De van nature verlegen Rafael van der Vaart voorzag een kalm, vrolijk leventje in een woonwagen, naast de woonwagen van zijn ouders. Het liep anders doordat hij bij Ajax doorbrak, precies in de tijd dat tal van (nieuwe) media zich en masse op talenten stortten.

Nog steeds is hij niet van het scherm te slaan als vrolijke, uitgesproken voetbalanalist. Tussendoor zit hij aan tafel bij de Koninklijke familie, loopt hij bezweet rond door Ahoy’ als directeur van een groot internationaal padeltoernooi, wordt hij nagetekend in een kasteel, lazert hij voor een ander tv-programma in een grote bak slijm en toont hij zich bloednerveus tijdens het profdebuut van zoon Damián.

Zijn werkzaamheden wisselt hij af met een leven als huisman in Boekarest alwaar vriendin Estavana handbalt. Nog altijd zijn vader Ramon en moeder Lolita onmisbaar om circus-Van der Vaart draaiende te houden.

Voetbaljournalist Bart Vlietstra volgde Van der Vaart al tijdens diens voetbalcarrière en de laatste twee jaar zeer intensief in onder meer Heemskerk, Beverwijk, Amsterdam, Hilversum, Rotterdam, Boekarest en Chiclana de la Frontera.

Bart Vlietstra is in 1978 geboren in Rotterdam. Hij is freelance voetbaljournalist bij de Volkskrant en The Guardian. Van zijn hand is de biografie over de vroegere Feyenoorder Leonardo, Leo en Feyenoord de eerste van de eeuw. Samen met Sander de Kramer schreef het boek Padel! Bovendien was hij een van de auteurs van PSV, de beste van de eeuw. Hij is medeoprichter van het voetbalblad Santos en op regelmatige basis gast bij FC Rijnmond.

In 2016 werd hij onderscheiden met de Theo Koomen Award voor het beste sportcommentaar van het jaar. Hij is de vaste F1-commentator en medeoprichter van Grand Prix Radio.

Erik Houben is geboren in 1968. Hij is ondernemer en organiseerde onder meer de F1 demonstraties in Rotterdam. Hij schreef – deels met Olav Mol – meer dan 25 boeken over Formule 1, MotoGP, de Dakar Rally en een biografie over Ayrton Senna.

In 1903 overleed de dichter, schrijver, predikant en hoogleraar Nicolaas Beets. Het voelde, schreef een krant, alsof er een goede vriend was heengegaan. Zijn dood luidde het einde in van een tijdperk. Beets wás de negentiende eeuw. Zijn leven bestreek bijna negentig jaar, van koning Willem I tot koningin Wilhelmina.

Voor de meeste Nederlanders is zijn naam onlosmakelijk verbonden met de Camera Obscura (1839), de bundel schetsen en verhalen die hij onder het pseudoniem Hildebrand publiceerde. Geen ander Nederlands boek uit de negentiende eeuw werd zo vaak herdrukt. Maar Beets was veel meer. Zijn leven lang hield hij vast aan de burgerlijke idealen uit zijn jeugd: God, gezin en vaderland. Mede daardoor groeide hij uit tot een nationaal icoon. Door de nauwkeurigheid waarmee hij zijn bestaan heeft geboekstaafd, is hij niet alleen een chroniqueur van zijn eigen leven, maar van de hele negentiende eeuw.

Rick Honings is geboren op 27 april 1984 in Heerlen, Limburg. Hij is neerlandicus en Scaliger-hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Leiden. Hij is een specialist op het gebied van de negentiende-eeuwse Nederlandse en de Nederlands-Indische literatuur. Eerder publiceerde hij onder meer De dichter als idool. Literaire roem in de negentiende eeuw(2016) en De ontdekking van Insulinde. Op reis in Nederlands-Indië in de negentiende eeuw (2023), dat op de shortlist van de Libris Geschiedenis Prijs 2024 stond.

Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, T. S. Eliot and many others, Mansfield was at the heart of literary London at its most experimental. By the time of her death in 1923, aged just 34, she had broken boundaries and created new ways of writing that led her literary sparring partner Virginia Woolf to later admit that Mansfield’s ‘was the only writing I was ever jealous of’. Based on compelling new research, Gerri Kimber challenges previous conceptions surrounding the author’s life, uncovers friendships and relationships formerly barely acknowledged and offers innovative readings of Mansfield’s most celebrated stories.

Gerri Kimber is Visiting Professor in the Department of English at the University of Northampton. She was president of the Katherine Mansfield Society for ten years (2010–20) and has published extensively on Mansfield’s life and work.

A gripping biography of a man who escaped slavery to become an influential abolitionist, famously known as the King of the Underground Railroad.

Jermain Wesley Loguen (1813–1872) was a fugitive from slavery, an abolitionist, and a minister, teacher, and political activist. He worked alongside Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, and his home in Syracuse, New York, was among the most publicized Underground Railroad stations in the northern states. Loguen’s political commitments in the years before the Civil War were carried out at great personal risk, for he had liberated himself from slavery in Tennessee and was in constant danger of being captured and reenslaved under the Fugitive Slave Law. Defiantly, however, he refused to purchase his own freedom, an act that he believed would have legitimized the rights of slaveholders. In addition to aiding fellow fugitives from slavery, Loguen worked tirelessly to promote Black equality and uplift throughout upstate New York and Canada. After Emancipation, he extended his work to aid freedpeople in the South and to advocate for Black equality on a national scale.

In this engaging study, Angela F. Murphy follows Loguen from his early years through his transformation into one of the brightest stars in the constellation of abolitionists and reformers in New York.

Angela F. Murphy is a professor in the Department of History at Texas State University. She is the author of The Jerry Rescue: The Fugitive Slave Law, Northern Rights, and the American Sectional Crisis. She lives in Wimberley, Texas.

Veel mensen kennen de naam Julius Spier uit de dagboeken van de Joodse schrijfster Etty Hillesum. Spier (1887-1942) was een uit Berlijn gevluchte therapeut en handlezer. Begin 1941 analyseerde hij Hillesums handen, waarna zij achtereenvolgens zijn cliënt, leerling, secretaresse en geliefde werd.

Wie was deze man die op Etty en veel anderen zo’n aantrekkingskracht uitoefende? Spier is vanwege zijn handleeskunde (een pseudowetenschap) en therapeutisch grensoverschrijdend gedrag vaak neergezet als een vrouwenversierder en charlatan. In deze eerste biografie over Spier schetst Alexandra Nagel op basis van nieuwe bronnen een genuanceerder beeld. Spier was een complexe, getalenteerde Joodse vluchteling die in een gespannen tijdsgewricht probeerde een dubieus beroep gelegitimeerd te krijgen. Ook was deze leerling van Carl G. Jung een gepassioneerde geest, een groot muziekliefhebber en iemand die een vrouw aan zijn zijde nodig had.

Alexandra Nagel is geboren in 1961. Ze is historicus op het gebied van de westerse esoterie.
