Tijdens de stille dagen van de pandemie bezoekt Sara Baume een expositie in een gerenoveerde schuur in West Cork. Een van de schilderijen raakt haar zo dat ze besluit contact te zoeken met de kunstenaar. Mollie Douthit blijkt een balling uit North-Dakota die in haar eentje woont en werkt in een blokhut aan de ruige kust van Ierland. Mollie en Sara voelen meteen een diepe verwantschap: ze delen een liefde voor de natuur en een bijna religieuze toewijding aan hun kunst. Al snel ontmoeten ze elkaar elke maand om samen te zwemmen in de ijskoude Atlantische Oceaan. Maar als Mollies leven in moeilijk vaarwater komt, tekenen zich ook de verschillen af.

In haar kenmerkende kraakheldere stijl zoomt Baume scherp in op complexe onderwerpen als gemeenschap en nationaliteit, neurose en mystiek, liefde en pijn. Bovenal is De opening een sprankelend onderzoek naar de helende kracht van kunst en literatuur, en een ode aan de vriendschap wanneer het noodlot onverbiddelijk de werkelijkheid binnendringt.

Sara Baume is geboren in 1984. Ze heeft een Ierse moeder en een Engelse vader. Met haar debuutroman Stommelen stampen slaan won de Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize en werd in vele landen vertaald. Voor haar werk kreeg ze de Davy Byrnes Short Story Award, de Hennessy New Irish Writing Award, de Rooney Prize en de Irish Book Award. In 2023 verschenen Handwerk (shortlist van de Rathbones Folio Prize) en Weken maanden jaren, dat op de longlist van de Europese Literatuurprijs stond. Ze woont in West Cork, waar ze werkt als visueel kunstenaar en als schrijver.

East Cork was a very dangerous area during the Irish War of Independence. Several major and minor actions between the IRA and Crown Forces took place there during 1920 and 1921, including the first RIC Barracks to be captured and destroyed at Carrigtwohill. Other significant events include the capture of Castlemartyr and Cloyne RIC barracks, the ambush at Mile Bush near Midleton where a British Army bicycle patrol was relieved of their weapons, and the IRA ambush of an RIC foot patrol in Midleton. This period also saw the first official reprisals, the disastrous battle at Clonmult, the Cobh quarry attack, and the Bunker Hill ambush.

This book includes all the major and minor engagements between the IRA and Crown Forces; the actions described have never before been so extensively researched and published in such a comprehensive and balanced fashion.
