An illustrated history of British Army ambulance trains from the nineteenth century to the Cold War.

Railway wagons were first used by the British to carry sick and wounded members of the military during the Crimean War in 1855. Specially converted British hospital trains first appeared in the South African War of 1899–1902. In the First and Second World Wars British forces – army and navy – developed an intensive system of ambulance trains with medical staff and facilities on board to ferry the wounded away from the battlefields of Europe to the Channel ports. Ambulance trains were widely used within Great Britain to distribute casualties to hospitals all around the country. Also, in both world wars, the US Army in Europe operated ambulance trains in support of the British using British rolling stock. Their use continued into the Korean War and in the Cold War the British Army of the Rhine had a fleet of ambulance trains ready for use in Germany in the event of conflict in Northern Europe.

Whether your interest is railway, military or medical history, Brian Robertson presents a detailed history of the use of ambulance trains by British forces from their beginnings in the nineteenth century through to the Cold War, featuring rare historical photographs and drawings.

Colonel Brian Robertson was born in North London and educated at Highgate School. He attended the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, in London, and qualified as a doctor in 1972. His military service started in the Territorial Army in 1965 in 167 (City of London) Field Ambulance RAMC/TA. He was appointed to a Medical Cadetship in 1970 and following a short service Regular Commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps he transferred to the Army Medical Services TA. He spent 15 years training and operating Ambulance Trains within the British Army of the Rhine during the latter years of the Cold War. Between 1985-1994 he held the appointment of Squadron Commander of the Ambulance Train Squadron RAMC(V) in the rank of Lt Colonel. With the end of the Cold War all British Army Ambulance Train capability was disbanded. He was subsequently promoted and appointed to command 306 Field Hospital (V) between 1995-1999 and eventually retired from the Army in December 2007. The author has drawn on an extensive archive of historical photographs, drawings and other images to illustrate his researches in this book.

Following the sad death of Stuart Baker, the creator of Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland, in 2020, we were fortunate that another fine railway cartographer, Joe Brown, agreed to complete the work that Stuart had begun, to revise what became the 15th edition. However, the railway network of Great Britain and Ireland is always changing and never static and revised editions of this atlas are required on a regular basis; the rebuilding of the line from Oxford towards Cambridge and the reinstatement of the Foynes branch in Ireland being examples of some of the additions to this new edition.

Fortunately, Joe Brown has agreed to take on this work and this 16th edition will be the first one to be fully edited and revised by him. As with all the previous editions, the Atlas has been fully revised and updated whilst retaining the convenient format of mapping where each page overlaps with that on adjoining pages to make it easier to follow a long-distance route. Where appropriate, additional detailed inset maps have been drawn to show the complex railway developments in metropolitan areas such as Nottingham and Manchester.

While some minor changes to the layout have been made, Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland remains true to the standards of clarity and accuracy which were the hallmarks of its creator that have made the Atlas an essential work of reference for both railway professionals and enthusiasts since it was first published in the 1970s.

Atlas van een spoorlijn voor ambtenaren en badgasten.

Het jaar 1908 vormt een mijlpaal in de geschiedenis van de spoorwegen in Nederland. Na een lange en rumoerige voorbereidingstijd werd door de Zuid-Hollandsche Electrische Spoorweg-Maatschappij de reizigersdienst begonnen op de eerste geëlektrificeerde spoorlijn in Nederland, die van Rotterdam Hofplein naar Den Haag HS en Scheveningen Kurhaus.

Alle begin is moeilijk, en dat gold ook voor de ZHESM, maar uiteindelijk werd het toch duidelijk dat de elektrische tractie vele, vooral economische voordelen had ten opzichte van de stoomtractie. Van overheidswege werd dan ook omstreeks 1920 besloten om een groot deel van het Nederlandse spoorwegnet te gaan elektrificeren.

Atlas van het eerste elektrische spoor geeft met talrijke foto’s en tekeningen een uitvoerig beeld van het ZHESM-materieel en de zogenoemde Hofpleinlijn, waarvan het gedeelte naar Scheveningen in 1953 werd gesloten. Dit alles is geplaatst in het kader van de tijd waarin het zich afspeelt, eindigend in 1958 bij het vijftigjarig bestaan van zowel de Hofpleinlijn als de elektrificatie van het spoor in Nederland. Een tijd van vooruitgang en bijzondere ontwikkelingen, maar ook van verwoestend oorlogsgeweld en de daaropvolgende wederopbouw. Een monumentaal boek!

