Yvonne Rainer Nevertheless review en recensie

  • “Rainer’s accomplishment in this book is to translate her artistic mind into a practice. It is of course then truly original, and she is sharing her originality generously, humanly, here in this book. It’s pure gold for someone who is wanting to wrestle with how this revolutionary choreographer upended art history.” (Annie-B Parson, Big Dance Theater)

Flaptekst choreografieboek van Yvonne Rainer en Emmanuèle Phuon

A legendary choreographer’s personal and practical guide to the art of dance-making.

Yvonne Rainer was a founding member of Judson Dance Theater, a 1960s New York artists’ collective that championed ordinary, spare movements and spontaneity. Rainer’s decades of creativity—in dance and in filmmaking—have inspired generations of avant-garde, political, and feminist choreographers. Her many works include the iconic dance Trio A and the film Hand Movie.

In this book, Rainer dancer and choreographer Emmanuèle Phuon helps Rainer gather teaching notes from her dance classes and workshops, passages from her creative journals, and her newer thoughts on movement and art, opening a window on to the life’s work of a transformative artist. With fifty prompts for improvisational movement (“39. Travel a long distance as fast as you can while making regular changes in your means of locomotion”), sly illustrations by Pascal Lemaître, and an illuminating interview with Phuon, this workbook makes Rainer’s friendly, humorous, and down&-to-earth creative practice available to everyone. Because, as Rainer says, if you can move, you are a dancer.

Yvonne Rainer (b. 1934) is an American dancer, choreographer, and filmmaker, and a cofounder of the Judson Dance Theater. She lives in New York City.

Emmanuèle Phuon, a choreographer, dancer, and teacher, is a faculty member at Montclair State University, NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ Open Arts/Collaborative Arts, and Yale University. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Srinath Raghavan Indira Gandhi and the Years that Transformed India review en recensie

  • “By far the single most sophisticated treatment of Indira Gandhi’s political life, and the economic, political, strategic and legal context that shaped her political choices. With lightly carried erudition, Raghavan gives an analytically sharp history of a decisive period in the making of modern India.” Pratap Bhanu Mehta, author of The Burden of Democracy)
  • “A riveting, indispensable history of Indira Gandhi’s extraordinary political career by India’s finest political historian. Raghavan masterfully weaves the intricate drama of high party politics—psychological dynamics and key personalities—around a cohesive understanding of the larger social and economic forces that wrought Indian democracy as we know it today.” (Karuna Mantena, author of Alibis of Empire)

Flaptekst van het boek over Indira Ghandi

The gripping story of Indira Gandhi’s premiership—and the profound influence she had on India.

Indira Gandhi’s ascent as prime minister of India in 1966 was entirely unforeseen. But she soon emerged as one of the most powerful political leaders of her times, who transformed the world’s largest democracy. She served as prime minister for a remarkable fifteen years, leaving behind a complex and deeply controversial legacy.

In this fascinating account, Srinath Raghavan tells the story of Indira Gandhi’s political career and the momentous changes that India experienced under her leadership. From her tentative start in high office to her remarkable electoral victories, the dark days of the Emergency of 1975–77, and her assassination at the hands of her bodyguards in 1984, Raghavan sheds new light on her politics and government, as well as on her adversaries and critics. He shows how the 1970s were the hinge on which the history of the country turned—and how Indira Gandhi transformed the new postcolonial nation into the India of today.

Srinath Raghavan is professor of international relations and history at Ashoka University, New Delhi. He is the author of several acclaimed books, including India’s War: The Making of Modern South Asia and Fierce Enigmas: A History of the United States in South Asia.

Flaptekst van het boek over de historische verhoudingen tussen China en Rusland

A compelling, expansive history of the relationship between China and Russia, from the seventeenth century to the present.

Russia and China, the largest and most populous countries in the world, respectively, have maintained a delicate relationship for four centuries. In addition to a four-thousand-kilometer border, they have periodically shared a common outlook on political and economic affairs. But they are, in essence, profoundly different polities and cultures, and their intermittent alliances have proven difficult and at times even volatile.

