In this book Ed Bethune and Anthony Dawson from the 1722 Waggonway Project take the reader on a century long tour of the earliest of Scottish railways, beginning in 1722 with the Tranent–Cockenzie Waggonway and ending with the Garnkirk & Glasgow Railway of 1831, the first ‘modern’ railway in Scotland.

Scottish railway history began in 1722 when William Dickson commenced work on the Tranent–Cockenzie Waggonway. Built entirely in wood and designed to carry coal from pits at Tranent to salt pans at Cockenzie, it was the first railway to be built in Scotland. Developing first in the most industrialised parts of the country, in the Lothians and later around Glasgow, wooden and iron railways flourished in no small part thanks to the work of Robert Stevenson.

Ed Bethune and Anthony Dawson of the 1722 Waggonway Project present a century-long tour of the earliest of Scottish railways, beginning in 1722 and ending with the Garnkirk & Glasgow Railway of 1831, the first ‘modern’ railway in Scotland. The 1722 Waggonway Heritage Group was established in 2017 to preserve, promote and enhance the history of the Tranent–Cockenzie Waggonway through research, archaeology and community heritage initiatives. Thanks to the work of the group, much is now known about how early wooden railways were constructed and how early nineteenth-century fish-bellied rails laid on stone blocks worked, as well as the 1833 Robert Stevenson-designed harbour at Cockenzie.

Brand-new information from the archival and archaeological work into Scotland’s earliest railways is showcased alongside fascinating and rare images, all serving to set the scene for the beginnings of the Scottish railway network as conceived by trailblazers William Dickson, William Adam and Robert Stevenson.

The Triumph Razoredge cars were the last of the traditionally styled British coach-built cars to be produced in the post-war period. In this, the first book to be devoted to the various models under the Razoredge name between 1946 and 1954, Triumph Razoredge expert John Bath describes the development of the models after the acquisition of Triumph by the Standard Motor Company in 1944. The models, which were designed to compete with upmarket cars produced by Rover, Jaguar and others, included the 1800 saloon, the 2000 saloon, both versions of the Triumph Renown and the limousine version. The various evolutions and changes in the models, such as the use of a Standard chassis and the Standard Vanguard drivetrain, as well as both interior and exterior design modifications, are documented here. A smaller model produced by Triumph, known as the Mayflower, which was largely aimed at the American market, is also touched on.

Manager Don Revie had transformed them from a struggling Second Division outfit at the beginning of the 1960s to being arguably the best team in Europe, but they were dogged by the ‘Dirty Leeds’ tag for years. This book covers the period from Leeds United winning their first league championship in 1969 through to the end of 1979, including the heartbreaking treble disappointment of 1970, the FA Cup win in 1972, the shock defeat against Sunderland in 1973, the second title triumph of 1974 and the devastating defeat to Bayern Munch in the 1975 European Cup final. Read about the controversies of match-fixing allegations against Don Revie and the succession of managers who failed to match up to Revie’s legacy, including Brian Clough and Jock Stein. The period was littered with controversy, criticism and some famous feuds with Bob Stokoe, Alan Hardaker and Brian Clough as United singlehandedly ushered in an era of near-to-the-knuckle professionalism and gamesmanship.

Dave Tomlinson is the owner of the Mighty Whites website and a passionate Leeds United fan.
