De Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog duurde van 12 april 1861 – 9 april 1865. Het was de strijd tussen de Noordelijke Staten (de Unie) ofwel de Noorderlingen en de Zuidelijke Staten (de Confederatie) ofwel de Zuiderlingen die bloedig was en vele slachtoffers aan beide kanten eiste. Met de overgave van de zuidelijke generaal Lee op 9 april 1965 aan de bevelhebber Grant van de Noordelingen in bij Appotomatix Courthouse in Virginia, kwam er een einde aan de bloedige burgeroorlog waarvan de effecten tot op de dag van vandaag voelbaar zijn in de Verenigde Staten. Weaving together history, political economy, and radical abolitionism, McNally demonstrates that plantation slaves formed a modern working class. Unlike those scholars who insist that enslaved people were too sensible to set their sights on liberty, he highlights the self-activity of enslaved people fighting for their freedom and reframes their resistance as labor struggles over production and reproduction, with significant implications for US and Atlantic history and for understanding the roots of racial capitalism.

David McNally is Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston, where he directs the Project on Race and Capitalism. He is the author of seven previous books and more than sixty scholarly articles.

Johnston’s reputation as a master tactician was widely recognized, even by his adversaries. Renowned British war correspondent Sir William Howard Russell lauded him in 1861 as the Confederacy’s finest strategist. Years later, Union General Ulysses S. Grant conceded that Johnston caused him more anxiety than any other Southern commander, stating, “Take it all in all, the South, in my opinion, had no better soldier than Joe Johnston—none at least that gave me more trouble.”

Despite his genius, Johnston’s career was marred by his fraught relationship with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis was critical of Johnston and his meddling undermined Johnston’s strategies and weakened the Southern war effort. As noted by his contemporary, General James Longstreet, Johnston’s talents for army command and campaign management were unparalleled, but he was denied the opportunities afforded to others. This book argues that with proper support and alignment of leadership, Johnston’s innovative strategies might have altered the course of the war.

A definitive account of the formation and operation of the segregated all black US squadrons which served in the Second World War.

The Tuskegee airmen as they came to be called took their name from Tuskegee Institute (now University) where they were educated, which was located near Tuskegee Alabama. Many of these first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces came from states where blacks were still subject to the Jim Crow Laws. The American military was racially segregated, as was much of the federal government and the Tuskegee Airmen were frequently subjected to discrimination, both within and outside of the army.

The book goes into much detail on decisions made and not made at the highest military and civilian levels in wartime Washington as to the founding, use and value of a racially-segregated all-Black fighter squadrons. In the end, a decision had to be between a Black squadron or no Black squadron at all. The resultant 99th Fighter Squadron and the follow-on 100th, 201st and 203rd squadrons were decisive in opening the way for full US military integration a full decade before America’s civilian society began to go the same way.

This account of these squadrons examines the background to their formation, their training and operations in theatre. The book is based on interviews with many of the Tuskegee Airmen themselves. This is supported by research in USAF archives. The work deals not just with the pilots and their warplanes in battle but also with their everyday life on air bases in the segregated Deep South and in the field in wartime Italy.

Stanley Sandler is a retired military historian who has taught at the college and university level in the U.S. and Canada. He has published numerous peer-reviewed books and articles on military, naval and air power history. His last active history position was as Assistant Command Historian at the U.S. Army Special Warfare Center and School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He holds the B.A. (Houghton College) the M.A. (Columbia University) and the Ph. D. (Kings College, London University) where he studied under Sir Michael Howard.

He foresaw a “new kind of war,” one that hinged on efforts at home. Launching Liberty tells the remarkable story of how FDR partnered with private businessmen to begin the production of cargo freighters longer than a football field—ships he affectionately dubbed “ugly ducklings.” These colossal Liberty Ships took over six months to build at the start of his $350 million emergency shipbuilding program, far too long. The government turned to Henry Kaiser, the man who had delivered the Boulder Dam ahead of schedule and under budget, but had never built a ship in his life. Kaiser established a network of shipyards from coast to coast and recruited tens of thousands of workers eager to contribute to the war effort. Many, particularly African Americans and women, traveled from some of the most downtrodden, rural parts of the nation to help their country and to find a better life of greater equality.

As German U-boats maintained their pace of attack, Roosevelt and Kaiser initiated a bold, nationwide competition among shipyards to see who could construct ships the fastest. Driven by duty and the thrill of innovation, workers reduced the shipbuilding timeline from months to weeks and then to days. Launching Liberty is a tapestry of voices reflecting the diverse American experience of World War II. From the halls of the White House to the cramped quarters of half-finished cargo ships, we hear from naval architects, welders, nurses, engineers, daycare providers, and mothers balancing family life with the demands of wartime economy. Doug Most was born in 1968 in Boston and is a native of Rhode Island, is a lifelong journalist and author whose career has spanned newspapers, magazines, and universities up and down the East Coast, with stops in Washington, DC; South Carolina; New Jersey; and Boston. He was named Journalist of the Year while at The Record in Bergen County, New Jersey, for his coverage of a tragic story about two teens charged with killing their newborn, a story he turned into a true-crime book titled Always in Our Hearts. After a stint at Boston Magazine, he worked for fifteen years at The Boston Globe, as the Sunday Magazine editor, and deputy managing editor/special projects. His articles have appeared in Best American Sports Writing and Best American Crime Writing. His 2014 nonfiction book, The Race Underground, told the story about the birth of subways in America, in the late 1800s and was adapted into a PBS/American Experience documentary. The New York Times called the book “a sweeping narrative of late-19th-century intrigue.” He works now as the executive editor and an assistant vice president at Boston University. He holds a BA from George Washington University in political communication.
