On 26 June 2013 she died at the age of 77.

Willa Cather was born on 7 December 1873 in Gore, Virginia. She Willa Cather The Song of the Lark first editionwas an American writer best known for her novels of the Plains and for One of Ours, a novel set in World War I, for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1923. She was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1943 and received the gold medal for fiction from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1944. By the time of her death in 1947 she had written twelve novels, five books of short stories, and a collection of poetry. She died on 24 April 1947 in New York City, 73 years of age.

Kathryn Scanlan laat in Vier de teugels Sonia aan het woord, een paardentrainer. Langs de renbaan nippen mannen in peperdure pakken aan hun champagne, maar achter de schermen heersen loodzware arbeidsomstandigheden en een gewelddadige machocultuur. Sonia kent onvoorwaardelijke liefde voor de paarden die zij traint en werkt tegelijk in een wereld die in een paardenlijf slechts economische waarde ziet.

Met verbluffende precisie schetst Scanlan in korte vignetten – met de kracht van dynamiet – welke alledaagse en uitzonderlijke gebeurtenissen een mensenleven vormen. De keuzes die Scanlan daarin maakt, wat ze weglaat en wat ze vertelt, tonen haar weergaloze meesterschap. Kathryn Scanlan (1980) woont in Los Angeles. Haar werk is verschenen in Granta en The Paris Review. Ze studeerde Engels en creative writing aan de Universiteit van Iowa en aan de kunstacademie in Chicago. Haar debuutroman aug 9-fog, een literaire bewerking van een gevonden dagboek, werd in 2019 gepubliceerd. In 2024 won ze de Gordon Burns Prijs met Kick the Latch.
