Carpentaria is an epic of the Gulf Country of northwestern Queensland, Australia. Its portrait of life in the precariously settled coastal town of Desperance centers on the powerful Phantom family, leader of the Westend Pricklebush people, and its battles with old Joseph Midnight’s renegade Eastend mob, on the one hand, and with the white officials of Uptown and the nearby rapacious, ecologically disastrous Gurfurrit mine on the other.

Wright’s masterful novel teems with extraordinary characters—the outcast savior Elias Smith, the religious zealot Mozzie Fishman, the murderous mayor Bruiser, the moth-ridden Captain Nicoli Finn, the activist Will Phantom, and above all, the rulers of the family, the queen of the garbage dump and the fish-embalming king of time: Angel Day and Normal Phantom—who stand like giants in a storm-swept world.

Wright’s storytelling is operatic and surreal: a blend of myth and scripture, politics and farce. She has a narrative gift of remaking reality itself, altering along her way, as if casually, the perception of what a novel can do with the inside of the reader’s mind.

Alexis Wright is op 25 november 1950 geboren in Cloncurry, Queensland, Australië. Naast schrijfster is ze een activistite die opkomt voor de landrechten van de Aboriginals, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Australië en is zelf een Waanyi.

Ze debuteerde in 1997 met de roman Plains of Promise, gevolgd in 2006 door Carpentaria waarmee ze definitief doorbrak en succes boekte. Over gaar derde roman The Swan Book uit 2015, kun je hier alles lezen. Het het eerste boek van haar hand dat in Nederlandse vertaling verschijnt. Alexis Wright situeert haar verhaal over Oblivia, die na een traumatische ervaring weigert te spreken, in een dystopisch Australië, waar de Aboriginals onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden leven in een omgeving die voorgoed is aangetast door de klimaatverandering.

Als tiener is een verloren gewaand meisje uit de holte van een eeuwenoude boom gered door Bella Donna van de Strijders, een oude witte vrouw die is gevlucht voor de klimaatrampen in Europa. Bella Donna bedenkt voor haar de naam Oblivia, anderen noemen het vreemde meisje Obscuria. De twee wonen op een oud, achtergelaten oorlogsschip in een vervuild drooggevallen moeras, waar Bella Donna historische en mythische verhalen vertelt over zwanen.

Afgeschermd van de rest van Australië door het leger en met traditionele leiders die van alles berooid zijn, maar vast willen houden aan oude waarden, is het moeras veranderd in ‘het alleronbekendste detentiekamp ter wereld’ voor inheemse Australiërs.

Wanneer Warren Finch, de eerste Aboriginal-president van Australië, met zijn charismatische imago het kamp aandoet, blijkt hij op zoek te zijn naar zijn ‘beloofde vrouw’. Wayne McLennan is een in Nederland woonachtige Australische avonturier die eerder opzien baardde met verhalen over door hem zelf beleefde avonturen. Een nacht bij de rivier is zijn nieuwe boek waarin hij vertelt over zijn zoektocht naar Aboriginals waarmee hij in het verleden is opgetrokken en zelfs bervriend is geweest.

Voor een Australische blanke man is omgang met Aboriginals, de oorsponkelijke bewoners van Australië, verre van vanzelfsprekend, laat staan dat je vrienden wordt. Maar voor Wayne McLennan ligt dit anders. Een aantal decennia geleden trok hij door Australië als tentbokser. Dat waren een soort van prijsvechters die met name in de Australische outback voor een beetje vermaak zorgde. De meeste van deze boksers waren Aboriginals en zo leerde Wayne McLennan ze kennen.

Na inmiddels enige tientallen jaren weg te zijn uit Australië was McLennan benieuwd hoe zijn vrienden het maakten. Bovendien stelde hij zich de vraag of echte contact tussen witte man, zoals hij zelf, en een Aborginal mogelijk is. Van zijn zoektocht doet McLennen op een directe en onverbloemde wijze verslag. Hij geeft inzicht in de vaak schandalige wijze waarop de oorspronkelijke bewoners van het continent werden behandeld en hoe de stand van zaken nu is.

Avontuurlijk, eerlijk en boeiend verslag van de zoektocht naar Arborignal vriendschap

Net als in zijn eerdere boeken kiest Wayne McLennan voor een directe, niets verbloemende aanpak. Hij ontziet niets of niemand en schrijft desondanks met liefde en empathie. Zowel zijn eigen tekortkomingen als die van zijn Aboriginal vrienden komen aan bod. Een nacht bij de rivier is een geslaagde zoektocht en boeiend reisverslag van een auteur die geboren lijkt voor het avontuur. Het boek is een aanbeveling voor wie meer wil weten te komen over de Arborinals en een vollediger beeld wil krijgen van de soms te veel geïdealiseerde Australische samenleving. Veel Australiërs brengen het grootste deel van hun leven door zonder ooit te praten met iemand van de Aboriginalbevolking. Wayne McLennan groeide op in een mijnstadje vlakbij de kust. Vanwege zijn liefde voor boksen (een sport die populair is bij Aboriginals), heeft hij wél mannen die tot de oorspronkelijke bewoners van het continent behoren, leren kennen en respecteren.

Een nacht bij de rivier is een zoektocht naar het antwoord op de vraag of echt contact tussen een witte Australiër en een Aboriginal mogelijk is. McLennan wordt gedreven door zijn verlangen om de waarheid te vertellen over mensen die vaak schandalig behandeld zijn en geminacht. In hard en rauw proza vertelt hij over zijn eerste contact met Aboriginals als jonge man. Twintig jaar later keert hij terug naar Australië, zoekt zijn mates van toen op en maakt kennis met hun nieuwe, trotse houding. Zij eisten respect – en kregen dat in veel opzichten ook.
