Breadfruit trees are staples of the tropics, bearing cantaloupe-sized green-skinned fruits whose taste and texture resemble potatoes. More than three thousand years ago, breadfruit fueled the Pacific voyages of discovery that settled islands throughout Oceania. In the late eighteenth century, the British expedition that ended with the mutiny on the Bounty aimed, but failed, to introduce breadfruit to the West Indies as food for enslaved African laborers on sugar plantations. A later voyage resulted in the fruit’s widespread distribution and complicated role within modern Caribbean food cultures. In recent years, breadfruit has been touted as a tool for sustainable development and as a “superfood” with both health benefits and culinary versatility.

Russell Fielding tells these stories and many others, exploring breadfruit’s fascinating global history and varied present-day uses. Bringing together extensive research and vivid travelogues, including learning directly from local agriculturists, chefs, scientists, and holders of traditional knowledge, he provides an immersive narrative of breadfruit’s contributions. Fielding argues that breadfruit’s history comprises two journeys: first, from its origins in Southeast Asia across the Pacific; and second, its transplantation to the Caribbean. Today, a third journey is taking place, one that is spreading breadfruit throughout the world.

Engagingly written and compellingly argued, this book draws timely lessons from breadfruit’s past to forecast its future potential.

Russell Fielding is an associate professor in the HTC Honors College at Coastal Carolina University. He is a geographer who studies sustainable food systems in the world’s coastal and island settings. Fielding is the author of The Wake of the Whale: Hunter Societies in the Caribbean and North Atlantic (2018).

East Cork was a very dangerous area during the Irish War of Independence. Several major and minor actions between the IRA and Crown Forces took place there during 1920 and 1921, including the first RIC Barracks to be captured and destroyed at Carrigtwohill. Other significant events include the capture of Castlemartyr and Cloyne RIC barracks, the ambush at Mile Bush near Midleton where a British Army bicycle patrol was relieved of their weapons, and the IRA ambush of an RIC foot patrol in Midleton. This period also saw the first official reprisals, the disastrous battle at Clonmult, the Cobh quarry attack, and the Bunker Hill ambush.

This book includes all the major and minor engagements between the IRA and Crown Forces; the actions described have never before been so extensively researched and published in such a comprehensive and balanced fashion.

Coen Verbraak is geboren op 14 augustus 1965 in Amsterdam. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de meest spraakmakende interviewers van Nederland. Hij publiceerde meerdere boeken, waaronder Oorlogskinderen (2020), De Molukkers (2021) en Israël (2024). Zijn tv-serie Kijken in de Ziel werd bekroond met de Zilveren Nipkowschijf en de Sonja Barend Award. Recentelijk maakte hij onder meer de series Over leven en Onze jongens op Java, die werd bekroond met De Tegel, en Praten met de Nachtwacht, een film onder regie van Theu Boermans.

Like many modern people, saving enough to buy land or start a business was a slow, precarious slog. Bowes shows how these economies of survival were shared by a wide swath of the populace, blurring the lines between genders, ages, and legal status.

De inlichtingendiensten en Suriname. Ook na de onafhankelijkheid van Suriname in 1975 was de Nederlandse belangstelling voor de voormalige kolonie groot. Na de coup van Desi Bouterse in 1980 maakten de Nederlandse militaire inlichtingendiensten plannen om in te grijpen, al dan niet met internationale steun. Er ontstonden daarnaast particuliere initiatieven om het militaire bewind een halt toe te roepen.

Vijftig jaar na dato is het Bob de Graaff gelukt de beoogde interventiepogingen in kaart te brengen. Dankzij een unieke toegang tot de archieven van de Militaire Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (MIVD) kreeg hij ook boven tafel waarom er uiteindelijk niet werd ingegrepen. Doorslaggevend hierbij waren de verschillen van opvatting tussen de regeringen in Washington en Den Haag, het gebrek aan eensgezindheid bij de Nederlandse regeringspartijen en uiteenlopende visies van de betrokken ministeries.

Nieuwe inzichten in een beladen periode. In Coups, tegencoups en constitutie geeft Bob de Graaff een nieuwe kijk op het Nederlands beleid ten aanzien van Suriname na 1975, inclusief de bemoeienissen met het Junglecommando van Ronnie Brunswijk en de pogingen om Bouterse veroordeeld te krijgen wegens zijn betrokkenheid bij drugshandel. Met zijn genuanceerde beschrijving van de vrijwel steeds gestrande interventieplannen biedt hij een tegenwicht tegen allerlei complottheorieën over een heimelijk opererende neokoloniale Nederlandse overheid.

Prof. dr. Bob de Graaff is hoogleraar Intelligence en Security Studies bij de afdeling Geschiedenis van Internationale Betrekkingen aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Van 2005 tot 2010 was hij al verbonden aan de faculteit Geesteswetenschappen als bijzonder hoogleraar Politieke en culturele reconstructie vanuit humanistisch perspectief, op een leerstoel die in het leven is geroepen door de Stichting Socrates. Van 2007 tot 2009 was hij Nederlands eerste hoogleraar Terrorisme en contraterrorisme aan de Campus Den Haag van de Universiteit Leiden. Tussen 2010 en 2017 combineerde Bob de Graaff zijn professoraat in Utrecht met een hoogleraarschap met dezelfde leeropdracht aan de Nederlandse Defensieacademie (NLDA) in Breda. Hij was in 1991 een van de oprichters van de Stichting Inlichtingen Studies in Nederland (NISA) en sinds 2015 is hij voorzitter van de Europese afdeling van de International Association for Intelligence Education (IAFIE). De Graaff was redacteur van Handbook of European Intelligence Cultures (samen met James Nyce) en samen met Cees Wiebes schreef hij Villa Maarheeze. De geschiedenis van de inlichtingendienst buitenland.

Moonyoung Hong is Assistant Professor in the School of English at the University of Hong Kong. She obtained her MPhil in Irish Writing and PhD in English at Trinity College Dublin. She is author of Tom Murphy’s Theatre of Everyday Space (Routledge, 2025) and has published in Irish Studies Review, Comparative Drama, Études Irlandaises, and Review of Irish Studies in Europe (RISE). She is on the executive committee for the Irish Society for Theatre Research (ISTR).

Perry Share is Head of School of Business and Social Sciences at Atlantic Technological University. He is a sociologist with a broad range of interests, from technology to education to food and eating. He is co-author of A sociology of Ireland and of a number of publications in the sociology of food and drink. He is an Editorial Board member of the European Journal of Food, Drink and Society and was formerly external examiner on the MA in Gastronomy and Food Studies, Technological University Dublin.
