Richard Grant is an author of nonfiction books, a journalist, and a documentary film writer. His last two books, Dispatches from Pluto and The Deepest South of All, were New York Times bestsellers. His previous books include the adventure travel classic God’s Middle Finger: Into the Heart of the Sierra Madre and American Nomads, which was made into an acclaimed BBC documentary with Grant as the writer and star. Currently a contributor to Smithsonian magazine, Grant has published journalism in Esquire, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. On June 27, 2011, a deadly chemical accident took place inside the Tyson Foods chicken processing plant in Springdale, Arkansas, where the company is headquartered. The company quickly covered it up although the spill left their employees injured, sick, and terrified. Over the years, Arkansas-based reporter Alice Driver was able to gain the trust of the immigrant workers who survived the accident. They rewarded her persistence by giving her total access to their lives.

They have made capitalism less fair and less efficient, which is slowing economic growth and fueling popular anger. The first step to a cure is a correct diagnose of the problem. Capitalism has been badly distorted by constant government intervention and the relentless spread of a bailout culture. Building an even bigger state will only double down on what ruined capitalism in the first place.

LatinoLand is an exceptional, all-encompassing overview of Hispanic America based on personal interviews, deep research, and Marie Arana’s life experience as a Latina. At present, Latinos comprise 20 percent of the US population, a number that is growing. By 2050, census reports project that one in every three Americans will claim Latino heritage.

But Latinos are not a monolith. They do not represent a single group. The largest numbers are Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Salvadorans, and Cubans. Each has a different cultural and political background. Puerto Ricans, for example, are US citizens, whereas some Mexican Americans never immigrated because the US-Mexico border shifted after the US invasion of 1848, incorporating what is now the entire southwest of the United States. Cubans came in two great waves: those escaping communism in the early years of Castro, many of whom were professionals and wealthy, and those permitted to leave in the Mariel boat lift twenty years later, representing some of the poorest Cubans, including prisoners.

As LatinoLand shows, Latinos were some of the earliest immigrants to what is now the US—some of them arriving in the 1500s. They are racially diverse—a random fusion of White, Black, Indigenous, and Asian. Once overwhelmingly Catholic, they are becoming increasingly Protestant and Evangelical. They range from domestic workers and day laborers to successful artists, corporate CEOs, and US senators. Formerly solidly Democratic, they now vote Republican in growing numbers. They are as varied culturally as any immigrants from Europe or Asia.

Ned Blackhawk is geboren aan het begin van de zeventiger jaren van de vorige eeuw als lid van de inheemse Te-Moak stam van de Western Shoshone. Hij studeerde af als historicus aan de University of Washington in 1999. Tegenwoordig werkt hij aan de Yale University waar hij een van de weinige indiaanse professors is.

Inmiddels heeft hij een aantal boeken over de geschiedenis van de inheemse bevolking van Amerika gepubliceerd. De herontdekking van Amerika, waarover je hier alles lees, is het eerste boek van zijn hand dat in Nederlandse vertaling verschijnt.

Charles Groenhuijsen is op 16 april 1954 geboren in de Friese plaats Joure. Na de middelbare school studeerde hij geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Utrecht omdat hij de ambitie had journalist te worden. In 1975 brak hij zijn studie halverwege af omdat hij aan de slag kon redacteur bij het ANP en de Volkskrant om in 1983 naar de NOS over te stappen. Van 1986 tot 1989 was hij Amerika-correspondent voor net NOS journaal. Na zijn terugkomst werd hij presentator van verschillende actualiteiten programma’s presenteerde. In 1996 ging hij weer naar de Verenigde Staten om als Amerika-correspondent van het NOS journaal en NOVA, wat hij tot 2005 zou blijven doen, aan de slag te gaan. Hij werkte ook als freelance journalist voor een aantal andere media.

In 2006, terug in Nederland raakte hij in conflict met zijn werkgever de NOS wat leidde tot een conflict dat voor de rechter werd uitgevochten. Charles Groenhuijsen won uiteindelijk de zaak en kreeg een schadevergoeding van 489.375 euro. In de jaren erna was hij actief als columnist, schrijver, spreker en presentator. Sinds het begin van 2020 is hij als presentator van het TV-programma OP1 actief namens Omroep Max.

Tijdens zijn carrière publiceerde Charles Groenhuijsen een aantal journalistiek boeken. In de meeste gevallen over de Verenigde Staten en de Amerikaanse politiek. Zijn laatste boeken Alles gaat voorbij, zelfs Donald Trump uit 2019 en Amerika na Trump uit 2020. Zijn nieuwe boek waarover hier alle informatie te vinden is, verschijnt aan de vooravond van de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen in 2024.

Tussen de droom van 28 augustus 1963 en zijn tragische dood op 4 april 1968 liggen minder dan vijf jaren. In die periode volgt Harcourt Klinefelter als persvoorlichter van King de geweldloze strijd voor gelijke burgerrechten op de voet. Met zijn bandrecorder probeerde Klinefelter het geweld vast te leggen en de reportages wereldkundig te maken. Zo begon hij ook de legendarische speeches van Martin Luther King op te nemen. Na zijn verhuizing naar Nederland in 1972, blijft hij zich inzetten voor Kings idealen en wordt actief in de vredesbeweging. In die lijn toont hij zich nu solidair met Black Lives Matter en Extinction Rebellion. In Lessen van King laat historicus en journalist Peter Sierksma aan de hand van zes door Klinefelter gekozen thema’s zien hoe actueel de erfenis van King is.

Peter Sierksma (1958) studeerde Amerikaanse geschiedenis in Leiden. Het verhaal van de Civil Rights Movement onder leiding van Martin Luther King jr. speelde daar een grote rol bij. Na zijn studie werkte Peter als redacteur voor dagblad Trouw en de IKON. In 2001 won hij de Herman Wekkerprijs voor zijn artikelen over Engelstalige literatuur en popmuziek. In 2021 verscheen bij de Walburg Pers Mijnheer, dat weiger ik. Over de kampervaringen van zijn grootvader Pieter Kapenga, die in 1942 als politieman weigerde Joden te arresteren.
