De Club van 27 (of: ‘Forever 27’) is een denkbeeldige groep musici die allemaal op 27-jarige leeftijd zijn overleden – soms door een natuurlijke oorzaak, soms door overmatig drank- en/of drugsgebruik, soms door een fataal ongeluk, soms door eigen hand, en soms kon de doodsoorzaak niet worden vastgesteld.

Er bestaat geen strikte, wetenschappelijke omschrijving van de Club van 27: er bestaan geen strikte criteria voor. Vooral in de jaren Eric J. Later verdween die trend, mogelijk vanwege betere behandelingen bij overmatig drugsgebruik. Ook kan de levensstijl die bij een bepaalde muzieksoort ‘hoorde’ een rol hebben gespeeld. Hardrock maakte plaats voor bijvoorbeeld popmuziek.

Behalve de hier door Eric J Coolen geportretteerde Janis Joplin (1943–1970) – worden zo’n vijftig musici tot de Club van 27 gerekend. Andere bekende namen zijn die van Brian Jones (Rolling Stones; 1942–1969), Alan Wilson (Canned Heat; 1943–1970) en Kurt Cobain (Nirvana; 1967–1994). Deze MatchBoox maakt deel uit van de Club van 27 Serie.

Eric J. Coolen is in 1955 geboren in Haarlem. Hij is een Nederlandse illustrator, tekenaar en ontwerper/maker van boeken, beelden, gevelstenen en glas-in-loodramen. Naast beeldend kunstenaar is Coolen ook muzikant. Hij schrijft muziek en is medeoprichter van Het Ampzing Genootschap, Literair Haarlem en Nieuwe Gracht Producties. Sinds 2019 is Coolen ambassadeur voor Jeugdfonds Sport & Cultuur. Hij ontving voor zijn werk Kunst en Cultuurprijs De Olifant, De Antitheseprijs en de Penning van Verdienste.
