The Good Hope is an epistolary novel based on the life of the Reverend Lucas Debes, a larger than life character called Peder Børresen in the novel. It tells a story of brutal oppression, poverty and terrible diseases, but also of resistance and of having the courage of one’s convictions. It is a dramatic fantasy in which Heinesen’s customary themes – the struggle against evil, sectarianism, superstition and oppression –emerge on a higher plane, set against the backcloth of the Faroe Islands in the 1690s.
William Heinesen werd op 15 januari 1900 geboren in Tórshavn op Faeröer als zoon van een Deense moeder en een Faeröerse vader. Hij voelde zich in beide talen even thuis. Hoewel hij het grootste deel van zijn leven op de Faeröer doorbracht, koos hij ervoor om in het Deens te schrijven, omdat hij vond dat dit hem meer creatieve 
vrijheid bood. Voor zijn roman Det gode håb ontving hij in 1965 als eerste auteur van Faeröer de prestigieuze Noordse Raad Literatuurprijs. Al zijn romans zijn in het Engels vertaald, In het Nederlands is slecht een bundel met een aantal verhalen uitgegeven.Hoewel hij internationaal bekend was als dichter en romanschrijver, verdiende hij zijn brood vooral als beeldend kunstenaar. Zijn schilderijen variëren van grootschalige muurschilderingen in openbare gebouwen tot olieverfschilderijen, penschetsen, karikaturen en collages. Hij overleed op 12 maart 1991 in zijn geboorteplaats Tórshavn, 91 jaar oud.
