Flaptekst van het boek over de geschiedenis van de pub in Ierland

Dive into the captivating journey of Irish pubs from humble 17th-century taverns to today’s global phenomena. This comprehensive study offers a unique exploration of their cultural impact, evolution, and future – a must-read for all history and culture enthusiasts.

Immerse yourself in the rich history and cultural significance of the Irish pub, from its humble beginnings in the 17th century to its modern incarnation as a global phenomenon. This book offers a comprehensive examination of the Irish pub, from experts in multiple disciplines – history, sociology, architecture, interior design, psychology, literature, music, performing arts, business and more – exploring the intricate tapestry of the Irish pub.

From its evolution and the myriad forces shaping it, the book takes you on a journey from the taverns, inns, and alehouses of the 17th and 18th centuries, through the commercialisation of the drinks industry, to the modern pubs of today. It investigates the active human engagement behind the creation and evolution of the Irish pub, challenging the notion of a static ’traditional’ pub and emphasising its dynamism and diversity. This book also uncovers the under-examined aspects of Ireland’s history, such as gender, migration, and multiculturalism, in the context of its pub culture. It examines the Irish pub’s role as a community resource, a literary phenomenon, a social driver, and a global commodity. It also speculates about the future of the Irish pub and advocates for its re-invention as a more inclusive and creative space.

This is the first full-length academic treatment of the Irish pub phenomenon, offering a profound understanding of its historic, literary, political, business, sociological, and psychological dimensions. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Irish culture, pub culture, or the complex interplay between social space and cultural identity. Whether you’re a scholar of cultural studies, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys a good pint, this book will provide you with a deeper appreciation of the Irish pub and its place in society. Find out why preserving these institutions is essential for the future of Irish cultural heritage.

Flaptekst van het boek over de geschiedenis van Ulster

A shortened version of Jonathan Bardon’s definitive tome, A History of Ulster, this book provides a comprehensive account of the province from the earliest settlements nine thousand years ago to the turmoil of the Troubles, and the fragile peace period that followed. A preface from the author includes the peace process that saw the region emerge from thirty years of brutal conflict.

Covering social, political and economic life in the province, the book explores the Viking and Norman invasions, the plantations and the Penal Laws, the rise of the United Irishmen and Orangeism, the Act of Union, emigration and the Great Famine, the linen industry and shipbuilding, and the Home Rule Crisis and partition, right through to civil rights, the turmoil of the Troubles and the period of peace that has followed.

Lavishly illustrated throughout, this accessible edition takes its place alongside Jonathan Bardon’s hugely popular A History of Ireland in 100 Episodes.

Dr Jonathan Bardon was born in Dbulin in 1941. He is a former lecturer at Queens University, Belfast, was the author of numerous works of Irish historiography. In 2002, he was awarded an OBE for his ‘services to community life’ in Northern Ireland. Jonathan died 21 April 2020 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, aged 78.

Flaptekst van het boek van David McCullagh

The crown was the symbol of British power in Ireland, and in December 1921 opponents of the Anglo-Irish Treaty claimed that its terms tied Ireland to the Crown forever. The new Irish Free State would be within the British Commonwealth, with limited sovereignty. And some believed it would stay that way if the Treaty was accepted.

And yet, within 16 years, Ireland had become a republic. A dozen years after that, it acquired the name as well and removed any ambiguity about its constitutional status by formally leaving the Commonwealth. And all without the firing of a shot.

This peaceful revolution had been achieved by a succession of governments of different parties and a cast of characters that included a monarch prepared to surrender his throne for love; a British prime minister who made Irish neutrality possible and another who did his best to bully or bribe Ireland into World War II. What had seemed impossible in 1921 had been achieved through relentless pressure, considerable skill and no small amount of luck. This is the story of how it happened.

David McCullagh was born on 1 December 1967. He is a journalist, author and presenter with RTÉ, where he has presented the Six One News since 2020. He previously presented current affairs television programme Prime Time and was political correspondent with RTÉ News. He is the author of a biography of John A. Costello and a two-volume biography of Éamon de Valera.

Flaptekst van het boek over de Ierse Revolutie

Discover how Irish revolutionaries transformed their independence struggle into a global diplomatic campaign (1919-1923). Through innovative public diplomacy and diaspora mobilisation, they developed strategies for small nations to influence world affairs. This pioneering study locates the struggle within the context of post-war settlements as Irish republicans sought to shape international relations.

It is often forgotten that leaders of the Irish Revolution considered the domestic and international campaigns for Irish independence to be organically linked. Focusing on this dimension can relocate the Irish struggle in its original and fullest context.

This collection of essays follows the activities of Irish envoys abroad over four years as they defended the right of Dáil Éireann to self-determination and lobbied for its recognition in the capitals of Europe and the British Commonwealth, as well as in the United States. The global impact of Terence MacSwiney’s hunger strike protest is highlighted, as well as the important role played by Catholic networks, disapora activists and women volunteers.

By reconsidering its international dimension, this book locates the Irish Revolution within an appropriate background of post-war settlements that were not only contested but also remained comparatively fluid. Cultural repercussions of the Irish struggle are also examined at a time of growing international debate about small, emergent states and the existence of contested state boundaries arising from the upending of the old international order caused by the First World War.
