Dankzij een betere bescherming komt de das (Meles meles) weer in een groot deel van Nederland voor. Door het huidige ‘gevecht om de ruimte’ staat het leefgebied van deze dieren hier en daar echter flink onder druk. Informatie over hun leefwijze en de wettelijke verplichtingen bij een dreigend verlies van hun leefgebied, is vaak gedateerd, gekleurd, ambivalent of te weinig deskundig.

‘Dassen’ is een uitgebreid kennisdocument over de das. Het gaat in op de wettelijke bescherming van dassen, hun leefwijze en behoeften en de bedreigingen waaraan deze dieren in Nederland blootstaan. Jaap Schröder is geboren in 1957. Hij was in zijn werkzame leven landbouwkundige bij Wageningen Universiteit & Research. Daarna stortte hij zich op een oude hobby: veld- en literatuuronderzoek aan dassen en, in verband daarmee, de bodemkwaliteit van de Veluwe, waar hij momenteel woont. Vanuit de Stichting Valouwe Natuur adviseert en publiceert hij over dassenbescherming en treedt hij op in rechtszittingen als deskundige of als zelfstandige partij.

Ton Meijer is geboren in 1958. Hij is bioloog, gespecialiseerd in ecosystemen en populaties. Vanaf 2001 onderzocht hij vele honderden uren het terreingebruik van de das. Voor de Stichting Dassenwerkgroep Utrecht & ’t Gooi toetste Ton ruimtelijke plannen aan de wet en voerde daarover het woord voor natuurclubs in hoor- en rechtszittingen. In zijn jeugd werd het zaadje voor natuurliefde geplant door zijn ouders Corrie en Gert.

Pooley tells the story of the okapi’s “discovery” in 1900 by British naturalist Sir Harry Johnston, as well as the overlooked contributions of the Indigenous African people whose expertise made this sighting and subsequent hunt for specimens possible. The book traces how colonial politics and scientific racism shaped early accounts of the animal’s study and examines the enduring biases that continue to influence conservation efforts today. The okapi became a symbol of scientific curiosity, colonial power, and conservation challenges, revealing complex intersections among biodiversity, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship. Its precarious existence in captivity and the wild exposes how Western and Indigenous approaches to conservation can—and must—find common ground for its survival.

Simon Pooley is the Lambert Lecturer in Environment at Birkbeck, University of London. He is the coeditor of Histories of Bioinvasions in the Mediterraneanand the author of Burning Table Mountain: An Environmental History of Fire on the Cape Peninsula.
