Anna de Vey Mestdagh is in 1965 geboren in Wassenaar. Ze studeerde viool aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam bij Bouw Lemkes en Ilya Grubert. Sinds 1992 maakt zij deel uit van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. Daarnaast schrijft ze achtergrondartikelen, interviews en columns over muziekgerelateerde onderwerpen.

Theo van den Boogaard is geboren op 25 maart 1948 in Castricum.  is een begrip in de stripwereld. In 1989 ontving hij de Stripschapsprijs voor zijn gehele oeuvre, tegenwoordig is hij vooral bekend van de Sjef van Oekel-strips, naar de creatie van Wim T. Schippers. Onlangs werden zijn twee nieuwste strips gepubliceerd: Goedsniks of Kwaadsniks en Hap snap.

Frank Sinatra Jr. was born on January 10, 1944, in Jersey City, the son of famous singer Frank Sinatra and Nancy Barbota. He was active as a singer, conductor, and actor. In 1963, he was kidnapped by a gang led by Barry Keenan and held captive in a hotel in Stateline, Nevada. After his father paid the kidnappers a $240,000 ransom, he was released two days later. On March 16, 2016, Frank Sinatra Jr. died in a Daytona Beach hospital from a heart attack he had suffered earlier. He was 72 years old.

This is a book about what happened in the 1950s in a barn, an icehouse, and a greenhouse in the verdant Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. Against the backdrop of McCarthyism, the civil rights movement, the expansion of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora, and postwar cultural tourism, two New Yorkers bought part of a sprawling estate in Lenox, where they converted an old barn and other outbuildings into an inn that could host musical performances and seminars. The Berkshire Music Barn went on to host jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, and Billie Holiday, as well as jazz roundtables grounded in folkloric approaches to the music.

The Jazz Barn explores the cultural significance of venues like the Berkshire Music Barn and later the Lenox School of Jazz to tell a surprising story about race, culture, and place. John Gennari explores how a predominantly white New England town became a haven for African American musicians, and reveals the Berkshires as an important incubator not just of American literature and classical music but also of the Modern Jazz Quartet and Ornette Coleman’s “new thing.” The Berkshire Music Barn became a crucial space for the mainstreaming of jazz. By the late 1950s, the School of Jazz was an epicenter of the genre’s avant-garde.

Richly illustrated with the photographs of Clemens Kalischer among others, The Jazz Barn demonstrates that the locations where jazz is played and heard indelibly shape the music and its meanings.

Zanger, producer en muzikant was tijdens zijn leven al een soort van enigma in de popmuziek. Het was een man die grote successen boekte met zijn eigen bands als Sandy Coast en Rainbow Train, maar vooral met Anita Meyer die dankzij zijn muzikale kennis en kunde tot op de dag vandaag doorklinken. Maar Hans Vermeulen was ook een man met een aantal schaduwkanten die zijn leven en zeker ook dat van de mensen die hem na stonden verre gemakkelijk maakte en zelfs onmogelijk.

In zijn boek schetst Jos de Gruijter een portret Hans Vermeulen wat best een klus moet zijn geweest omdat hij zelf voor een deel van zijn leven onzichtbaar wilde zijn en Nederland zelfs ontvluchtte naar Thailand waar hij een ander leven probeerde op te bouwen. Op basis van gesprekken met veel personen die Hans Vermeulen tijdens zijn leven hebben gekend weet De Gruijter in zijn boek een portret te schetsen van een man die briljanten ingevingen hebben die konden zorgen voor successen en beklijvende muziek maar net zo vaak faalde en de plank volledig on misslaan.

De ondertitel van het boek zegt het eigenlijk al: Briljant muzikant, maar niet elke dag. En voor zijn privéleven gold dat hij zowel de gave had om personen waarmee hij te maken had en zichzelf verder te helpen maar het tegenovergesteld was evenzeer waar. Dat Jos de Gruijter, de muzikant Hans Vermeulen bewondert steekt hij niet onder stoelen of banken, maar gelukkig neemt hij ook ruim de tijd om zijn schaduwkanten over het voetlicht te brengen. Hierdoor is het boek zowel wel een ode als een scherp portret van een uniek muzikaal talent en een moeilijk mens. Gewaardeerd met ∗∗∗∗∗ (zeer goed).

Hans Vermeulen (1947-2017) was zanger, instrumentalist, producer, arrangeur en songwriter van Sandy Coast, Rainbow Train en onder meer Anita Meyer. Hits als ‘True Love That’s A Wonder’ en ‘The Eyes Of Jenny’ zijn nog regelmatig te horen op de radio. Een prima gozer wordt hij genoemd, charismatisch maar ook gevoelig voor verleidingen en gemakzuchtig. Daardoor breekt hij nooit door in Amerika.

Na een echtscheiding, een buitenechtelijke dochter, een miljoenenschuld en een drank- en drugsverslaving emigreerde Vermeulen eind jaren negentig naar het Thaise eiland Koh Samui, waar hij huwde met zangeres/gitariste Jariya ‘Aom’ Chatsuwan en leefde van de opbrengst van zijn hits.

In dit boek laat Jos de Gruiter dertig direct betrokkenen aan het woord, onder wie Vermeulens Thaise weduwe, zijn kinderen, managers, voormalige bandleden, touroperators, roadies, Anita Meyer, Hilde Marchal (Vermeulens eerste vrouw), Harry Knipschild, Earringbassist Rinus Gerritsen, voormalig deejay en ondernemer Tony Berk en dirigent Dick Bakker van het Metropole Orkest. Zij schetsen het beeld van een muzikant die door velen geniaal werd genoemd, ‘maar niet iedere dag’, zoals een van de geïnterviewden vaststelt.
