Het is een zaterdag in maart 1935 en John Grimes wordt veertien. Hij is een gevoelige, hyperintelligente jongen uit Harlem, stiefzoon van een hardvochtige prediker bij de pinkstergemeente. In deze sterk autobiografische roman doorspekt Baldwin zijn verhaal over de spirituele, seksuele en morele ontwikkeling van de jongen met de levensverhalen van diens moeder, vader en tante.

Baldwins debuut verbluft door de lyrische precisie, psychologische scherpte, symbolische kracht en de niet-aflatende maar ook empathische woede. Die geldt vooral de dubieuze rol als instrument van onderdrukking die de kerk speelde in de levens van veel zwarte Amerikanen. Een twintigste-eeuwse klassieker.

James Arthur (Jimmy) Baldwin is geboren op 2 augustus 1924 in New York City, was een Amerikaanse romanschrijver en maatschappijcriticus die romans, verhalen en essays schreef. In Go Tell It on the Mountain James Baldwin debut novel from 1953 first editiontotaal schreef hij zes romans: Zijn debuutroman Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953) vertaald als Kom, roep het van de bergen,  werd gevolgd door Giovanni’s Room (Giovanni’s kamer). In 1962 verscheen Another Country, vertaald als Een ander land, waarna in 1968 Tell Me How Long the Train’s Been Gone (Zeg me hoe lang de trein al weg is)verscheen. De roman If Beale Street Could Talk (Als Beale Street kon praten) verscheen in 1974 gevolgd in 1979 door zijn laatste roman Just Above My Head (Bijna binnen handbereik). Zijn essays, verzameld in Notes of a Native Son (1955), onderzoeken de complexiteit van raciale, seksuele en klassenverschillen in westerse samenlevingen, met name in het Amerika van het midden van de twintigste eeuw. Bovendien schreef hij een tweetal toneelstukken en gedichten. Op 1 december 1987 overleed James Baldwin in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Frankrijk aan de gevolgen van maagkanker en werd 63 jaar oud.
