Nury Turkel was born in a ‘re-education’ camp in China at the height of the Cultural Revolution. He spent the first several months of his life in captivity with his mother, who was beaten and starved while pregnant with him, whilst his father served a penal sentence in an agricultural labour camp. Following this traumatic start – and not without a heavy dose of good fortune – he was later able to travel to the US for his undergraduate studies in 1995 and was granted asylum in the country in 1998 where, as a lawyer, he is now a tireless and renowned activist for the plight of his people.

Part memoir, part call-to-action, No Escape will be the first major book to tell the story of the Chinese government’s terrible oppression of the Uyghur people from the inside, detailing the labour camps, ethnic and religious oppression, forced sterilisation of women and the surveillance tech that have made Xinjiang – in the words of one Uyghur who managed to flee – ‘a police surveillance state unlike any the world has ever known’.

Nury Turkel is a lawyer and Uyghur rights advocate based in Washington, DC. He is currently serving as vice chair for the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and serves as chairman of the board for the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), which he cofounded in 2003. In September 2020, Nuryl was named one of the TIME 100 Most Influential People in the World, and in May 2021, he was named on Fortune’s List of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.

Recollections, as a great woman once said, may of course vary, but this is my story, the way I remember it, written with no fear, no favour – and no fucks left to give.

Buckle up.

I thought long and hard about writing this memoir. I’ve done so not to settle old scores or plead my case, but more because I hope it’s a tale worth telling, not just for those who are interested in the political events of the past few years, but also because it’s about the people and characters behind those events, and why things ended up the way they did.

For nearly 20 years I was inside the rooms of government, a sanctioned eavesdropper on the rise – and fall – of the Cameroon style of Conservatism. At the same time I was building a career in journalism, raising two children and doing my best to support my own husband, Michael Gove, on his political journey. I was both an insider and an outsider; an observer – via my journalism – as well as a participant in the cut and thrust (mainly cut, if I’m honest) of frontline politics.

After my divorce from Michael and the demise of the Conservatives’ Old Guard, that all came to an end. I’m no longer officially a Westminster WAG, but you won’t find me mourning. Politics trampled my health, my happiness, my marriage, my sanity; it placed intolerable pressure on my loved ones, especially my children; it twisted my sense of self, and others’ sense of me; it tainted everything I did or said. I can’t say I miss it. I do, however, miss the life and the relationships I had before it all. These are the recollections of a survivor, but they are also a love letter to all that was lost in the wreck.

Sarah Vine was born in Wales in 1967. She moved as a child to Italy, returning to the UK as a teenager. Sarah read Modern Languages at UCL before moving into journalism, starting at the Daily Mirror before joining The Times, where she worked for 15 years. It was there that she met Michael Gove, then Comment Editor, before he became an MP and senior Cabinet minister. They married in 2001 before parting ways in 2021. They remain on friendly terms, and co-parent their two children, Beatrice and William. Sarah now lives in London with the kids and (too many) animals.

Het is door de kracht van het schrijven dat Jan Siebelink zijn vrouw Gerda in de maanden na haar overlijden nog even bij zich kan houden en hijzelf overeind blijft.

Even helder en teder, met de even sensitieve als beeldende pen die hij hanteert in zijn romans, ontstaat dag na dag in fragmenten het weergaloze portret van een intens leven samen. Het is een allerpersoonlijkst boek, door de lichte schrijvershand van Jan Siebelink zowel krachtig als troostrijk.

Jan Siebelink werd op 13 februari 1938 geboren te Velp nabij Arnhem, waar zijn vader een kleine bloemisterij dreef. Hij werd onderwijzer en studeerde in zijn vrije tijd Franse taal- en letterkunde. Tijdens zijn studie kwam hij in aanraking met het werk van de Franstalige schrijver J.-K. Huysmans. Diens roman A rebours maakte door zijn verblindende stijl, religieuze preoccupatie en verheerlijking van het kwaad een verpletterende indruk op Siebelink, die het vertaalde onder de titel Tegen de keer . Op de dag dat hij de vertaling inleverde, schreef hij in de huiskamer van zijn moeder, op de plaats waar zijn vader was overleden, zijn eerste verhaal: ‘Witte chrysanten’. Met vier andere verhalen vormde dit zijn debuut Nachtschade (1975). Het boek viel op omdat het door zijn zwartromantische motieven afstand nam van het realisme dat toen in de letteren heerste. Siebelink wilde een verbinding tot stand brengen tussen het Hollandse realisme en de Franse literatuur uit het 19e-eeuwse fin-de-siècle.

In zijn romans en verhalen gaat het altijd om gewone mensen, maar door intens licht op hen te laten vallen, komen ze los van de werkelijkheid en worden tot raadselachtige personages. Literatuur, volgens Siebelink, hoort mensen bijzonder te maken. In het oerverhaal ‘Witte chrysanten’ zitten alle motieven die hij later in zijn romans De herfst zal schitterend zijn (1980), En joeg de vossen door het staande koren (1982), De overkant van de rivier (1990) zou uitwerken. Geleidelijk aan werd duidelijk wat die motieven waren: de kwekerij die steeds meer het beeld zou worden van het verloren paradijs, het duistere geloof van de vader dat, hoe exact en liefdevol beschreven, nooit begrepen zal worden, het middelbaar onderwijs, de sociale rangorde in een ogenschijnlijk genivelleerde samenleving en bovenal de jeugdjaren in het land van herkomst: Velp en omstreken.
