In de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw maakte Mariët Meester een rigoureuze keuze. Samen met haar vriend bouwt ze een kleine woonwagen die getrokken kan worden door een paard. Samen trekken ze door Frankrijk. Het is een keuze voor de ultieme vrijheid wars van huisje-boompje-beestje. Een leven ook dat door lang niet iedereen gewaardeerd wordt en soms ronduit op opstandigheid stuit.

In de memoir Een vrij leven brengt Mariët Meester een boeiende ode aan het leven dat ze toen leidde en waarmee ze ook daarna is doorgegaan. Het soort van klimaatneutrale leven waarover nu zoveel gesproken en geschreven wordt maar dat in de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw nog door weinigen ten uitvoer werd gebracht, laat staan dat we ons met het begrip bezighielden.
