In de jaren zestig geeft ze haar comfortabele leven op om met de Franse priester Joseph Wresinski wereldwijd te strijden voor de rechten van mensen die leven in extreme armoede. Barones tussen de armen is het fascinerende levensverhaal van een onterecht vergeten vrouw tegen de achtergrond van een verdwijnende standenmaatschappij, de verwoestende Tweede Wereldoorlog en de doorbraak van vrouwen in (inter)nationale organisaties.

Astrid Schutte – voorheen docent Nederlands en journalist – is schrijver en schrijfcoach. Ze is geïntrigeerd door hoe mensen grote veranderingen kunnen ondergaan wanneer de tijd, omstandigheden en hun ambities daarom vragen. Ze schreef eerder onder meer De gelukkige school (2018) en De laatste heer (2021).

Audrey Niffenegger is on 13 Juni 1963 in South Haven, Michigan in the United States. She is a visual artist and writer who lives mostly in Chicago and occasionally in London. She has published six books, including the novels The Time Traveler’s Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry. She helped to found the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts. Her art has been exhibited by Printworks Gallery in Chicago since 1986. She is a Professor in the Fiction Department of Columbia College. Her recent projects include a ballet, Raven Girl, in collaboration with Wayne McGregor for the Royal Opera House Ballet.

Danse Macabre beschrijft de gang naar volwassenheid van een wat dromerig kind en vormt de proloog voor Antipovs langere novelle Opgesloten. Al kijkend naar vliegtuigen stelt een jongen zich het leven nog als eindeloos en onbegrensd voor. Maar dan ligt zijn grootvader op sterven: een eerste kennismaking met de dood. In verwarring observeert hij dat iedereen om hem heen de stervende liefst lijkt te negeren uit angst de dood onder ogen te zien.

Jaren later. In de bus van Warschau naar Minsk op twaalf kilometer van de grens met Wit-Rusland realiseert Antipov zich dat hij van een feestje nog wat drugs in zijn jaszak heeft en zoekt een prullenbak.

Dan gaat alles mis. In schrijnend contrast met zijn leven als kind, ogen gericht op de oneindige hemel, is alles eindig nu hij is opgesloten. Onvervalst en eerlijk schrijft hij over zijn gevangenschap en de tochten door het Wit-Russische gevangenissysteem.

Uiteindelijk blijkt het de muziek te zijn die hem in het leven de meeste steun biedt. ‘Remember me, remember me, but ah, forget my fate.’ Antipov weet in deze twee kwetsbare novellen zijn persoonlijke verhaal, zijn eigen ‘dans met de dood’ te verweven met recente ontwikkelingen in zijn thuisland, Rusland.

Vasili Antipov is geboren in 1982. Hij volgde een muzikale opleiding aan het Tsjaikovski Conservatorium in Moskou, de Gnesins’ Muziekacademie en de Frankfurter Hochschule für Musik. Sinds 2014 componeert Antipov, zijn composities zijn uitgevoerd in Europa, Japan en de VS. Hij houdt zich bezig met bergbeklimmen, nam deel aan speleologische expedities en werkte lange tijd aan bouwinstallaties met de hoogste moeilijkheidsgraad als ‘industrieel klimmer’. Sinds 2016 woont hij in Duitsland.

Angela Carter was born on 7 Mai 1940 in Eastbourne, England,. She lived in Japan, the United States and Australia. Her first novel, Shadow Dance, was published in 1965. Her next book, The Magic Toyshop, won the John Llewllyn Rhys Prize and the next, Several Perceptions, the Somerset Maugham Award. She died on 16 February 1992 in London at the age of 51 from lung cancer.

Her essay ‘On the Complicated Questions Around Writing About Travel’ was selected for The Best American Travel Writing 2021.
