Zonder geld en zonder baan keert John-Calum, ‘Cal’, na zijn kunstopleiding terug naar zijn ouderlijk huis op het Schotse eiland Harris. Daar blijkt weinig veranderd – behalve hijzelf. In de door wind geteisterde boerderij waar hij opgroeide hervat Cal met tegenzin zijn oude leven. Gevangen tussen de twee bepalende figuren uit zijn jeugd: zijn vader John, een schapenboer, tweedwever en steunpilaar van de plaatselijke presbyteriaanse kerk, en zijn grootmoeder Ella, een grofgebekte vrouw uit Glasgow die al tientallen jaren een moeizame vrede in stand houdt met haar schoonzoon. Cal kan niet meer aarden in deze omgeving en John ergert zich aan het lange haar van zijn zoon en diens onwil om door het geloof gered te worden. Douglas Stuart is geboren op 31 mei 2026 in Glasgow en woont en werkt in New York. Hij schreef tien jaar aan zijn autobiografische Shuggie Bain dat door 44 uitgevers werd afgewezen. Shuggie Bain werd echter een van de meest succesvolle literaire debuten ooit. Het haalde de shortlist van o.a. de British Book Award en de National Book Award en won de Booker Prize.

Douglas Stuart was born May 31, 1976 in Sighthill, Glasgow, Scotland. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, he moved to New York, where he began a career in fashion design. Shuggie Bain, his first novel, won the Booker Prize and both ‘Debut of the Year’ and ‘Book of the Year’ at the British Book Awards. It was also shortlisted for the US National Book Award for Fiction, among many other awards. His second novel, Young Mungo, was a number one Sunday Times Bestseller. His short stories have appeared in The New Yorker and his essay on gender, anxiety and class was published by Lit Hub.
