Dan Jones is geboren op 27 juli 1981 in Reading, Engeland. Hij is een Britse historicus, bestsellerauteur en televisie- en podcastmaker. Hij brak internationaal door met zijn boek over de Tempeliers. Hij is schrijver en presentator van de Netflix-serie Secrets of great British Castles. Zijn populaire podcast heet This is history.

When Viking armies first over-wintered in England, they opened a century of conflict and ambition. In Norway, Harald Fairhair rose from a regional chieftain to become its first king, while in England Alfred the Great preserved Wessex from conquest and laid the foundations for unity. His successors, Edward the Elder and Athelstan, extended that vision, leading to the creation of a single English kingdom after Athelstan’s decisive victory at Brunanburh in 937.

Meanwhile, Harald’s heirs struggled for Norway. Eric Bloodaxe briefly claimed the crown before being overthrown by his brother Hakon, fostered at Athelstan’s court. Exiled to Britain, Eric ruled in York until his violent death in 954, ending Norse kingship in England.

This is the turbulent century when kings rose and fell, and when England and Norway first took shape amid rivalry, warfare and shifting alliances.

R.A.J. Waddingham is a retired consulting actuary and an Honorary Fellow of Royal Holloway, University of London. He was awarded a CBE in the Birthday Honours of 2012 for services to pensions. In 2019 he completed a Graduate Certificate in Historical Research, with merit, at Birkbeck, University of London.

A new study of a critical period in the history of the British Army.

The last half century has seen society, technology, the character of conflict and the British Army itself all change greatly. From a low point in the 1970s, the Army’s war fighting capability increased in the 1980s in the face of a prospective war with the Soviet Union. This capability was then tested on operations from Kuwait in 1991 through to Afghanistan in 2001 and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

There followed two decades of descent from this high plateau of military achievement. Mistakes made in Iraq and Afghanistan led to a decline in support for military deployments. Cuts to defence funding and botched equipment procurements also meant the British Army of 2021 was only half the size of that of 1970, and with much key fighting equipment either obsolete or approaching obsolescence.

Ben Barry served in the Army from 1975 to 2010, often in key staff appointments, and has worked closely with the Army in the following decade. This new study draws not only on his personal experience, but also on a very wide range of written sources complemented by interviews to provide a new interpretation of this period that challenges the existing narratives.

Ben Barry was commissioned into the Light Infantry and later commanded its second battalion. He is now Senior Fellow for Land Warfare in the International Institute for Strategic Studies and a visiting professor at the Department of War Studies, Kings College London. He is the author of Blood, Metal and Dust: How Victory Turned into Defeat in Afghanistan and Iraq (Osprey), which was shortlisted for The Duke of Wellington Medal for Military History 2021, the British Army Book of the Year 2021, a finalist for the 2020 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award and awarded First Runner Up in the Templer Medal Book Prize 2021.

Het megalithisch monument Stonehenge uit de Jonge Steentijd dat te vinden is in de buurt van het stadje Amsbury in het graafschap Wiltshire in Engeland, houdt de gemoederen als honderden jaren bezig. Rond 2300 voor Christus is het monument gebouwd. Dat is volgende de nieuwste dateringen zo’n 300 jaar later dan eerder werd aangenomen. Het cirkelvormige monument van rechtopstaande stenen is zonder twijfel een van de beroemdste prehistorische bouwwerken ter wereld. Er doen de wildste speculaties de ronde over hoe het monument gebouwd is en waarvoor het diende. Wat in ieder geval inmiddels wel duidelijk is dat Stonhenge niet in een keer is gebouwd. De oudste resten van paalkuilen die gevonden zijn in de buurt van de parkeerplaats stammen uit ongeveer 8000 v.Chr. en de drie cirkels  van stenen die nu nog gedeeltelijk rechtop staan stammen respectievelijk ongeveer 3100 v.Chr., 3000 v.Chr. en 2600-2400 v.Chr. Na diepgaand onderzoek vermoeden archeologen trouwens dat de stenen van Stonehenge eerder in Wales hebben gestaan. Stonehenge is erkend als Unesco Werelderfgoed sinds 1986.

Between 1979 and 2007 Britain had just three heads of government: Margaret Thatcher (1979–90), John Major (1990–97) and Tony Blair (1997–2007). Over the next 17 years six politicians followed them in and out of Downing Street.

This book, which straddles more than 30 years of prime ministerial misadventures, poses questions about the underlying factors as well as the specific circumstances for individual departures.
