Charles Spencer is geboren op 20 september 1962 in Londen. Hij auteur, historicus, gastspreker en journalist. Hij is ook de negende graaf Spencer. Hij heeft negen boeken geschreven, waaronder vier Sunday Times-bestsellers. Spencer is een internationaal geziene gastspreker en werkte van 1986 tot 1995 als radiocorrespondent voor NBC News. Hij was presentator voor History Channel, copresentator van de succesvolle podcast Rabbit Hole Detectives en heeft voor vele kranten en tijdschriften geschreven. Hij is columnist voor de Financial Times. Spencer werd opgeleid aan Eton College en Magdalen College in Oxford, waar hij een master in moderne geschiedenis behaalde. Hij is lid van de Royal Historical Society en van de Society of Antiquaries en is de jongere broer van Diana, prinses van Wales.
