Het onderwerp dat de Britse schrijver Brian Klein heeft gekozen is zeker boeiend, interessant en verontrustend te noemen. Een aantal van de belangrijkste nazikopstukken blijken aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog geen zelfmoord te hebben gepleegd en zijn ontkomen naar Argentinië waar ze in de anonimiteit plannen beraamden om nogmaals aan de macht te komen en de wereld te kunnen regeren.

Als er bij een inbraak in Buenos Aires waarbij honderden kluisjes worden leeggeroofd ook bewijsstukken van de vlucht worden gestolen dreigt het geheim op straat te komen te liggen. Zeker nu nakomelingen van Hitler tot in de hoogste kringen van de Amerikaanse politiek door aan het breken zijn is dit een groot probleem.

Op basis van dit gegeven heeft Brian Klein een spannende thriller geschreven. Echter hier en daar gaat hij wel erg kort door de bocht, schort het een beetje ongeloofwaardigheid wat het verhaal niet helemaal goed doet. Desondanks is het een aardige thriller die voor de lezer die zich niet laat afleidend door de tekortkomingen, een aantal aangename uren leesplezier zal opleveren. De thriller is gewaardeerd met ∗∗∗∗∗ (zeer goed).

David Smitheram lives in the South West of England, and is currently the Director of a motorsport organising club. Previously he founded a business filming cars on the race track, qualified as an ARDS race instructor and worked for a Japanese manufacturer. It was whilst race organising that he first appreciated the strength and performance of BMW race cars. Over the past 15 years David has taken part in over 200 trackdays, and raced Caterham, Porsche and Lotus, currently racing a BMW E30. David has been fortunate enough to drive various BMW Z4s on the road and track in the UK, Europe and USA. His own lightly modified E85 Z4M is used in all weathers and David carries out all maintenance himself. As Z4 Register Representative David attends BMW Car Club UK social meetings and trackdays, and writes a regular monthly column for the club magazine. Geert Mak is op 4 december 1946 geboren in Vlaardingen. Hij is journalist en een van de meest gelauwerde non-fictieschrijvers van Nederland. Bij een breed publiek werd hij bekend met Hoe God verdween uit Jorwerd (1996), dat in 2021 in een herziene editie verscheen als Hoe God verdween uit Jorwert. Daarna volgde een van zijn meest gewaardeerde boeken De eeuw van mijn vader (1999). In 2004 verscheen In Europa, waarop hij in 2019 met Grote verwachtingen het vervolg publiceerde. Het in 2016 verschenen De levens van Jan Six beschrijft de gang van de patriciërsfamilie Six door meer dan vier eeuwen Amsterdamse geschiedenis. Verder publiceerde hij essays, kronieken, pamfletten en het Boekenweekgeschenk De brug in 2007. Zijn werk verschijnt in meer dan twintig landen.

Geert Mak ontving talloze prijzen, zowel in Nederland als in het buitenland, waaronder de Henriëtte Roland Holstprijs, de NS Publieksprijs (tweemaal), de Leipziger Buchpreis, de Gouden Ganzenveer, de oeuvreprijs van het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds en de prijs voor het beste politieke boek in Duitsland van de Friedrich Ebert Stichting. Ook werd hij meermaals tot Historicus van het jaar verkozen.

Aan het begin van deze eeuw raakte de cia in een zware crisis. Na de Koude Oorlog was de inlichtingendienst zijn oorspronkelijke doel kwijtgeraakt; buitenlandse posten werden gesloten, er werd gewerkt met verouderde technologie en cruciale informatie werd over het hoofd gezien. Later, na de aanslagen van 9/11, verschoof de focus naar paramilitaire activiteiten, met geheime gevangenissen en dodelijke drone-aanvallen, waarmee de kernmissie, het verzamelen van informatie, nog verder naar de achtergrond verdween. Dit had ernstige gevolgen: talloze buitenlandse agenten vonden de dood, personeelsdossiers werden gestolen door Chinese spionnen en computernetwerken werden door de Russische inlichtingendienst en Amerikaanse hackers geïnfiltreerd.

In De missie onderzoekt Tim Weiner de strijd van de cia om na deze jaren van mislukkingen zijn verloren spionagecapaciteiten te herstellen. Dit is de onthullende geschiedenis van de cia in de eenentwintigste eeuw, van 9/11 en de oorlogen in Afghanistan en Irak tot de huidige conflicten met Rusland en China.

Tim Weiner is geboren op 20 juni 1956 in White Plains, New York. Hij is schrijver en journalist. In 1988 won hij de Pulitzer Prize voor zijn reportages over nationale veiligheid. Hij rapporteerde over geheime operaties in Afghanistan, Soedan en Guyana en schreef artikelen en boeken over spionage, waaronder Vijanden van de staat. Texas is known to outsiders for mob violence, swaggering self-conception, and conservative politics, but Johnson reveals that the state has also been on the forefront of taming frontier violence, establishing LGBTQ rights, and developing modern businesses such as organic food and personal computing. Neither looking away from the dark chapters of Texas history nor letting them overshadow the achievements of democracy and pluralism that are some of the state’s greatest legacies, Johnson offers a balanced and inclusive history of an often contentious and stereotyped region, covering such topics as the persistence of Native Americans, the frontier story of the Alamo, agrarian populism, racial segregation, the state’s porous border with Mexico, and the way historical memory continues to shape the state’s identity. The reality of Texas, Johnson shows us, is even bigger than we think it is.

Benjamin Heber Johnson is professor of history at Loyola University Chicago. Raised in Houston, Texas, he is the author of numerous publications, including Revolution in Texas: How a Forgotten Rebellion and Its Bloody Suppression Turned Mexicans into Americans. Johnson lives in Chicago, Illinois.

De meest noordelijk gelegen staat van de Verenigde Staten. Bovendien is het de allergrootste van de Amerikaanse staten die grenst aan Canada en niet aan de rest van de Verenigde Staten. Op 3 januari 1959 is de staat toegetreden.

Alaska heeft zo’n 736.000 inwoners (2020). De hoofdstad is Juneau. Maar de grootste stad is Anchorage met een bevolking van zo’n  291.000 inwoners (2020). Vrijwel het grootste deel van de staat is bijna onbevolkt en heeft een extreem klimaat.
