Joodse musici als Wanda Landowska, Shony Braun en Arthur Rubinstein maakten tijdens het interbellum furore in Duitsland en Europa. Niet veel later werden ze door de nazi’s meedogenloos vervolgd, met als doel om de Joodse invloed op de Europese muziek voor eens en altijd uit te wissen. Gestolen muziek vertelt het verhaal van de jacht op Europa’s muzikale erfgoed: van de ontvreemding van kostbare manuscripten van Beethoven en Bach tot de verbranding van unieke instrumenten. De systematische roof en vernietiging van muzikaal erfgoed raakte de Joodse gemeenschap in het hart, maar maakte van muziek ook een bijzonder krachtige vorm van verzet. Journalist and author Jane Eisner places King’s life in historical and cultural context, revealing details of her humble beginnings in Jewish Brooklyn, the roots of her musical genius, her four marriages, and her anguish about public life. Jane Eisner is born on 31 December 1955. She is a widely published journalist who held leadership positions at the Philadelphia Inquirer and The Forward. She is the author of Taking Back the Vote. Eisner lives in New York City.

Funkmuziek is een van de muziekgenres die aan het begin van de jaren zestig vorige eeuw is opgekomen en tot op de dag van vandaag populair is gebleven, zij het wel in een niche. Vaak wordt James Brown als de uitvinder van het genre gezien dat zich kenmerkt door een zeer ritmisch staccato geheel met dominante percussie, baslijnen, prominente gitaren en scherpe blaasinstrumenten. Het hoogtepunt van de funk ligt in de jaren zeventig met bands als Parliament-Funkadelic, Ohio Players, Bootsy’s Rubberband en The Isley Brothers. Bovendien waren er een aantal solo-artiesten als Betty Davis, de jonge Chaka Khan (met Rufus) belangrijk. In de moderne hiphop en rap worden vaak samples gebruikt uit de funkmuziek wat zeker heeft geleid tot een herwaardering en gestegen populariteit van de funkmuziek.

Sallie Martin combined fame as a performer with a far-sighted business acumen that brought Black gospel music to a national audience and laid the foundation for the industry that followed. Kay Norton’s biography follows Martin’s parallel careers from her early plans to grow the genre through her celebrity in the 1960s–1970s and eventful retirement.

“Same old Sallie Martin, same old Jesus,” she once told audiences, a reflection of both her musical style and unapologetic approach to life. Cofounder of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, Martin also co-established the pioneering Black music publisher Martin and Morris Music Studio. Her group the Sallie Martin Singers took Chicago gospel to all points of the compass and Martin mentored and employed dozens of aspiring vocalists and instrumentalists. Norton looks at Martin’s important relationships and the challenges she faced, while placing her accomplishments and legacy on the arc of gospel music history.

Parliament-Funkadelic is perhaps the greatest funk band ever assembled. Yet at the time of the group’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, none of the women who helped create the sound and performed in P-Funk were invited to the ceremony and their contributions have been largely overlooked.

Mothership Connected tells the story of Mallia Franklin, Lynn Mabry, Dawn Silva, Debbie Wright, and Shirley Hayden, all of whom were instrumental in making Parliament-Funkadelic, as well as the spin-off groups Parlet and the Brides of Funkenstein, into the legends they are today. Assembled by Seth Neblett, son of the “Queen of Funk” Mallia Franklin, and filled with the voices of funk icons like George Clinton, Sly Stone, Bootsy Collins, and the women themselves, this oral history makes clear why these “architects” at the “core” of P-Funk were both essential—and erased. From Franklin introducing Bootsy Collins to Clinton, to the Brides’ top-10 hit “Disco to Go,” to the drugs that helped destroy the group, this book reveals the hidden lives and uncomfortable truths of life in P-Funk. More than sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Mothership Connected is about Black women navigating a tumultuous era and industry to become musical pioneers. Now, after decades in the shadows, these genre-defining women are finally telling their story.

 

Seth Neblett is a photographer, director, and writer. He is the son of Mallia “Queen of Funk” Franklin of Parliament-Funkadelic and Nathaniel “Nate” Neblett of New Birth. Neblett has directed videos for iconic musicians, including Chaka Khan’s “I Love Myself.”

Trijntje Oosterhuis is geboren op 5 februari 1973 in Amsterdam. Ze is uitgebroeide tot de grande dame onder de Nederlandse zangeressen en boekt al meer dan dertig jaar (inter)nationale successen. Ze werkte samen met wereldartiesten als Burt Bacharach, Gregory Porter, Toots Thielemans en Andrea Bocelli. Ook geeft ze zangworkshops waarbij ze mensen coacht naar verbinding met zichzelf en is ze een veelgevraagd spreker over de kracht van je stem.
