David McNally Slavery and Capitalism review en recensie

  • “What a remarkable book. Grown from the theoretical soil of C.L.R. James, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Sylvia Wynter, Slavery and Capitalism nourishes readers with example after thrilling example of how to think dialectically. McNally’s archival evidence tells stories he uses to make a compelling, cumulative argument about class composition centered on the chattel proletariat. Suggesting critical elements of internationalism, the book invites methodological extension and substantive debate to connect his cases to the vast South Atlantic world where most enslaved people lived, worked, and fought. Fresh historical understanding of past social reality can refocus contemporary political analysis of racial capitalism. McNally sharpens dynamic awareness of highly differentiated sectors and regions of value production and social reproduction—the overlapping and interlocking realities where people self-consciously make freedom by remaking place.” (Ruth Wilson Gilmore, author of Abolition Geography)
  • “David McNally’s deft application of Marx’s theory and method not only unearths the hidden dynamics of slavery’s political economy but radically broadens our understanding of modern capitalism and its class struggles. The result: a new history of slavery that centers the enslaved—the chattel proletariat—not as ‘constant capital’ or fungible cogs in the machine but as its gravediggers.” (Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Race Rebels: Culture, Politics, and the Black Working Class)

Flaptekst van het boek van David McNally over slavernij en kapitalisme

The first systematic Marxist account of the capitalist character of Atlantic slavery.

Karl Marx’s writings on enslavement and labor have fallen out of favor among historians, but David McNally injects new life into them. Slavery and Capitalism gives the first systematic Marxist account of the capitalist character of Atlantic slavery—using colonial travel literature, planter records and diaries, and slave narratives—to support the provocative claim for enslaved labor in the plantation system as capitalist commodity production.

Weaving together history, political economy, and radical abolitionism, McNally demonstrates that plantation slaves formed a modern working class. Unlike those scholars who insist that enslaved people were too sensible to set their sights on liberty, he highlights the self-activity of enslaved people fighting for their freedom and reframes their resistance as labor struggles over production and reproduction, with significant implications for US and Atlantic history and for understanding the roots of racial capitalism.

David McNally is Cullen Distinguished Professor of History and Business at the University of Houston, where he directs the Project on Race and Capitalism. He is the author of seven previous books and more than sixty scholarly articles.

Flaptekst van het boek van Evan N. Dawley over de geschiedenis van Taiwan

Taiwan’s story told through its people – their origins, struggles and transformations.

While most English-language histories of Taiwan focus on its geopolitical role, this history centres on the people of Taiwan themselves and explores how they have formed a unique polity, telling the story of the Indigenous Taiwanese, the Hoklo and Hakka who came from China before the twentieth century, Japanese colonialism and the Chinese who arrived after 1945.

Historian Evan N. Dawley describes how successive waves of immigration changed Taiwan and how these diverse groups of Indigenous tribes and settlers interacted economically and culturally, creating new Taiwanese identities in the process. Over the last century Taiwan has developed from an authoritarian state to one of the world’s most vibrant democracies and advanced economies, a successful independent society, albeit one whose existence remains under a shadow.

Evan N. Dawley is Associate Professor of History at Goucher College, Maryland. He is the author of Becoming Taiwanese: Ethnogenesis in a Colonial City, 1880s–1950s (2019).

Flaptekst biografie van General Joseph Eggleston Johnston

Explores Confederate General Joseph Johnston’s innovative strategies and leadership during the Civil War.

Confederate General Joseph Eggleston Johnston’s brilliance in adapting to the evolving art of war set him apart as one of the Civil War’s most innovative strategists. Johnston keenly understood the revolutionary impact of new technologies—rifled muskets, railroads, telegraphs, and trench warfare-and applied these insights to conserve the South’s most critical resource: its soldiers. His motto, “Let the place go, and save the garrison,” encapsulated his belief in prioritizing manpower over territory; he was convinced of the importance of concentrating force to overcome the advantage in numbers the Union enjoyed.

Johnston’s reputation as a master tactician was widely recognized, even by his adversaries. Renowned British war correspondent Sir William Howard Russell lauded him in 1861 as the Confederacy’s finest strategist. Years later, Union General Ulysses S. Grant conceded that Johnston caused him more anxiety than any other Southern commander, stating, “Take it all in all, the South, in my opinion, had no better soldier than Joe Johnston—none at least that gave me more trouble.”

Despite his genius, Johnston’s career was marred by his fraught relationship with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis was critical of Johnston and his meddling undermined Johnston’s strategies and weakened the Southern war effort. As noted by his contemporary, General James Longstreet, Johnston’s talents for army command and campaign management were unparalleled, but he was denied the opportunities afforded to others. This book argues that with proper support and alignment of leadership, Johnston’s innovative strategies might have altered the course of the war.

