Raevaara publiceerde tien romans, vijf non-fictieboeken en een verzameling korte verhalen, die werd bekroond met de Runebergprijs. Kenmerkend voor haar non-fictiewerk is de combinatie van wetenschappelijke inzichten, persoonlijke ervaringen en cultuurhistorische voorbeelden. De meeste steden zijn nu de thuisbasis van mensen die in sommige opzichten heel verschillend van elkaar zijn. Deze ‘superdiversiteit’ verandert onze buurten: de oude meerderheidsgroep is niet langer in de meerderheid en wordt een minderheid tussen andere minderheden. Maar hoe gaan mensen ‘zonder migratieachtergrond’ met deze situatie om?

Emoties boeken. In romans, thrillers en veel andere boeken speelt de emotie een belangrijke, zo niet bepalende rol. Maar wat zijn emoties precies? En welke menselijke emoties worden er door de wetenschap onderscheiden?

Wat zijn emoties volgens de wetenschap?

Naar de menselijke emotie wordt in de wetenschap best veel onderzoek gedaan. Een emotie, ook wel een gevoel genoemd, is een innerlijke beleving of gemoedsbeweging die door een situatie of gebeurtenis worden opgeroepen. Bovendien kunnen ze ook in sommige omstandigheden spontaan opkomen. Soms kunnen de emoties herkend worden aan een lichamelijke reactie, gedrag of een gelaatsuitdrukking, gelaatsuitdrukkingen en gedrag. Maar dit is niet altijd het geval. Verder is het belangrijk om te weten dat het gaat om subjectieve ervaringen die iedereen weer anders kan ervaren.

Hoeveel emoties worden er onderscheiden?

Het antwoord op deze vraag kan niet honderd procent sluitend gegeven worden. Wetenschappelijke onderzoeken kunnen verschillende uitkomsten geven. Wat in ieder geval vaststaat is dat emoties een zeer belangrijke rol, misschien wel bepalende rol spelen in het leven en welbevinden van de mens. In een groot en vrij recent wetenschappelijk onderzoek door de University of California in 2017, onderscheidt 27 categorieën menselijke emoties in video’s.