Philip Snow provides a full account of the relationship between these two global giants. Looking at politics, religion, economics, and culture, Snow uncovers the deep roots of the two nations’ alignment. We see the shifts in the balance of power, from the wealth and strength of early Qing China to the Tsarist and Soviet ascendancies, and episodes of intense conflict followed by harmony. He looks too at the experiences and opinions of ordinary people, which often vastly differed from those of their governments, and considers how long the countries’ current amicable relationship might endure.

Philip Snow has travelled extensively in Russia and China since the 1960s and has lived in Hong Kong since 1994. An expert in China’s international relations, he is the author of The Star Raft: China’s Encounter with Africa and The Fall of Hong Kong.

Flaptekst boek over de geschiedenis van de wiskunde

A lively, accessible history of mathematics throughout the ages and across the globe.

Mathematics is fundamental to our daily lives. Science, computing, economics—all aspects of modern life rely on some kind of maths. But how did our ancestors think about numbers? How did they use mathematics to explain and understand the world around them? Where do numbers even come from?

In this Little History, Snezana Lawrence traces the fascinating history of mathematics, from the Egyptians and Babylonians to Renaissance masters and enigma codebreakers. Like literature, music, or philosophy, mathematics has a rich history of breakthroughs, creativity and experimentation. And its story is a global one. We see Chinese Mathematical Art from 200 BCE, the invention of algebra in Baghdad’s House of Wisdom, and sangaku geometrical theorems at Japanese shrines. Lawrence goes beyond the familiar names of Newton and Pascal, exploring the prominent role women have played in the history of maths, including Emmy Noether and Maryam Mirzakhani.

Snezana Lawrence works as a senior lecturer at Middlesex University, London, and was the chair of the History and Pedagogy of Mathematics International Study Group between 2020 and 2024. She is the author of The New Year’s Present from a Mathematician and editor of Mathematicians and Their Gods. She is on X as @snezanalawrence and @mathshistory.

Flaptekst van de biografie van antropoloog Franz Boas

A thought-provoking account of the life and work of Franz Boas and his influential role in shaping modern anthropology

Franz Boas born on 9 July 1858 in Minden, Germany en died 21 December 1942 in New York City is widely acknowledged for his pioneering work in the field of cultural anthropology. His rigorous studies of variations across societies were aimed at demonstrating that cultures and peoples were not shaped by biological predispositions. This book traces Boas’s life and intellectual passions from his roots in Germany and his move to the United States in 1884, partly in response to growing antisemitism in Germany, to his work with First Nations communities and his influential role as a teacher, mentor, and engaged activist who inspired an entire generation.

Drawing from Boas’s numerous but rarely read writings, Noga Arikha brings to life the man and the ideas he developed about the complex interplay of mind and culture, biology and history, language and myth. She provides a comprehensive picture of the cultural contexts in which he worked, of his personal and professional relationships, and of his revolutionary approach to fieldwork. He was celebrated in his lifetime for the cultural relativism he developed and the arguments he marshaled against entrenched racialism. But his was a constant battle, and Arikha shows how urgently relevant his voice and legacy have become again today.

Noga Arikha is a research associate at the European University Institute in Florence. She is the author of The Ceiling Outside: The Science and Experience of the Disrupted Mind and Passions and Tempers: A History of the Humours. She currently lives in Florence, Italy.

Flaptekst van het boek over de oorlogsjaren van Josephine Baker

The full story of Josephine Baker’s wartime and intelligence work in France and North Africa.

Before the Second World War, Josephine Baker (1906–1975) was one of the most famous performers in the world. She made her name dancing on the Parisian stage, but when war broke out she decided not to return to America. Instead, Baker turned spy for the French Secret Services.

