Hun leefwijze stond op een kantelpunt; weliswaar voeren ze nog met boomstamkano’s over de rivieren, maar de eerste buitenboordmotoren hadden hun intrede gedaan, en naast blaaspijp en pijl en boog gebruikten ze inmiddels ook machetes, jachtgeweren en nylon visdraad. Halbertsma besloot ontslag te nemen bij de oliemaatschappij om documentairefilms te gaan maken.

Met veertig kilo aan camera-apparatuur reisde hij per bus, zeilboot, watervliegtuig, muilezel en kano naar de afgelegen gebieden waar deze mensen woonden, om hun bestaan op film en foto vast te leggen. Dat leverde unieke beelden op van de Cuna op de San Blas-eilanden, de vissers van La Boquilla, de Emberá langs de Rio Esmeraldas, de Kogi in het hooggebergte van de Sierra Nevada en de Makuna in het Amazonewoud. In Piraparaná kijkt hij terug op deze bijzondere ontmoetingen.

Niels F. Halbertsma is geboren in 1929 te Batavia in voormalig Nederlands-Indië. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, die hij in Amsterdam meemaakte, vertrok hij voor studie naar Amerika, waarna hij zich vestigde in Colombia. In 1957 besloot hij documentairefilms te gaan maken. Behalve eigen producties maakte hij films voor de BBC, Armand Denis en Granada TV. Na zijn terugkeer naar Nederland werkte hij van 1965 tot 1974 als conservator voor het Tropenmuseum; van 1974 tot 1990 was hij directeur van het Wereld Natuur Fonds. Van zijn hand verschenen ruim dertig documentaires. Als cameraman werkte hij mee aan nog eens twintig producties.

Deventer is in 1976 in de ban van A Bridge Too Far. De gelijknamige bestseller over het geallieerde offensief Operation Market Garden wordt in de zomer van dat jaar in en rond de stad verfilmd.

Wereldsterren als Sean Connery, Michael Caine en Robert Redford melden zich langs de IJssel. In de lokale krant verschijnen oproepen voor figuranten en met producent Joseph E. Levine is onderhandeld dat zijn crew alle benodigdheden afneemt bij plaatselijke winkeliers. In ruil daarvoor staat Deventer in dienst van zijn film.

De Wilhelminabrug wordt zelfs afgesloten en in brand gestoken. De opnames van A Bridge Too Far raken in 1976 vrijwel alle Deventenaren en vormen een bijzonder hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van de stad. Een halve eeuw later hebben verhalenmakers van erfgoedorganisatie Deventer Verhaal unieke herinneringen over de filmopnames vastgelegd. Onder leiding van journalist René van der Meer zijn interviews en historische verhalen gebundeld in het boek dat wordt uitgegeven in samenwerking Deventer verhaal en Museum De Waag.