The nineteenth-century craze for building pleasure piers around the coast of Britain has left a legacy of seaside fun unmatched around the world. Although some of Britain’s piers have succumbed to fire and storm damage over the years, over fifty of these remarkable structures are still standing today. A number were built with railways and tramways to convey holidaymakers to the end of the pier, several of which survive today. These include the longest pier, at Southend-on-Sea, which opened an electric railway in 1890, when the pier was rebuilt to its present extent; the oldest seaside pleasure pier, at Ryde, which has a railway from the pier head that links to the rest of the network on the Isle of Wight; and the Hythe Pier Railway, which takes passengers to and from the ferry link at the end of the pier.

Martin Easdown has been researching Britain’s piers and their railways for many years and presents a photographic survey of them around the UK and Ireland. The photographs show both self-contained pier railways and tramways and pier railways connected to the National Rail Network. As well as the vehicles, pier stations are illustrated, including those that were not actually on the piers but the shore beside them. With many rare and fascinating photographs, this book will be of interest to railway enthusiasts and those nostalgic for the quintessential British seaside holiday.

Martin Easdown is a long-time member of the National Piers Society and one of the acknowledged experts on British piers. He has written extensively on the history of piers and Britain’s seaside in books, magazines and newspapers. He lives in Kent.

Natuurlijk is ook dit in de reeks boek over treinen en spoorwegen waarin uitgeverij traditioneel zeer sterk is prachtig en zeer verzorgd uitgegeven. Deze keer staat de stoomlocomotieven centraal die de Nederlands Spoorwegen direct na de Tweede Wereldoorlog in gebruik nam centraal. Het grootste gedeelte van de eigen was verwoest of afgevoerd naar het oosten daarom moest men uitwijken naar het buitenland. Hier werd een flink aantal tweede hands en zelfs nieuwe locomotieven gekocht waarmee het treinverkeer weer op gang kon worden gebracht.

Eelco Storm beschikt over een goede pen waardoor de teksten prima te lezen zijn en de rijkdom van alle foto’s in het boek zorgen voor veel kijkplezier. Uiteraard is het boek voor elke treinenliefhebber onmisbaar, maar ook de geïnteresseerd in het Nederland van direct na de oorlog zal dit mooi uitgegeven boek zeker kunnen waarderen. Toen de Nederlandse Spoorwegen na afloop van de Tweede Wereldoorlog begonnen met het plannen van een grootscheepse modernisering, kon het bedrijf er niet om heen dat er eerst stoomlocomotieven aangeschaft moesten worden om de oorlogsverliezen op te vangen.

Het nieuw laten bouwen van honderden stoomlocomotieven zou te duur worden, want de NS verwachtte deze locomotieven maar kort te gebruiken. Daarom werd gekeken naar de aanschaf van tweedehands locomotieven. Tussen 1945 en 1946 stelden de Nederlandse Spoorwegen verschillende series locomotieven in dienst die gekocht werden van het Britse War Department en van de Zwitserse spoorwegen. Daarnaast nam de NS de in Nederland achtergebleven Duitse stoomlocomotieven in dienst en werden vijftig locomotieven nieuw gebouwd in Zweden.

Enkele ervan deden maar een paar jaar dienst en andere bleven rijden tot aan het einde van de stoomtractie. Maar alle locs droegen bij aan de wederopbouw van de spoorwegen in Nederland en aan de economische wederopbouw van ons land.

Eelco Storm woont in Denemarken. Van jongs af aan is hij geïnteresseerd in het spoor en met name het Nederlandse spoor in de jaren vijftig. Hij schreef eerder De laatste stoomlocomotief en publiceerde diverse artikelen in spoorwegtijdschriften.

Ana van Es is in 1985 geboren in Nederland. Na haar studie Rechten aan de Universiteit Groningen werd ze journalist. Vanaf 2010 tot 2014 werkte ze voor de Volkskrant als journalist Noord-Nederland. Ze werd Midden-Oosten correspondent voor de krant in 2016. In 2018 was ze een van de weinige journalisten die verslag deed van de burgeroorlog in Jemen. Ze stopte als Midden-Oosten correspondent in 2021.

Het eerste boek dat Ana van Es, Onschuldig achter de tralies, Het eindstation van de jeugdzorg, schreef ze samen met Bram Hulzebos. Haar nieuwe boek over het Midden-Oosten, waarover je hier veel kunt lezen, verschijnt in mei 2024 bij uitgeverij De Bezige Bij.

Op de spoorlijn is de dood nooit ver weg. Maar op het Centraal Station van Bagdad durven ze ook te dromen: over toeristen die terugkeren en een snelle verbinding naar Europa.