Widely regarded as the first modern war, the Civil War demanded visionary leadership. This new biography of Johnston sheds light on his legacy as a brilliant leader, offering a fresh perspective on a conflict that defined a nation.

F. Gregory Toretta is a writer and historian with a passion for the American Civil War, accumulating an extensive library and undertaking copious research.

Bij Uitgeverij Omniboek verschijnt begin november 2025 de Nederlandse vertaling van het boek verschijnen met als titel Opstand in Judea.

Barry Strauss Jews vs. Rome review en recensie

  • “Historian Strauss hits another home run with this thorough account of the tumultuous relations between Rome and its most contentious subjects, the Jews, in ancient times … There is no better history of this important but little-known subject.” (Library Journal)
  • “Judaism as we know it today is not the Judaism of the Bible–it is the Judaism that emerged from the destruction of the Second Jewish Commonwealth at the hands of the Romans. As Barry Strauss illustrates in this riveting account, this pivotal period was defined by conflicting values and visions among Jews, corruption of their religious institutions, infighting when they could least afford it and much more that our own time eerily echoes. This stunning account leaves us with a much deeper understanding of not only the Jews’ past, but their present as well, and perhaps even their future.” (Daniel Gordis)

Flaptekst van het boek Barry Strauss over het Joodse verzet tegen de Romeinen

A new history of two centuries of Jewish revolts against the Roman Empire, drawing on recent archeological discoveries and new scholarship by leading historian Barry Strauss.

Jews vs. Rome is a gripping account of one of the most momentous eras in human history: the two hundred years of ancient Israel’s battles against Rome that reshaped Judaism and gave rise to Christianity. Barry Strauss vividly captures the drama of this era, highlighting the courageous yet tragic uprisings, the geopolitical clash between the empires of Rome and Persia, and the internal conflicts among Jews.

Between 63 BCE and 136 CE, the Jewish people launched several revolts driven by deep-seated religious beliefs and resentment towards Roman rule. Judea, a province on Rome’s eastern fringe, became a focal point of tension and rebellion. Jews vs. Rome recounts the three major uprisings: the Great Revolt of 66–70 CE, which led to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, culminating in the Siege of Masada, where defenders chose mass suicide over surrender; the Diaspora Revolt, ignited by heavy taxes across the Empire; and the Bar Kokhba Revolt. We meet pivotal figures such as Simon Bar Kokhba but also some of those lesser-known women of the era like Berenice, a Jewish princess who played a major role in the politics of the Great Revolt and was improbably the love of Titus—Rome’s future emperor and the man who destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple.

Today, echoes of those battles resonate as the Jewish nation faces new challenges and conflicts. Jews vs. Rome offers a captivating narrative that connects the past with the present, appealing to anyone interested in Rome, Jewish history, or the compelling true tales of resilience and resistance.

Flaptekst van het boek over de geschiedenis van de ziekte Dengue

A global history of dengue fever and humanity’s ongoing struggle against this persistent disease.

In Fevered Cities, Randall M. Packard explores the complex and evolving history of dengue fever, the world’s most widespread mosquito-borne viral disease. From its early manifestations in the eighteenth century to its current prevalence across more than one hundred countries, this book traces how dengue emerged as a global health challenge shaped by ecological, social, and economic conditions.

Packard examines the disease’s spread through urban landscapes, focusing on specific cities like Philadelphia, Manila, Havana, and Rio de Janeiro to illustrate how local contexts have defined outbreaks and responses. He highlights the transformation of dengue from a poorly understood physiological ailment to a vector-borne disease tied to the Aedes aegypti mosquito, and later to more severe conditions like dengue hemorrhagic fever. As climate change expands the geographical range of mosquito habitats and global trade accelerates the movement of people and goods, this book explores the social inequities, unplanned urbanization, and environmental degradation that have made dengue increasingly difficult to control.

From vector control campaigns to cutting-edge biotechnologies like genetically modified mosquitoes and vaccines, Packard charts humanity’s attempts to combat this tenacious disease. Fevered Cities is an essential history for public health experts, historians, and anyone concerned with the intersection of disease, society, and the built environment.

Randall M. Packard is Emeritus Professor of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Flaptekst van het boek over de geschiedenis van Okinawa en de Riukiu-eilanden

The first comprehensive history of the Ryukyu Islands region in English.

The Ryukyu Islands between Japan and Taiwan consist of around 160 islands and are home to about 1.5 million inhabitants. Across the islands’ history, sea-lanes and trade patterns have connected them to the East China Sea region, giving them a unique vantage point on the region’s changes and making them a useful lens through which to view and understand those transformations.