In this engaging, deeply researched study, Hanna Diamond tells the full story of Baker’s actions for the French and Allied powers in World War Two. Drawing on previously unseen material, Diamond reveals the vital role Baker played throughout the war, from counterintelligence work for the Allied landings in North Africa to serving in the French Air Force in 1944–45. A woman of colour operating in a white male environment, Baker exploited her celebrity to enable her war work across France, Spain, Portugal, North Africa, and the Middle East.

This groundbreaking account is the first to reveal the full significance of Baker’s wartime contribution.

Flaptekst van het boek over oorlogsgraven van Tim Grady

A fascinating and moving history of the British and German war dead buried on enemy soil in the two world wars.

Why do societies only remember their own national war dead? Today, the enemy dead might be largely hidden from view, but this wasn’t always the case. During both world wars, Germans and Britons died in their thousands in enemy territory. From Berlin to Bath, London to Leipzig, civilian communities buried the enemy in the closest parish churchyard. Perhaps surprisingly, local people embraced these graves, often caring for them with considerable tenderness.

Tim Grady explores the history of this curious aspect of postwar community. He reveals how, as the two states moved bodies to new military cemeteries, local people protested at the disturbance of the dead, and ties between the bereaved families and those who cared for the graves were severed forever. With the enemy out of sight and mind, the British and Germans concentrated solely on commemorating their own war dead, and their own sacrifices. Today’s insular public memory of the world wars was only made possible by clearing away signs of the enemy—allowing people to tell themselves much simpler narratives of the recent past as a result.

Tim Grady is professor of modern history at the University of Chester. He is the author of A Deadly Legacy, which was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize and the Cundill Prize, and The German-Jewish Soldiers of the First World War in History and Memory, which was proxime accessit for the RHS Gladstone Book Prize.

  • “This may be Donald Fixico’s best book in a long and distinguished career. He tells the dramatic story of Chitto Harjo and the Crazy Snake Rebellion to reveal a larger and longer struggle. Both personal and thoroughly researched, this revealing and quite original history traces how Native communalism and the Medicine Way resisted Christianity and American individualism within the Muscogee Nation.” (Richard White, Stanford University)
  • “Chitto Harjo (Crazy Snake) was a man caught in the grind between two worlds as the ancient one of the Muscogees met the overpowering one of Euro-American newcomers. Was he a troublemaker or patriot? Donald Fixico argues compellingly here for the latter, and by doing that he throws light on global colonization as a clash of spiritual and perceptual power as much as one of outward authority and command.” (Elliot West)

Flaptekst van het boek over Chitto harjo van Donald L. Fixico

How a Mvskoke traditionalist leader forged a movement to resist the division of tribal lands and keep his people on the everlasting Medicine Way.

Chitto Harjo (“Crazy Snake”) had several names—Wilson Jones, Bill Jones, Bill Harjo, Bill Snake—and people called him many things: troublemaker, rebellion leader, uncivilized Indian, martyr, murderer. Many called him crazy for fighting against progress and for his commitment to traditions that they believed were outdated and dying out. Yet in the eyes of many Mvskokes and traditionalists of other nations, he was a hero, a defender of the old ways, a Native patriot, and a leader of the Medicine Way.

These traditionalists believed in the Mvskoke worldview, which has inspired the Mvskokes and other Southeastern peoples to carry on their traditions as they have done for hundreds of years. In this engaging account, historian Donald L. Fixico tells the story of the Mvskoke people and their fight for survival and unity amid enduring tensions between white “civilization” and traditional culture. A personal story that begins with Fixico attending a Green Corn Ceremony with his father and young son, this engrossing narrative integrates traditional knowledge with historical method to present an Indigenous perspective on Mvskoke and Native American history.

Donald L. Fixico (Muscogee, Seminole, Shawnee, and enrolled Sac and Fox), originally from Oklahoma, is Regents and Distinguished Foundation Professor of History at Arizona State University. A former Newberry Fellow, UCLA Postdoctoral Fellow, and Ford Fellow, he is the author and editor of seventeen books.
