Arnoud van Eijndhouts werd geboren in 1510 in het Brabantse Aarle-Rixtel. Waar in die tijd weinigen verder kwamen dan hun eigen dorp of stad, vestigde Arnoud zich na vele omzwervingen in Bologna. Als Arlenius zou hij uitgroeien tot een sleutelfiguur in de Italiaanse boekenwereld. Hij specialiseerde zich in het uitgeven van klassieke Griekse en Romeinse manuscripten en tijdgenoten roemden hem als een man met een indrukwekkende talenkennis, die zich met toewijding inzette voor de wetenschap.

Na zijn dood raakte Arlenius in de vergetelheid. In deze meeslepende biografie wekt dorpsgenoot Wim Daniëls hem weer tot leven. In De boekhandelaar van Bologna verhaalt Daniëls niet alleen over deze intrigerende figuur, maar toont hij op fascinerende wijze het zestiende- eeuwse Brabant, Nederland en Europa.

Wim Daniëls is op 11 oktober 1954 geboren in Aarle-Rixtel, Noord-Brabant. Hij is onder meer bekend als taalkundige en schrijver. Hij staat daarnaast in de Nederlandse theaters met theatercolleges en cabaretvoorstellingen. Verder presenteert hij tv-programma’s voor Omroep Max: Nederland op film en samen met Huub Stapel Het dorp, dat gebaseerd is op zijn gelijknamige boek. Zijn meest recente boeken zijn De verloren tijd – over hoe het vroeger was – en de taalboeken De Dunne Daniëls en De Dikke Daniëls.

Diodoros, een op Sicilië geboren Griek, begon in de eerste eeuw voor Christus aan een immens project: een wereldgeschiedenis schrijven van het begin van de wereld tot aan zijn eigen tijd. Dat kostte hem dertig jaar van zijn leven en leverde veertig boeken op. Uit de vijftien die daarvan zijn overgeleverd heeft classicus John Nagelkerken er vier gekozen voor deze vertaling. Een boek over Egypte, waar Diodoros enige jaren geleefd en rondgereisd heeft, en drie boeken over de Griekse wereld in de vijfde eeuw, met speciale aandacht voor zijn geboortestreek Sicilië, dat samen met Zuid-Italië ook wel bekendstaat als Groot Griekenland. Hij vult daarmee het gat in de geschiedenis dat bestaat tussen het werk van Herodotus en dat van Thucydides.

Het werk is strikt chronologisch ingedeeld en voor een historicus uit zijn tijd heel nauwkeurig en gedetailleerd. De periode uit de geschiedenis waarover Diodoros schrijft is spectaculair. Zijn boeken over Griekenland vormden een belangrijke bron voor Ilja Leonard Pfeijffers roman Alkibiades.

Diodoros van Sicilië (Διόδωρος Σικελιώτης) werd circa 90 v.Chr. geboren in het huidige Agira op Sicilië. Hij was een Griekse historicus waarvan slechts een werk, Βιβλιοθήκη Ἱστορική (De Historische Bibliotheek) bekend is. Tegenwoordig wordt van onschatbare betekenis geacht voor een goed begrip van de laatste weken van Alexander de Grote, van Babylon en van de Romeinse magistraten. Hij overleed circa 30 v.Chr.

Recensie van de redactie

Samen met zijn vrouw had Fik Meijer bedacht om nog een lange reis te maken langs belandrijke oudheidkundige plekken rondom en in de Middellandse Zee die belangrijk waren in zijn carriere als historicus en in zijn leven. Maar een paar dagen voordat ze zouden vertrekken sloeg het noodlot toe. De vrouw van Fik Meijer kreeg een hersenbloeding die haar een paar dagen later fataal werd. Dat de reis niet doorging was dan ook niet meer dan logisch.

Echter na een jaar of wat stimuleerde zijn kinderen hem toch om alsnog de reis te gaan maken. Alhoewel Meijer zich realiseerde dat de reis niet hetzelfde als met zijn vrouw, liet hij zich uiteindelijk tocht overhalen. Hij maakte uiteindelijk een aantal reizen naar locaties in er rond de Middellandse Zee die voor hem persoonlijk belangrijk zijn en ook voor de geschiedenis van de beschavingen van de klassieke oudheid.

Deze reizen leverden een prachtig boek op. Niet alleen is Fik Meijer een begenadigd historische verteller, in dit boek is hij persoonlijker dan ooit. Hij haalt herinneringen op de ervaringen die hij opdeed tijdens zijn vele reizen die hij vanaf zijn twintigste maakte naar allerlei bijzondere plekken aan de Middellandse zee. Enigszins melancholisch stemmend, maar nergens sentimenteel vertelt hij over zijn eigen belevenissen. Dat hij dit bovendien weet te koppelen aan vele bijzondere historische wetenswaardigheden maakt het boek nog beter. En dan klinkt ook nog op een zeer fijne manier de liefde die hij had en heeft voor zijn overleden vrouw op subtiele wijze door.

Aangekondigd als zijn laatste boek, alhoewel hij daar inmiddels zelf gelukkig weer aan twijfelt, Thalassa, zonder twijfel het meest persoonlijke boek van een begenadigd schrijver en historicus en een fijn vakantieboek. Gewaardeerd met ∗∗∗∗∗ (uitstekend).

Al meer dan zestig jaar bestudeert Fik Meijer in, op en langs de Middellandse Zee de geschiedenis van de Grieken en Romeinen. In Thalassa neemt hij de lezer mee op zijn afscheidsreis langs dertig lieux de mémoire, in overgrote meerderheid plaatsen die tot nu toe redelijk onbekend zijn, maar die gezamenlijk wel het bijzondere verhaal over de zee vertellen. Ze variëren van Romeinse wrakken op de zeebodem, die in zijn jeugdige jaren grote indruk op hem maakten, tot plaatsen waar de mechanismen van de oude economie of politiek een gezicht krijgen of oorlogsschepen iets van hun geheimen prijsgeven. Ook probeert Meijer erachter te komen welke rol de zee speelde in het dagelijks leven. Zo toont Thalassa zich in vele gedaanten.

Fik Meijer is geboren op 12 augustus 1942 in Leiden. Claude Traunecker was born in 1943 in Mulhouse, France. He is one of the world’s foremost authorities on ancient Egyptian religion, is Professor Emeritus of Egyptology at the University of Strasbourg. He is the author of Coptos and coauthor of Karnak.

Patrick De Rynck is geboren op 15 maart 1963 in Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen. Hij is classicus, auteur, vertaler, recensent, bloemlezer en (eind)redacteur. Hij werkt voor verschillende musea, waaronder het Gallo-Romeins museum in Tongeren, en beheert de populaire website Hic et Nunc, waar hij samen met tientallen gastauteurs de actualiteit duidt vanuit de oudheid. De Rynck won in 2024 als eerste Vlaming de Oikos Publieksprijs voor zijn inzet om de oudheid bij een groot publiek te brengen.