In this book, Gregory Smits marshals his expertise to canvass the environmental, political, and social history of this fascinating area, emphasizing the diversity of influences from China, Japan, and Korea that have shaped it. Smits begins by tracing the islands’ early history from the time of the oldest extant human remains, through massive inflows of settlers from Japan, until the emergence of a centralized state in the sixteenth century. He then traces the development of the Ryukyu Kingdom from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, examining its major cultural formations and the interplay of local and external influences driving its evolution. Finally, Smits ushers readers to the modern era, from the end of the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1879 through World War II, the era of American military control, and on to the present. He concludes with their present-day status as a tourist destination affected by ongoing geopolitical, economic, and environmental challenges. Synthesizing decades of research, this book is an indispensable, comprehensive guide to the islands’ history for scholars and nonspecialists alike.

Gregory Smits is professor of history and Asian Studies at Penn State University. He is the author of several books, including, most recently, Early Ryukyuan History: A New Model.

  • “This may be Donald Fixico’s best book in a long and distinguished career. He tells the dramatic story of Chitto Harjo and the Crazy Snake Rebellion to reveal a larger and longer struggle. Both personal and thoroughly researched, this revealing and quite original history traces how Native communalism and the Medicine Way resisted Christianity and American individualism within the Muscogee Nation.” (Richard White, Stanford University)
  • “Chitto Harjo (Crazy Snake) was a man caught in the grind between two worlds as the ancient one of the Muscogees met the overpowering one of Euro-American newcomers. Was he a troublemaker or patriot? Donald Fixico argues compellingly here for the latter, and by doing that he throws light on global colonization as a clash of spiritual and perceptual power as much as one of outward authority and command.” (Elliot West)

Flaptekst van het boek over Chitto harjo van Donald L. Fixico

How a Mvskoke traditionalist leader forged a movement to resist the division of tribal lands and keep his people on the everlasting Medicine Way.

Chitto Harjo (“Crazy Snake”) had several names—Wilson Jones, Bill Jones, Bill Harjo, Bill Snake—and people called him many things: troublemaker, rebellion leader, uncivilized Indian, martyr, murderer. Many called him crazy for fighting against progress and for his commitment to traditions that they believed were outdated and dying out. Yet in the eyes of many Mvskokes and traditionalists of other nations, he was a hero, a defender of the old ways, a Native patriot, and a leader of the Medicine Way.

These traditionalists believed in the Mvskoke worldview, which has inspired the Mvskokes and other Southeastern peoples to carry on their traditions as they have done for hundreds of years. In this engaging account, historian Donald L. Fixico tells the story of the Mvskoke people and their fight for survival and unity amid enduring tensions between white “civilization” and traditional culture. A personal story that begins with Fixico attending a Green Corn Ceremony with his father and young son, this engrossing narrative integrates traditional knowledge with historical method to present an Indigenous perspective on Mvskoke and Native American history.

Donald L. Fixico (Muscogee, Seminole, Shawnee, and enrolled Sac and Fox), originally from Oklahoma, is Regents and Distinguished Foundation Professor of History at Arizona State University. A former Newberry Fellow, UCLA Postdoctoral Fellow, and Ford Fellow, he is the author and editor of seventeen books.

Although Civil Rights leaders march through these pages, Weiss prefers the company of the unsung , the members of the irresistible army, the beauticians and bus drivers who risked their lives and their families’ well-being… Weiss is the author of two previous histories that elevated ordinary women doing extraordinary things [and] is highly attuned to the ingrained patriarchy of the era, including in much of the Civil Rights Movement, where women were the boots on the ground while men took leadership roles (and higher salaries).” (Phil Kloer, Atlanta Journal Constitution)

Flaptekst boek over de ondergrondse scholen van de burgerrechtenbeweging

In the summer of 1954, educator Septima Clark and small businessman Esau Jenkins travelled to rural Tennessee’s Highlander Folk School, an interracial training center for social change founded by Myles Horton, a white southerner with roots in the labor movement. There, the trio united behind a shared mission: preparing Black southerners to pass the daunting Jim Crow era voter registration literacy tests that were designed to disenfranchise them.

Together with beautician-turned-teacher Bernice Robinson, they launched the underground Citizenship Schools project, which began with a single makeshift classroom hidden in the back of a rural grocery store. By the time the Voting Rights Act was signed into law in 1965, the secretive undertaking had established more than nine hundred citizenship schools across the South, preparing tens of thousands of Black citizens to read and write, demand their rights—and vote. Simultaneously, it nurtured a generation of activists—many of them women—trained in community organizing, political citizenship, and tactics of resistance and struggle who became the grassroots foundation of the Civil Rights Movement. Dr. King called Septima Clark, “Mother of the Movement.”
