Mitchell Abidor is a writer and translator living in Brooklyn, New York. In addition to his many translation works, he is the author of May Made Me and I’ll Forget It When I Die!: The Bisbee Deportation of 1917. Abidor is the translator and editor of Victor Serge’s anarchist writings, Anarchists Never Surrender, and translated with Richard Greeman Serge’s Notebooks (1936-1947).

The book is at once a study of Soviet tobacco deeply enmeshed in its social, political, and cultural context and an exploration of the global experience of the tobacco epidemic.

Starks examines the Soviet antipathy to tobacco yet capitulation to market; the development of innovative cessation techniques and clinics and the late entry into global antitobacco work; the seeming lack of cultural stimuli alongside massive use; and the expansion of smoking without the conventional prompts of capitalist markets. She tells the story of Philip Morris’s “Mission to Moscow” campaign for the Soviet market, the triumph of the quintessential capitalist product—the cigarette—in a communist system, and the successes and failures of the world’s first national antismoking campaign. The interplay of male habits and health against largely female tobacco producers and medical professionals adds a gendered dimension.

Smoking developed, continued, and grew in the Soviet Union without mass production, intensive advertising, seductive industrial design, or product ubiquity. The Soviets were early to condemn tobacco, and yet, by the end of the twentieth century Russians smoked more heavily than most most other nations in the world. Cigarettes and Soviets challenges interpretations of how tobacco use rose in the past and what leads to mass use today.

Tricia Starks is Director of the Humanities Center and Professor of History at the University of Arkansas. She is also the author of  Smoking under the Tsars.

Russia and China, the largest and most populous countries in the world, respectively, have maintained a delicate relationship for four centuries. In addition to a four-thousand-kilometer border, they have periodically shared a common outlook on political and economic affairs. But they are, in essence, profoundly different polities and cultures, and their intermittent alliances have proven difficult and at times even volatile.

Philip Snow provides a full account of the relationship between these two global giants. Looking at politics, religion, economics, and culture, Snow uncovers the deep roots of the two nations’ alignment. We see the shifts in the balance of power, from the wealth and strength of early Qing China to the Tsarist and Soviet ascendancies, and episodes of intense conflict followed by harmony. He looks too at the experiences and opinions of ordinary people, which often vastly differed from those of their governments, and considers how long the countries’ current amicable relationship might endure.

Philip Snow has travelled extensively in Russia and China since the 1960s and has lived in Hong Kong since 1994. An expert in China’s international relations, he is the author of The Star Raft: China’s Encounter with Africa and The Fall of Hong Kong.

De vergeten geschiedenis van de rebelse prinses Julie. Maar weinig mensen kennen het verhaal van de Duitse prinses Julie. Dat begint in 1795, wanneer ze door haar moeder Auguste van Saksen-Coburg-Saalfeld op veertienjarige leeftijd wordt meegenomen naar Sint-Petersburg en wordt uitgehuwelijkt aan groothertog Konstantin, een Romanov en de kleinzoon van Catharina de Grote. Toch moet ze ook daar weer vechten tegen de heersende normen waarbinnen de verhoudingen tussen man en vrouw onherroepelijk vast lijken te liggen.

Met De rebelse Romanovblaast Helen Rappaport het verhaal van deze tegendraadse prinses nieuw leven in. Ze toont de vele offers die Julie heeft gebracht en plaatst haar verhaal in de context van het tumultueuze Europa van begin negentiende eeuw. Helen Rappaport is geboren in 1947 in Bromley, England. Ze iseen Britse historicus en schrijver, gespecialiseerd in het victoriaanse tijdperk en revolutionair Rusland. Ze schreef meerdere internationale bestsellers, waaronder De gezusters Romanov en De Romanovs na de val.

Het is bijna niet meer voor te stellen na een eeuw vol vijandigheid, maar in 1921 hebben de Verenigde Staten een grootscheepse reddingsactie uitgevoerd om Rusland te behoeden voor een van de grootste hongersnoden uit haar geschiedenis.

Na jaren van oorlog en revolutie stond de zojuist opgerichte Sovjet-Unie op instorten. In zeer grote delen van het gigantische land stond er een ramp te gebeuren: de honger was extreem en er waren al vormen van kannibalisme ontstaan uit pure wanhoop. Lenin was radeloos: het laatste wat hij wilde, was de hulp inroepen van de kapitalistische vijand, maar hij kon niet anders. De VS grepen in, met succes.

Vrijwel direct na de succesvolle reddingsactie wilden beide partijen er echter weinig meer van weten. Ze werden elkaars vijand en de gebroederlijke samenwerking werd aan beide kanten vakkundig onder het tapijt geveegd. Totdat de meesterlijke pen van Douglas Smith dit vergeten stuk geschiedenis weer opdiepte.
