Recensie van de redactie

De aandacht voor de Westerse geschiedenis is tot voor kort onevenredig groot geweest in verhouding tot die van rest van de wereld en die van Afrika in het bijzonder. Er is daar wel verandering in aan het komen, zij het aantal geschiedenisboeken waarin Afrika of Afrikaanse landen centraal staan, met uitzondering van Egypte, nog altijd beperkt is.

Gelukkig is er nu het boek over de boeiende geschiedenis van Ethiopië, van de hand van historicus Steven Kaplan die decennia lang over de Afrikaanse geschiedenis gedoceerd heeft aan verschillende universiteiten. Voor sommigen van onze zal er ergens ver weg een een echo hebben geklonken dat de geschiedenis van Ethiopië, of beter gezegd ongeveer het gebied dat wij nu zo noemen in Oost-Afrika, rijk en bijzonder is. Maar veel verder dan dat er in het niet al te verre verleden keizers het land regeerden, waarvan Haile Selassie, de bekendste was, dat het een protectoraat van Italië is geweest en dat er een bloedige oorlog werd en wordt gevochten met het buurland Eritrea, komen we meestal niet. Laat staan dat de vroege geschiedenis van het land bekend is.

En die vroege geschiedenis van Ethiopië van ongeveer 1000 v.Chr. tot 1500 na.Chr, is dit boek zich op richt. Dat Steven Kaplan, de schrijver van het boek een historicus van naam en faam is blijkt uit de inleiding waarin hij uitgebreid verantwoording aflegt voor de keuzes die hij heeft gemaakt in het boek. Dit leest wat moeizaam. Maar laat je er niet door afschrikken want wat daarna volgt is een boeiend en goed geschreven verhaal over een land en gebied waarvan we in het westen veel te weinig weten.

Kaplan laat met overtuiging zien wat het betekent om een gebied te zijn dat op de scheidslijn ligt van Noord en Zuid en Oost en West. Want dat is het geval met Ethiopië. Er niet alleen geografisch speelt dit een rol ook is het een grensgebied tussen de Islam en het christendom en vooral het laatste geloof heeft op een bijzondere wijze voet aan de grond gekregen. Bijzonder knap is de wijze waarop Kaplan de geschiedenis van het land helder over het voetlicht weet te brengen, zonder aan de complexiteit ervan voorbij te gaan. Het is een boeiend en zeer lezenswaardig: een boek dat goed bijdraagt aan het verder blootleggen van de Afrikaanse geschiedenis en een puzzelstuk toevoegt aan de wereldgeschiedenis. Between the nineteenth century and today, colonial officials, collectors, and anthropologists dismembered African buildings and dispersed their parts to museums in Europe and the United States. Most of these artifacts were cataloged as ornamental art objects, which erased their intended functions, and the removal of these objects often had catastrophic consequences for the original structures. Africa’s Buildings traces the history of the collection and distribution of African architectural fragments, documenting the brutality of the colonial regimes that looted Africa’s buildings and addressing the ethical questions surrounding the display of these objects.

Itohan Osayimwese ranges across the whole of Africa, from Egypt in the north to Zimbabwe in the south, and spanning the western, central, and eastern regions of the continent. She describes how collectors employed violent means to remove elements such as columns and door panels from buildings, and how these methods differentiated architectural collecting from conventional collecting. She shows how Western collectors mischaracterized building components as ornament, erasing their architectural character and concealing the evidence of their theft. Osayimwese discusses how the very act of displacing building parts like floor tiles and woven screen walls has resulted in a loss of knowledge about their original function and argues that because of these removals, scholars have yet to fully grasp the variety and character of African architecture.

Richly illustrated, Africa’s Buildings uncovers the vast scale of cultural displacement perpetrated by the West and proposes a new role for museums in this history, one in which they champion the repatriation of Africa’s architectural heritage and restitution for African communities.

Itohan I. Osayimwese is professor of the history of art and architecture and urban studies at Brown University, where she is an affiliate faculty in Africana studies and at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. She is the author of Colonialism and Modern Architecture in Germany and the editor of German Colonialism in Africa and Its Legacies.

Dennis R. McBride is the mayor of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin and co-author of The Luckiest Boy in the World. He holds a journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a master of public administration degree from Princeton University, and a law degree from New York University.
