Professioneel marathonloper Michael Somers realiseerde in 2024 zijn grootste droom: zijn eerste Olympische marathon. Live op tv en met tranen in de ogen droeg hij deze prestatie op aan zijn doodzieke vader, zijn grootste fan, die drie dagen later overleed.

Amper zes maanden later kreeg Michael opnieuw een mokerslag. Door een sluimerende hartkwaal moest hij per direct en voor altijd stoppen met topsport. Alweer bleek hoe kwetsbaar het leven is. Het leven wijkt niet altijd voor onze dromen. Door dit harde vonnis verloor Michael zijn passie. Tot een nieuw leven hem een nieuw doel gaf.

Michael Somers is geboren op 2 maart 1995 in België. Hij zette zijn job als kinesist op pauze om als professioneel marathonloper voluit voor zijn Olympische droom te gaan. Na die indrukwekkende prestatie liet zijn emotionele boodschap aan zijn vader live op televisie niemand onberoerd. Niet veel later waren de reacties van pers en publiek op zijn persoonlijke video over het abrupt moeten stoppen van zijn sportcarrière overrompelend. Iedereen leefde mee met Michael, die niet de stoere atleet uithing maar kwetsbaarheid durfde te tonen. Speciaal voor zijn dochtertje schrijf hij dit intieme boek over de existentiële rollercoaster waarin hij in amper één jaar tijd was beland.

Flaptekst boek over de schaatsers Ard Schenk en Kees Verkerk

Na de successen van Ard Schenk en Kees Verkerk eind jaren 60 en begin jaren 70 groeiden zij uit  tot de boegbeelden van het Nederlandse allround schaatsen. Schaatsen was bij uitstek een amateursport, maar vereiste wel een professionele inzet. Toch kregen de schaatsers in die tijd slechts een vergoeding van 15 gulden per dag van de knsb. Samen met andere internationale toppers uit die tijd probeerden zij in 1972 een commerciële schaatscompetitie op poten te zetten, met hulp van een Amerikaanse miljonair. De nieuwe sportbond issl wilde met de grote namen een revolutie ontketenen door voor het eerst hun sporters te betalen voor hun prestaties. De schaatsprofs werden geboycot door de traditionele internationale schaatsbond met een keiharde concurrentiestrijd als gevolg.

IJsbrekers is een journalistieke zoektocht naar het intreden van de commercie in de mondiale schaatssport en onderzoekt vooral ook hoe die ontwikkeling is tegengewerkt en slechts van korte duur is geweest. Was de tijd er nog niet rijp voor? Was de organisatie van de nieuwe bond niet professioneel genoeg, of waren de tegenkrachten te machtig?

Allen Iverson was born on 7 June 1974 in Hampton, Virginia. He played for fourteen seasons in the NBA, during which he was Rookie of the Year, MVP, and eleven-time All Star. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2021, Iverson was selected to be part of the “NBA 75,” a group of the seventy-five most important players in the league’s first seventy-five years, thus cementing his status as one of the sport’s best players. Know equally for his aggressive, fast play style and groundbreaking integration of fashion and self-expression into sports, Iverson helped to usher in the age of hyper-individualistic sports personalities and shaped American culture in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Ray Beauchamp has been a criminal defense attorney in New York for the last fifteen years, having advocated for the rights of indigent people at the Legal Aid Society in Manhattan and the Bronx. Prior to Legal Aid, he clerked in the Second Circuit and served as managing editor of the Fordham Law Review. And prior to all that, he was a kid in West Philly, developing and nurturing a deep love of the 76ers.
