Paul Starr is born 12 May 1949. He is professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University and founding coeditor of the American Prospect magazine. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction and Bancroft Prize in American History for The Social Transformation of American Medicine. Over a half-century he has written essays and op‑eds for newspapers and magazines as well as books on America’s institutions, history, and politics.

Rob de Wijk is geboren op 14 augustus 1954 in Dordrecht. Hij is hoogleraar internationale betrekkingen aan de Universiteit Leiden en oprichter van het Den Haag Centrum voor Strategische Studies (HCSS). In 1965 hielp de Amerikaanse regering het Indonesische leger bij een bloedige zuivering, waarbij naar schatting een miljoen vermeende communisten – vaak onschuldige burgers – om het leven kwamen. Met de vernietiging van de grootste communistische partij buiten China en de Sovjet-Unie werd niet alleen een politieke beweging uitgewist, maar ook de weg vrijgemaakt voor vergelijkbare terreurcampagnes elders in de wereld, zoals in Chili en Brazilië.
