Taiwan heeft vele bezetters gekend. De Portugezen hebben er gezeten en daarna de VOC, het heeft lang bij China gehoord en vervolgens bij Japan, om na de Tweede Wereldoorlog verstrikt te raken in de Chinese Burgeroorlog, wat uitliep op een militaire dictatuur die tot ver in de jaren tachtig zou duren. De afgelopen decennia heeft het eiland zich opgewerkt tot een goed functionerende democratie en een onmisbare technologische supermacht.

Maar de onafhankelijkheid van Taiwan wordt al decennia betwist door China. President Xi Jinping houdt niet op te verkondigen dat het eiland een afvallige provincie is, geregeerd door ‘seperatisten’. Weinigen twijfelen eraan dat hij in de nabije toekomst zal proberen Taiwan in te lijven.

Hoe zullen de VS en de EU, maar ook de Europese landen afzonderlijk, reageren op een Chinese poging tot annexatie van Taiwan? David Holloway traces how these weapons shaped the last century, from the US-Soviet arms race to the rivalry between India and Pakistan. David Holloway is Raymond A. Spruance Professor of International History Emeritus at Stanford University. He has written widely on the history of nuclear weapons and is the author of Stalin and the Bomb: The Soviet Union and Atomic Energy, 1939–1956.
